Introduction Born in Nottingham to Jim (James Ernest) and Joan Shaw (née Tryphena Joan Pembleton*). She spent most of her career as machinist in Tory councillor Martin Brandon-Bravo's sweatshop on Hadyn Road, he spent most of his as tobacco worker at Player's. Went High Pavement Grammar School, then Leicester University to study French, taught in Albi, France, 2 years. Later taught in England, 8 years (latterly Deputy Principal) in college in Nottingham. Wrote column for Nottingham Evening Post 2 years, gained MA with Distinction in Literature, dissertation on Nottingham novelist James Prior’s Forest Folk (1901), a dehistoricized, working-class dialogue with fin-de-siècle, middle-class New Woman. Successfully researched 'The Work of Lionel Britton' full-time for PhD in Literature with Open University. Books published: Windmills of Nottinghamshire, Windmill Wood, and Hidden Nottinghamshire. Any comments are very welcome, and my email is clearly displayed. *She was Ellen Seymore (which she wrote as Seymour) Pembleton (1893-1982), née Alcock and born in Ireland, and my grandfather was Herbert.
