Introduction I was born in 1927 in Heidelberg, emigrating to New York in 1939, where I graduated from Brooklyn Tech. After a year in the Navy, I attended Columbia College on the GI Bill of Rights, followed by a Columbia Ph.D. in philosophy. My teaching career took me first to San Francisco State and then to Vassar; I also chaired those two departments. I then turned to “real” academic administration: as dean of arts and sciences at Northwestern for 13 years and then, briefly, as provost of the University of Pittsburgh, where I also chaired the philosophy department. I’ve written on different topics in philosophy, including a book on Georg Simmel and one on Plato, as well as on subjects of general interest—from op ed pieces to an autobiography. My experience in academic administration led me to write articles on higher education issues, as well as three books, one of which, Undergraduate Education: Goals and Means, was given the Frederic W. Ness Book Award. My interests in music and art included choral singing, crowned by participation in performances of major works with the Pittsburgh Symphony. My efforts in wood sculpting have lead to several exhibits of my work.
