Introduction | I am a (young) middle aged Deaf man who will soon undergo Cochlear Implant surgery. I grew up Hard of Hearing in a hearing world and was forbidden to use ASL. When I was 21 years of age I lost all of the meaningful hearing in my right ear “in a snap" while talking on the phone. At age 34 I woke up to find that overnight I lost all of the hearing in my left ear. In this blog I will describe my pre-surgery experience and emotions, my surgical experience, my post surgery experience, and my experience adjusting to the implants. If you read this blog before my surgery, please count down the days with me! In between by posts about my Cochlea Implant experience, I will throw in stories about my life and what it has been like to traverse through three worlds of Deafness (Hard of Hearing, Late Deafness, and Deaf). I will leave no stone unturned. This will be a 100% completely honest and in the face blog about what it is like in each of these worlds. The beautiful, the tragic and the ugly will not be omitted. I would ask that if you know who I am, that you please refrain from identifying me so that I can remain honest in all that I jot down. Welcome! |
