| Introduction | Born in Seattle, Washington, I grew up on the east side in Redmond, Kirkland and Bellevue. In 1976 I moved to San Francisco where I lived in an apartment on DuBois Avenue with little furniture and a job that barely paid my rent. Ah, my dream come true. At night I sat on the floor of my living room, looking out the bay window and watching a white neon cross rotate on top of a building somewhere over the rooftops. I was not in Oz. I was not in Kansas. I was living a truth written by George Bernard Shaw -- and I paraphrase: There are two great tragedies in life. One is to not get your heart's desire; the other is to get it. |
