About Me
I’m Director of It Takes A Team! Education Campaign for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Issues in Sport, an initiative of the Women’s Sports Foundation. I’m also a Professor Emerita in the Social Justice Education Program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. This is a fancy way of saying that I took early retirement from the university. I spend my retirement directing It Takes A Team! to do what I can to make sure that younger generations of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender athletes and coaches can live openly, be recognized for their talents and respected for their character instead of vilified, misunderstood or feared for their sexual orientation or gender identity. I wrote a book entitled, Strong Women, Deep Closets: Lesbian and Homophobia in Sports, published by Human Kinetics, 1998. I am also co-editor of Teaching For Diversity and Social Justice: A Sourcebook for Teachers and Trainers, Routledge, the second edition of which will be available in the spring, 2007. I married the love of my life on July 10, 2004. I am blessed with good health, a wonderful home, a great circle of friends and a loving family.
