Introduction I was born in Iran in 1979 and at the age of 8 my parents made the difficult decision to flee their homeland due to religious persecution. My parents were in their late 30s with four kids (12, 8, 3 and my youngest sister was born in Pakistan) when they left everything in pursuit of religious freedom. We had spent about 15 months in Lahore, Pakistan when we finally were granted asylum to Finland. I lived there 10 years before moving to Sweden to go to college. After completing my master’s degree in English I got married and moved to Pittsburgh, PA where I have been living the past 5 years. In May of 2008 I finally got my US citizenship and voted for the first time in a historical presidential election. What a journey! From being a persecuted Baha'i, chanting anti–American slogans in the school yard while wearing my chador as a 7 year old to being an American citizen and living in a free country. I will never forget the start of this journey.
