| Introduction | Danez Smith (Poet/Actor/Playwright) started in the Twin Cities’ Youth Poetry scene, but eventually found himself in Madison, WI attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison, studying education and being one of the founding members of the First Wave Hip-Hop Theatre Ensemble, the first Hip-Hop Scholarship and Performance group to be funded by a University. Danez went on to perform Mexico, Panama, Switzerland, England, and around the United States. Danez also established himself as a figure in the Madison Poetry scene, representing the city at the National Poetry Slam every year since his move. Writing and performing bone-shaking poetry isn’t all he’s doing. His One-Man Theatre Production “For Those Who Pray In Closets” is receiving critical acclaim and standing ovations wherever it is performed. Written and Performed by Danez, this work is pushing the limits on Mr. Smith as an artist, and pushing the limits of his audiences as to what they experience and how they perceive the world. Ever-changing and ever-progressive, Danez’s is pushing the boundaries of creativity and thinking, and are sure to change the worlds that we continues to travel and amaze. |
