Since I work for a data recovery company, I get a lot of calls about data backup solutions. Unfortunately for the callers, they are talking to me a little late! Now I am going to take a pro-active view on data backup and tell all of you about a very cool product I have been trying out. Not only did we loose our home, all of it’s contents and my car but I was a Shopping Center manager of a large Strip Center in Biloxi which was wiped out by Katrina so I am also currently unemployed. We are presently in Brownwood, TX with my sister and her husband. We left Gulfport after the hurricane with one car, 2 pairs of shorts and 2 T shirts each and our three dogs. Thankfully, there are people like you who lend a hand when it is needed most. We have always been on the giving side. I never dreamed that we would be on this side. We are down but we are not out. Our son removed the drives from the computer cases. I am sending you the following:

(1) Samsung s/n SOOQJ1OW933360 120 gig (out of a Sony Vaio desktop)

The Samsung drive is the most important of the two as it contains my husbands work files and all of our family photos.

Windows Woes

You gotta love Microshaft. They release updates all the time that do nothing but foul up your system even more than it already was. On the 8th they released 12 patches. I installed them and within 15 minutes my system was shutting itself off!

I had to go with my tail between my legs to a data recovery tech and ask him to fix it. That sucked worse than having no access to my data! Anyway it turned out the XP built in firewall slammed my "Tiny Firewall Pro". Half my day was wasted fixing this crap. hat really blows is the fact that all I have to do is connect to the Internet and my machine is pounded with worms, viruses and malware.

What I have now is a D-Link router between my broadband modem and my machine. I have my own connection since I do all the websites and marketing here.

This seems to be working and now I can focus on getting a news server up and running. We are trying to blast articles into Google and get some placement into Google News.

What is data recovery?

Well there are 3 types of recovery:

Logical Data Recovery - This type of recovery involves using software to
recover deleted files, virus damage or damage to the operating system.

Non-Invasive Recovery - When the electronics on a drive fry for some reason
or another and the hard drive doesn't have to go into the clean room, its
non-invasive.

Invasive Data Recovery - If any of the interior parts fail, usually the
heads, the drive has to be opened. Hard drives have to be opened in a clean
room, if even the smallest speck of dust gets into the heads the platters
can be damaged.

When we get in a job wether it is a laptop drive or a multi-system RAID (Redundant
Array of Individual Disks) the first thing we try to do is clone the hard drive
sector by sector. If this works then it is a matter of using our software to
return the data back in a way the user can work with it again.

If the drive won't clone then it is diagnosed to see if the problem is physical
or electronic.

Restoring data from disks, tapes, CDs and digital photo memory cards that
have been damaged by accidents, natural disasters, power surges and malfunctioning
electronics. Laptop hard disks are especially vulnerable if users are constantly
on the move.

a variety of techniques. They may be able to move the drive to a working
computer, or they may have to open the drive and replace parts such as read/write
heads, arms and chips. Sometimes, the platters are removed and placed into
another drive.

Newer disk drives are tested at the time of manufacture, and parameters unique
to that drive are stored on the disk or in firmware. As the drive is used,
data about bad sectors is added. If the drive is badly damaged in the areas
that contain this drive information, replacing parts may not be enough to
recover the data. Such drives require in-depth analysis for recovery."

One of the most common questions asked is "what is the best hard drive". Please keep in mind that the content in this blog is the opinion of a data recovery sales technician and not the company I work for.

That aside let's take a look at what PC World says about the "best" hard drives:

The question I thought was "what is the best hard drive?", not the cheapest. Of all the hard drive recovery jobs that I sell, the most common drive is a Maxtor DiamondMax. The fact is they get hot, die quick and have a tendancy to drop sectors like Paris Hilton drops boyfriends.

I just purchased 250GB DiamondMax 9's for a RAID that I was creating to store my music on. Within 4 days 1 of the drives failed. I found it so hard to believe that Maxtor would make such a piece of crap that I replaced it and within another week yet again, a drive failed. One of my engineers looked at my server and said it had plenty of fans and space so that wasn't a problem. My power supply is more than adequate
