Introduction | I hail from the wee hamlet called Hall's Harbour, NS, on the Bay of Fundy, where I was first exposed to marine and terrestrial wilderness by my parents. I eventually 'migrated' to Montreal to study environmental science at McGill University. I graduated from McGill in 2002 with my BSc, but not before spending a semester in Panama through the joint Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute-McGill University Panama Field Study Semester. I later returned to Nova Scotia where I spent 5 years cutting my teeth in the ENGO sector working for groups including CPAWS Nova Scotia (cpawsns.org), and serving on the boards of Nature Nova Scotia (naturens.ca) and the Nova Scotia Environmental Network (nsen.ca). I was also a National Councillor for the Canadian Environmental Network during that time (cen-rce.org). In 2007, I moved with my wife Jenn to Ottawa to undertake an MSc in biology at the University of Ottawa. During that time I was supervised by Dr. Jeremy Kerr (macroecology.ca). I completed my research into human impacts on ecosystem productivity in December 2009. My wife and I currently live, work and play in Ottawa with our beautiful baby daughter and two spoiled cats. |
