About Me

I teach graduate/undergrad courses in food science, food safety, biotechnology and microbiology at the University of Melbourne. My basic training is a first degree in biochemistry and chemistry, and graduate training to Ph.D. level in applied molecular genetics. My doctoral thesis topic was on production of an animal feed supplement using genetically manipulated bacteria. My recent publications (some noted below) have been on epidemics caused by bacterial pathogens, published in high-ranking journals. My current area of research is food risk analysis and management. The most important of these risks are microbes in food and microbial products that are toxic. Zaia A et al . Molecular tests can allow confirmation of invasive meningococcal disease when isolates yield atypical maltose, glucose or gamma-glutamyl peptidase test results. Pathology. 2005 Oct;37(5):378-9. Homan WL, Tribe D, et al Multilocus sequence typing scheme for Enterococcus faecium. J Clin Microbiol. 2002 Jun;40(6):1963-71. Willems RJ,et al . Variant esp gene as a marker of a distinct genetic lineage of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium spreading in hospitals. Lancet. 2001 Mar 17;357(9259):853-5.
