| Introduction | I am a cultural sociologist whose research explores the crisis of purpose in museum institutions, concepts of cultural value, cultural property, and the symbolic meanings of dead bodies. My PhD examined the social construction of the contestation over human remains in museum collections. I am the Director of the Arts and Society programme at the Institute of Ideas and a Committee Member of the Battle of Ideas. I write on the arts and cultural policy for the press.
