Introduction Originally from Puerto Rico Gerry Diaz was raised in New York where he was exposed to the fine arts at an early age. Visiting museums and being influenced by a neighbor who was a comic book artist was what got Diaz started. During high school he studied for some time at the Cultural Institute of Puerto Rico school of plastic arts and later studied drafting at the Lyceum of Art and Technology. For the last 15 years Diaz has been self taught in pastels, acrylics, watercolours and oils, which is his favorite medium right now. He was a member of the Beaufort Art Association for some years and he won the People’s Choice Award at the 2000 Spring Competition which led him to be represented by two local Galleries. He currently does between two and four commissions a year and is represented in Beaufort by The Charles Street Gallery in Down Town Beaufort, SC. Diaz work exemplifies the balance between classic and contemporary realism. His love for the human form and facial features was brought to it’s awakening by observing works by Lord Frederick Leighton, Degas, Vermeer and Norman Rockwell.
