About Me

As a professional journalist, I began writing about the members of the Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiquities. Their many and varied birds were a source of delight, but not getting the attention they deserved. Their knowledge and devotion to preserving historic breeds inspired me. I accepted the position of publicity director for the Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiquities in 2000. When MBI Publishing's Voyageur Press invited me to write a book to share that knowledge with others, I put aside other work and dedicated my time to poultry. How to Raise Chickens was warmly received and Voyageur Press decided a second book, How to Raise Poultry, would also be welcome. It was published in March 2009 and includes ducks, geese, swans, turkeys, guineafowl, game birds and ratites as well as chickens. With the donation of a collection of antique poultry books to SPPA in 2008, I trasitioned to being SPPA Historian. I'm currently writing a series of short breed descriptions of historic breeds. A colleague and I are compiling information on the history and cooking of geese.
