Introduction I grew up in a household with two parents who hadn't loved the food they ate growing up - lots of canned watery vegetables, and "blue" (skim) milk - and so were particularly dedicated to making sure there was fresh, tasty, and nutritious food in their home. And living in San Francisco, they had a lot of options! Food has always been an important, family-gathering, at-home affair: I remember being surprised that other moms didn't cook dinner every night. Family favorites are varied and wide ranging...but usually include a lot of butter and cheese. I met Alessia in college and marveled over her recipe binder lovingly compiled by Mamaloutie, but I didn't really delve into it, or Michele's cookbooks, until I lived with Alessia for two years. Michele's recipes were definitely a standby for us, and some of those are all-time favorites of mine - now passed on to my own mother! I like to cook, but I mainly use recipes. My ultimate goal is to be the kind of cook who just goes on instinct - using a lot of butter and cheese, of course. It has to taste good!
