| Introduction | I used to want a lot of things in life. I had this dream that I would be a really cool person, travel the world, save the rainforests, find an solution for world peace, and be really good at lots of things (photography, writing, science, music, holding my breath under water for long periods of time, etc.). In the back of my mind, I knew that I also wanted to get married and have kids someday. Eventually I realized that I could not do all of these things at once. Some of them--like holding my breath under water for long periods of time--I might never do. So, here I am, living in the suburbs with a family, a mortgage, and even a cat. Sometimes I stare at my passport and wonder when it will ever get another stamp. Sometimes when I'm cleaning the house I start to sing a verse of "Wheels on the Bus" to myself and I have to run to the mirror and make sure it's really me. Then I look at the perfect face of my beautiful daughter, and I know that if I could do it all over again, I'd choose the exact same path that led me here, to this unexpected life in suburbia. |
