About Me
I was born in Kingsland, Arkansas in 1932, and then raised in Dyess, Arkansas. By age five I was working in the cotton fields, singing along with my family as they worked. The family farm was flooded on at least one occasion, which later inspired me to write the song "Five Feet High And Rising." My older brother Jack died in a tragic accident involving mill machinery in 1944. My family's economic and personal struggles during the Depression (when I was growing up) shaped me as a person and inspired many of my songs, especially those about other people facing personal struggles. I am currently syndicated in 300 newspapers around the country.
