Introduction | The last letter I wrote to my mom is folded up neatly right beside her in her casket. She always told me that my letters filled with words of encouragement were one of the few things that made her fight so hard during her three-year battle with ovarian cancer. She passed away in our living room on December 2, 2007, just weeks before my 20th birthday... not exactly something my friends back at college could relate to. So these letters I'm writing now aren't exactly meant for my mom, but rather for you: the son or daughter who wants to know what to expect before and after losing a parent; the friend who doesn't know exactly how to comfort them; or the parent desperately curious of the ups and downs her children will face without her. I'm not a counselor or a therapist-- I'm just a grieving daughter hoping to show you that, unfortunately, you're not alone. |
