Riverkeeper

About Me

Founded originally as the Hudson River Fishermen’s Association, Riverkeeper has led the citizen-waged battle to wrest control of the Hudson from polluters and is credited for its role in restoring “America’s First River.” Having evolved from an organization with humble beginnings to one of the nation’s most respected waterway protectors, Riverkeeper is living testimony to what democracy in action can achieve.

Riverkeeper maintains a thirty-six foot wooden patrol and research vessel, the R. Ian Fletcher, operated by our Hudson Riverkeeper, Alex Matthiessen and Boat Captain, John Lipscomb. Riverkeeper’s full-time presence on the river enables us to respond to and investigate new reports of illegal discharges, facilitate scientific research on the Hudson, and provide access to the River to our members, public officials, students and the media.

The Riverkeeper Boat Log is dedicated to offering a visual glimpse into the world of the R Ian Fletcher and the various research projects and investigations Riverkeeper is actively involved in.
