Introduction Portland native Claire Willett was the 2011 Oregon Literary Fellow for Drama, the summer 2011 writer-in-residence at the I-Park Artists Colony in Connecticut, and a member of the writers’ collective Playwrights West. A founding artist of Portland’s Fertile Ground Festival of New Work, Claire has seen five of her plays produced as staged readings in the festival: UPON WAKING (2009); HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN (2010); THAT WAS THE RIVER, THIS IS THE SEA, co-written with Gilberto Martin del Campo (2011); DEAR GALILEO (2012), which was produced by Artists Repertory Theatre, funded by a 2012 Career Opportunity Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission and will be produced in the Hothouse New Play Series at Pasadena Playhouse in March 2013; and THE WITCH OF THE IRON WOOD (2013), a postmodern chamber opera based on Norse mythology co-created with Los Angeles composer Evan Lewis. Current projects include FOR THE TIME BEING, an adaptation of a W.H. Auden poetic oratorio which retells the story of the birth of Jesus as set in World War II, and WHERE THERE IS DARKNESS, LIGHT, a Gatsby-era reimagining of the life of radical progressive Catholic icon Saint Clare of Assisi.
