Introduction I am a professor of engineering at a large university in the US. My research focuses on complex adaptive systems - especially on the biological basis of cognition, and the quest to build truly cognitive artificial systems. I also work on the cognitive aspects of social networks and on models of innovation. Those whose work I have drawn the greatest inspiration from include Herbert Simon, Benoit Mandelbrot, Stuart Kauffman, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Walter Freeman and Douglas Hofstadter. I am an avid student of history and human society, often trying to see them from a complex systems perspective.
