Introduction Mike McDowell discovered Pheasant Branch Conservancy as a birding hot-spot in the late 1980s and began documenting its avifauna in the mid-90s. He started leading field trips there in 2002, first for Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy, and then for Madison Audubon Society. His patch list for Pheasant Branch presently stands at 223 bird species. He has entered over 550 checklists for the conservancy since he began using eBird in early 2007. Mike is probably best known for his bird digiscoping photography, which he’s been doing for over a decade. His photographs have appeared in various newspapers, magazines, and calendars. He writes a birding and digiscoping blog at www.birddigiscoper.com. Mike is a birding optics specialist at Eagle Optics in Middleton and has been employed there for 12 years.
