| Introduction | I was born in Denmark in 960 son of Harold Bluetooth and spent most of my life a buccaneer with lots of battles, and pillaging. I first raided England in 1000, but without a great deal of success so I resorted to blackmail England instead of ravaging it. But in 1003 the English lead by the dreadful Æthelred (the unready) massacred all the Danes living in their land at the the time. This included my sister. During each of the following eleven years, materially assisted by the universal and shameless disloyalty of the Saxon ealdormen, we systematically ravaged England. The wretched English paid us in ransoms alone some £158,000. In August1013 my boats anchored at Gainsborough an important inland port on the River Trent. On Deceber 25th 1013 I proclaimed myself King and Gainsborough capital of England. However on the 13th of February 1014 I died in Gainsborough . |
