Introduction I’ve spent a decade leading internal communications efforts for a variety of Fortune 500 companies. While confident in my skills as a writer and communications strategist, I grew dissatisfied with traditional, anecdotal ways of demonstrating the value of my work. Why was my output so fuzzy, particularly in light of the explosion of measurement tools in other business areas? Metrics were the missing piece of the puzzle. So I closed out of MS Word and fired up Excel in an effort to put some rigor around evaluating internal communications. In a reverse of “A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper,” the literature major studied Six Sigma in order to measure how people really get information – and what they get out of it. From there I’ve developed a pragmatic, down-to-earth approach to measuring the impact of communications and to using those metrics to improve communications effectiveness. I’ve held key communication roles for companies including STATS, Inc., Ameritech/SBC, GATX, R.R. Donnelley and A.T. Kearney.
