Introduction	I teach History at Kenilworth Junior High School.
Interests	In order to inspire students to actively learn and participate, Social Studies instruction must be relevant and evocative. This instruction should lead to the empowerment of students so that they may be able to change the world in which they live. The goal of social studies education is to create active thinkers and speakers. It is intended that the student participate fully in the society in which they live. This includes involvement in the political process as well as social activism on the community level. It should be conveyed to students that they are responsible for their society. All students should be active participants in creating a situation where all people may comfortably live and participate in the growth of the society. Social studies focuses on the manner in which our society lives and has lived. It analyzes the factors to which society changes and carefully reviews those consequences. In addition, Social Studies posits theories for change; change for the betterment of all peoples. Specific attention is given to inequalities that exist in American society. Also examined is the inherent discrimination of race and gender in public policy. The teaching of Social Studies must focus on solving problems within the structure of government and society using a multi-disciplinary lens composed of Economics, Sociology, History, and Political Science and other related subjects. It is through an amalgam of disciplines that students and teachers may arrive at a greater perspective of societal problems and their solutions. This instruction gives meaning and validation to social studies so that students will understand the importance/relevance of this particular discipline in light of Mathematics, Science and English. Social Studies instruction shall create students who recognize problems inherent in government and society and motivates them to actively change these problems.
