Introduction Stewart B. Leavitt was the founding Editor of Pain Treatment Topics (http://pain-topics.org) in 2005 and now serves as Executive Director of that and the associated program, Opioids911-Safety (http://opioids911.org). He was educated at the University of Illinois Medical School, Chicago, in biomedical communications and then served as a Commissioned Officer in the US Public Health Service. He earned Masters and Doctorate degrees specializing in health/medical education at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, where he was a Ford Fellow researching urban healthcare delivery systems.

Dr. Leavitt has more than 25 years of experience in health/medical education serving numerous government agencies and private organizations. He was founding editor of Addiction Treatment Forum in 1992, and directed that project for 15 years. He has authored more than 260 articles and peer-reviewed research reports appearing in various publications and websites, most of them focusing on pain management. He is a member of the American Academy of Pain Management, American Pain Society, the International Association for Pain & Chemical Dependency, and a participant in the U.S. Pain Care Forum.
