About Me

Just your typical Philosophy Ph.D. with nine kids. I teach at Auburn University and love it -- War Eagle! In the best of all possible worlds (whatever Leibniz might have to say on the matter), I would clean a room and come back to it an hour later without weeping in despair...eat chocolate without fearing the scale's retribution...speak French without having to stop and think, "Quel est ce mot?"...and write without ceasing.

• KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER (Sigrid Undset)...do I detect a Nordic theme here? Then I'll confess my Anglophilia: INTENTION (Elizabeth Anscombe)
• THE MILL ON THE FLOSS (George Eliot)
• SURPRISED BY JOY (among every other non-fiction and fiction work from the pen of C.S. Lewis)
• virtually all of Jane Austen (though not in sequence or my brain herds the characters together into one big Victorian ballroom). While we're still in the UK let me stand and wave from my place on the Harry Potter bandwagon: PRISONER OF AZKABAN is my favorite. And what can I say? I adore A.A. Milne! Then I've got my girls at home: THE YEAR OF PLEASURES (Elizabeth Berg)
• STANDING IN THE RAINBOW (and others by Fannie Flagg)
• LITTLE WOMEN (Louisa May Alcott - duh...I love her in spite of the fact that she was on the Wrong Side of That Unpleasantness)
• I don't go too much for chick-lit (might be my age) except for laughing so hysterically through THE NANNY DIARIES while on a 2003 flight to Boston that I thought the attendants were going to smother me with an oxygen mask. Speaking of laughs let's not forget the *Utterly*fabulous*in*every*way EVIL EDITOR'S NOVEL DEVIATIONS. And last but not least: THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH (Norman Juster)! What - did you really think I could limit a disclosure of my favorite books to a comma-separated list??
