Introduction ABOUT THE AUTHOR Francis Oliver Lynn was born in South Philadelphia and lived there for the first nineteen years of his life. The experience of growing up in a culturally and economically deprived community contributed significantly to the development of his commitment to the education and spiritual development of people of all ages. The Ghetto Flowers Series of books are based on the events of the first twenty years of his life. He was inspired by his students to write the stories he told of his life while teaching. Ghetto Flowers is the fruition of that inspiration. Francis received his degree in Liberal Arts from Indiana University, concentrating his studies on psychology and education. He received his elementary school teaching certificate from The College of New Jersey. Francis conducted several trips to Costa Rica, England and the eastern United States, introducing students in middle and high school to principles of ecology and cultural diversity. For the last thirteen years, Francis has taught language arts, math, science, and social studies at Princeton Friends School in Princeton, New Jersey.
