About Me

I have written for the global online magazine openDemocracy (42 columns during 2002-5), for The New Humanist in England and Zion's Herald in the U.S. Plus various essays on WAMC, northeast public radio. Background includes an upbringing in an intense religious movement, a doctorate in the sociology of religion from Oxford University, two published novels, 20 years as a carpenter, 10 years as a freelance business writer. I am an active member and past president of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills. My wife, Debi Clifford, works for an environmental nonprofit. Our son, Rowan, is 17.
