About Me

I lecture on the history of crime. Since almost everything has been illegal at one time or another, this leaves me a lot of ground to cover. In 2006, John Wiley & Sons published my book,"The Science of Sherlock Holmes," non-fiction about 19th century forensic science. It won an Edgar award from the Mystery Writers of America, which made me very happy indeed. It has been optioned for television, and I am now working on the script. I am the organizer and moderator of the annual Forensic Forum at Stony Brook University's Museum of Long Island Natural Sciences. My work has also appeared in the NY Times, Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, and The Lancet. I have two grown daughters, two young grandsons, a perfectly wonderful husband/tech support who puts up with a woman who keeps autopsy reports on her night table. Our lives are managed by Dr. Watson, our large and determined Labrador Retriever. (The audio clip on this blog is an interview of me by Kelly Ryan and Cameron Phillips on CBC Radio One's "Freestyle" program.)
