About me

Location Minneapolis, Minnesota
Introduction I can't claim any great background in Shakespeare or Renaissance studies (though I have sung with the Elizabethan Singers at our local RenFest!). During and after high school and an intermittent undergraduate education, my interests turned to earlier and earlier languages and literatures: Chaucer, the Gawain poet, Beowulf and other Old English works, Greek (especially Homer and Sappho), Gothic, Old Norse and Sanskrit (especially Vedic and Epic). From this perspective, Shakespeare looks very late and modern both linguistically and in general outlook. My first job was at a private university in central Georgia called Mercer where I taught linguistics, history of the English language, as well as a lot of freshman comp and general lit courses. I also developed and taught courses in early Asian literature, on nature lit, and on monsters in literature (which regularly included The Tempest.) Shortly after receiving tenure, I started teaching as an adjunct and soon had steady gigs teaching Historical Linguistics at the University and various subjects in the English Department at Augsburg.
