| Introduction | Cabot and Co. are wine importers and distributors based in Westport, Co. Mayo. We import a range of award-winning wines from producers in France, Italy, New Zealand and Slovenia. Whilst Ireland is a fantastic country to import wine into as the market is very open, it’s difficult to get experience of actually working with vines. After extensive research (not really!) we ended up with half an acre of vines in Eastern Slovenia in the Ljutomer Ormoz region – home to some of the country’s best white wines. The people and culture are fascinating – and it’s also an exciting place to be making wine now as there are mature vineyards with a new generation of winemakers introducing new styles. We’ve realized how little we actually know! The objective is never to produce a commercial wine ourselves – we’re already fortunate to import some great wines from the region made by proper winemakers! We just want to watch, listen, learn and experiment! Of course, there’s the small matter of continuing to manage the business back in Ireland whilst in Slovenia – and manage the vines back in Slovenia whilst back in Ireland. But that’s all part of the fun. Maybe. Maybe not… |
