If mud is dirt plus water, what is clay?

First off, mud is soil and water. Dirt is what you find under your nails. Clay is composed from a hydrous aluminium phyllosilicate minerals, that are typically less than 2 micrometres in diameter. Clays are distinguishable for its tendency toward high plasticity.
