| Introduction | I lived in France for a year right after college, teaching English at an elementary school in the middle of nowhere, Ardèche. I had studied French for ten years prior to that, but I was still thrown unceremoniously into a situation where I was the foreigner. “L’Américaine avec le sac-à-dos,” they called me: the American girl with the backpack. I was the only American in kilometers, and I walked everywhere with my trusty backpack. Like everyone who lives in a foreign place, I gained a unique experience into languages and cultures, the things that divide and unite people. My viewpoint is neither all-encompassing nor all-knowing, nor necessarily right. It’s just mine, written to help you. [end disclaimer] |
