Introduction My name is Farhana Shaikh and I have been cooking since I was 9. Many people would be shocked to hear this but I think it’s the best thing that could have happened to me. I learnt early on how to make many dishes that were recipes handed down to my mother from my Nani Maa (Grandma). Even though my mother was the cook in the family, my father will always be the true chef. I wish he would have cooked more but we were a very traditional family when it came to roles, and that’s all I will say about that. From my dad I learnt to be creative and to push the envelope, and from my mother I learnt to be consistent and stable. With these influences I have learnt to cook in a very unique manner. There are dishes that come from “forever recipes”, unchanged and unaltered ,since I feel it would almost be a sin to amend them, and then there are the recipes where I think, now why did my mother teach me to do that? So then with my slight variations I have perfected and improved upon longtime favorites. And like any good story the twist in this one is my recent knowledge that I am gluten intolerant but luckily Indian food is so adaptable it can be made GF.
