Introduction I'm not what you would consider a green-living fanatic. I live in an old apartment building with steam radiators, and I drive a 20-year-old pickup truck that would get much better gas mileage with a tune-up and a new carburetor. On the other hand, I do walk to work every day. I would commute by bicycle if it were more than 500 yards. And if I had the "normal" commute of 12 or 16 miles (depending on whom you ask), I would be seriously looking for an affordable and reliable electric car. It just makes more sense to burn a few kWh of electricity (even if it's coal-generated) than it does to burn a few gallons of gasoline in an idling engine, dumping 20 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere at ground level for every gallon burned.
