Introduction I’m a LILM or Late-In-Life-Mom. Not late, as in, I waited till I had my AARP card to give birth. But like many of my peers, I spent my 20s and 30s focused on career, and my spare time figuring out which guy I wanted to marry. After a few false starts -- which included a wedding bailout 48 hours before the big stroll down the aisle and a starter marriage that ended in divorce -- I reconnected with a former college flame. Proof positive that even if you can’t go home again, it still pays to attend those college reunions. I told Stewart early on that I would never 1) leave Brooklyn 2) change my name and 3) have children. But, as they say, life happens when you make other plans. To wit: I left Brooklyn and ultimately settled in Orlando. After the wedding, in a show of commitment, I hyphenated my name. I even got pregnant . So here I am, at 42, a new arrival to the bright sun-dappled daylight of the Mommy ‘Hood, complete with a Kate Spade diaper bag and Volvo sedan with a baby seat in the back. I technically arrived (aka gave birth) at 39. But any time you join a new community, you need to get adjusted and learn your way around. As they say on Law & Order: These are my stories.
