Introduction HARDBARNED! ONE MAN’S QUEST FOR MEANINGFUL WORK IN THE AMERICAN SOUTH is the title of my forthcoming memoir, a darkly comic, brutally honest and introspective true story. In 2005, after earning a Master’s degree in English while teaching writing, publishing film studies essays and presenting at academic conferences, I could not find work as a professional writer and did not want to teach. I drove a truck for the next three years, delivering and repossessing portable storage barns across the rural American South. While constantly pleading with employers across a plethora of industries for a mere entry-level opportunity to prove myself as a writer, I plunged into the unknown—a daily, rural trucking adventure consisting of unpredictable encounters with several very nice folks, but also with quite a few unintelligible, insane and occasionally drunken rednecks, a scumbag salesman, a menacing highway patrol officer, malfunctioning equipment, fire, mud, blood, shit, dogs, danger and existential ennui, the likes of which I had never imagined. Born of and informed by the barn stories that now reside in my forthcoming book, this random-topic blog soldiers on, albeit irregularly.
