In both laptop and desktop computers heat can cause platters to swell which makes the heads unable to find the sectors on your hard disk. One of the telling signs of impending hard drive recovery is a clicking noise. If you have a clicking hard drive then the heads have failed or are in the process of failing. Once the hard drive recovery begins and the disk is repaired enough to transfer the data to stable media the data recovery process is next.

Physical Hard Drive Recovery

The physical part of hard drive recovery is done in a class 100 clean room. The internal parts are replaced or repaired in the case of electronics. That allows for the data to be transferred to stable media. In most cases data recovery software is used to recover files. When a hard drive fails normally the OS files are damaged which is why software has to be used to finish hard drive recovery.

Why Hard Drive Recovery Is So Important

We have talked about why hard drive recovery is expensive and how it is impossible for real data recovery companies to repair hard drives for $299 or $399. But the question now is why is hard drive recovery important? Computer companies like Dell have come a long way in protecting your data. The problem with their backup system is they are relying on 2 hard drives in the same machine, if there is a power outage or surge, it is probable that both hard disks will be effected.

Hard Drive Recovery

Hard drive recovery is a type of data recovery that involves repairing a disk and using software to restore your data. It is important for you to know that if you need hard drive recovery, that the company you choose has a clean room to open the hard drive in. To properly repair a hard drive it has to be done in a clean room. If your hard drive is clicking or isn't seen in the BIOS than it needs to be repaired. Do your research when looking at different companies that do hard drive recovery.

Hard Drive Recovery Disk Repair

Hard drive recovery is based on repairing the disk, usually the heads. Normal hard drive operation is quiet, if your hard drive is noisy it is due to fail. Clicking hard drives need hard drive recovery. The more storage capacity a hard drive has, the more likely hard drive recovery will be needed. Platters that have grooves will damage the heads needing repair to be performed.

Hard Drive Recovery Damaged Disks

Once a hard disk is damaged, it needs to be opened in a clean room. This is very important to prevent static discharge or further damage from dust or other foreign particles. Hard drive recovery is the part of data recovery that repairs the media enough to be transfered to stable storage. At that time data recovery software can re-build file systems and recovery data. There are many types of hard drive recovery scenarios and today we are going to talk about water damage. Believe it or not, we are still getting in hard drive from Hurricane Katrina victims. DTI's unique experience with water damaged hard drive recovery has put them back in the news as well.

The Roanoke Times is following a story about the search for a hard drive that is suspected to have been thrown into a pond. DTI's owner Dave Mohyla is quoted in the article. Due to our vast experience with water damaged hard drives, Dave is an obvious expert in that type of hard drive recovery.

Lead Management CRM Software

Not all CRM software packages are made equal. The best CRM options include advanced lead tracking and management features. CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management, and is a very big industry. If you would like an easy to understand overview, as well as a chance to see how important Customer Relations are in the US check out the White House's Page On CRM.

Lead Management is the most important part of running any type of online business these days. One of the best solutions available is AIMpromote CRM Software. AIMpromote is different from traditional CRM software and by far the best choice for increasing sales and improving business intelligence. Customer relationship management software is only as good as the support, features and reporting that is included in the base packages.

AIMpromote has a lower cost of implementation and total cost of ownership than their competitors. In fact set up fees are non-existent with AIMpromote. That's right, there are no setup fees, and they will even integrate your system with your website free of charge with no cost to you!

With most CRM packages there is a huge learning curve that your management and sales staff has to go through. With AIMpromote the ease of use of their lead management system will keep your sales staff working better in no time at all.

One of the best overall reasons to choose AIMpromote as your lead management and CRM solution is the total cost of ownership of AIMpromote is significantly lower than other lead management solutions.

Not sure what Total Cost of Ownership means? Well you're not alone, but I was able to find a clear understanding when talking to AIMpromotes's helpful sales staff.

TCO can be explained simply as the sum of all costs generated by owing the CRM software. This reflects the one-time purchases and investments made as well as recurring fees and expenses incurred. TCO is more than just the cost of implementation, but it also factors in recurring costs going forward. The reason I am explaining this is because the total cost of ownership of AIMpromote is significantly lower than other lead management solutions. Add up the TCO and all of the other features including the fact that you can try the software for 14 days with no cost or obligation, and AIMpromote comes across as a smart business decision!

If you are in the market for lead management than check out AIMpromotes's CRM software and watch the leads roll in!

Data Saving Solutions: The History Of Backup

Everyone by now has lost data at one time or another. The question is are you backing up? You would be amazed to know how many repeat customers we get. Sure we have very good support and a lot of big companies that have used us in the past are more inclined to send any damaged hard drive to us again. It is the small companies and regular people that I am referring to.

Data Recovery is expensive, that is a fact. Even though we have some of the best pricing around, it is still a lot of money to fork over when you have lost data. That is why it is essential to backup your data! Not only do you need to perform regular data backup, but you must also test what it is that you are backing up!

If you are looking for a backup solution, it is best to know all of your options. There is a site out there that should be your first destination. The History Of Backup is a must read if you are not sure of which way to go with protecting your data.

The site gives a clear overview of data backup solutions, how they originated, and what is best for today's computer users. They go over some interesting topics as well as explaining the different types of backups:

CD-R/RW and DVD - Backup Media

Flash Drives and Data Backup

Blu-ray Disks and HD-DVD - The New Generation of Backup Media

Network and On-line Backup Solutions

Local Area Networks

File Transfer Protocol

Network Attached Storage

Storage Area Network

These are just a few of the different backup solutions you can learn about at The History Of Backup. I highly recommend paying the site a visit!

Hard Drive Recovery Crashed Disk

Hard drive recovery is a term that is often misused. An essential part of data recovery, hard drive recovery is the pat of the process that has to do with the repair or recovery of a hard drive.

Hard Drive Recovery

When a hard drive crashes, it is either a physical problem, one of the many mechanical parts of the hard disk has broken, or it is a logical problem, the operating system or other software on the computer has caused the machine to act up. If you have lost data to a physical hard drive failure, the disk will need to be repaired so the data can be recovered.

Hard drive recovery is the process of not only repairing the disk, but transferring the data on to stable media so data recovery software can be used to rebuild and restore files. DTI data has a class 100 clean room where they perform hard drive recovery.

If your hard drive is making noises or is no longer recognized in the BIOS, give DTI a call and they can help. DTI Data are experts at hard drive recovery.

24 Hour Hard Drive Recovery & Server/RAID Recovery Hotline:
Toll Free 1-866-438-6932 or direct 1-727-345-9665.

Extended Software Support:
8 AM to 11 PM EST 7days a week!

Backup to DVD

Since I work for a data recovery company, I get a lot of calls about data backup solutions. Unfortunately for the callers, they are talking to me a little late! Now I am going to take a pro-active view on data backup and tell all of you about a very cool product I have been trying out. As always I have to throw in a disclaimer that DTI Data Recovery is not responsible for any of my opinions. I have tried a lot of backup solutions and Backup Platinum is one of the best. It is powerful and easy to use at the same time. I personally love the backup over FTP aspect of the program. It allows me to safely and securely store my critical files on multiple servers in different locations. Living in Florida has made me very paranoid, especially during hurricane season.

Backup To DVD Hard Drive USB Disks FTP

Backup Platinum makes a reserve copy of your critical data virtually to any type of storage media: hard or USB drives, CD-R/W or DVD±R/RW media, FTP server or Local Area Network.

The program uses a "Wizard" approach to define the backup set: what, where, how and when to backup. Built-in CD/DVD engine allows you to erase the rewritable disk before burning and automatically split large backups to several parts using disk spanning. The program is based on multi-threaded file-processing engine and creates detailed logs of all operations. It also can run in service mode under NT-based systems to execute scheduled tasks even when nobody is logged in. Backup to DVD might be the most common application of this fine program, but I also appreciate the other options and choices for the backup media.

128-bit encryption with Blowfish as well as multi choice compression options are available to keep your backups small and secure. The program works very well on Windows XP, 2003 Server and all the legacy Windows operating systems. I highly recommend it to anyone. Backup Platinum was created by SoftLogica LLC whose focus is on the development, marketing and support of file and network management tools and utilities. I found their support to be excellent as well as timely.

DART NTFS Data Recovery Software for XP

DTI Data Recovery released its finest data recovery software ever last year. The new DART for XP is specially designed for NTFS file sytems. When speaking with our chief software engineer Dick Correa, I asked him "why software for just one file system?" Dick replied, "Designing for both FAT and NTFS dilutes the power of the software. Focusing on one file system allows for a higher degree of ease of use, and a higher percentage rate of recover, being an old fart I know of a saying ' being a jack of all trades, yet a master of none' applies to data recovery as well".

Another factor is that 85% of visitors to dtidata.com are using Windows XP. The cool thing is, since we are Microsoft Certified, we have had Vista for quite a while and DART is just as effective and fast on that Operating system.

Here are the facts:

DART Data Recovery Software Features

Professional Data Recovery software with easy to use features.
Fast - no other file recovery software this powerful is this fast, scans your drive in minutes, not hours.

Powerful search functions allows you to quickly find the data you are looking to recover, no endless picking through nameless folders. DART
Lost files retain their file names. DART shows you your files as they were named, not with random numbers.

Download a fully functional version of:
DART XP NTFS Data Recovery Software

File Undelete Software

News Flash!

DART Undelete - DTI Data Recovery has released the ultimate undelete software! Google has 5,540,000 web pages that somehow are related to or have the keyword "hard drive recovery" in the text of the site. The fact is unless you physically go to the lab you will never know if the data recovery company has a clean room, or even a clean bench to open hard disk drives safely (in a dust and static free environment).

Most people feel better about sending their hard drive and more importantly their private or business data to a company outside their area. Unfortunately there are only a handful of actual data recovery companies in the United States that operate up to recognized industry standards.

While it is true our clean room facilities are located in South Pasadena if you need hard drive recovery in Florida unless you are up for a long drive you still need to ship your drive. After surviving 4 hurricanes last year we are uniquely experienced in the types of problems facing survivors of Katrina.

Our initial contact came through Jerry Seregni the Eyewitness Morning News Technology
Analyst for WWLTV in New Orleans. Read the interview here. Since the posting of the article DTI has been able to help many people reconstruct their data. Even though it will take a while to rebuild the affected ares of Katrina, DTI can rebuild data now!

Kathy Higgins writes:

Re: Data Recovery of (2) hard drives with flood damage from Katrina

Dear Dave

Words cannot express the gratitude that my husband, Jack, and I feel over your generous offer to recover the data from our hard drives free of charge which were under 8 feet of water in our home/office in Gulfport, MS. from hurricane Katrina. As I pointed out, I saw an article about your Company written by Jerry Seregni. I will certainly write him and tell him our story. Not only did we loose our home, all of it’s contents and my car but I was a Shopping Center manager of a large Strip Center in Biloxi which was wiped out by Katrina so I am also currently unemployed. We are presently in Brownwood, TX with my sister and her husband. We left Gulfport after the hurricane with one car, 2 pairs of shorts and 2 T shirts each and our three dogs. Thankfully, there are people like you who lend a hand when it is needed most. We have always been on the giving side. I never dreamed that we would be on this side. We are down but we are not out. Thanks for the hand up.

Our son removed the drives from the computer cases. I am sending you the following:
(1) IEC s/n 2Y3A00 H1PB0BZU HPD 30 gig (out of an EVO N600C laptop)

(1) Samsung s/n SOOQJ1OW933360 120 gig (out of a Sony Vaio desktop)

The Samsung drive is the most important of the two as it contains my husbands work files and all of our family photos.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us. Our son has brought us his Compact EVO laptop for us to use temporarily. Somehow I will repay you.

With sincerest gratitude and God bless.

Take care,

Kathy Higgins

DTI is commited to do our part.

Windows Woes

You gotta love Microshaft. They release updates all the time that do nothing but foul up your system even more than it already was. On the 8th they released 12 patches. I installed them and within 15 minutes my system was shutting itself off!

I had to go with my tail between my legs to a data recovery tech and ask him to fix it. That sucked worse than having no access to my data! Anyway it turned out the XP built in firewall slammed my "Tiny Firewall Pro". Half my day was wasted fixing this crap. hat really blows is the fact that all I have to do is connect to the Internet and my machine is pounded with worms, viruses and malware.

What I have now is a D-Link router between my broadband modem and my machine. I have my own connection since I do all the websites and marketing here.

This seems to be working and now I can focus on getting a news server up and running. We are trying to blast articles into Google and get some placement into Google News.

Hard Drive Recovery Secrets

What is data recovery?

Well there are 3 types of recovery:

Logical Data Recovery - This type of recovery involves using software to
recover deleted files, virus damage or damage to the operating system.

Non-Invasive Recovery - When the electronics on a drive fry for some reason
or another and the hard drive doesn't have to go into the clean room, its
non-invasive.

Invasive Data Recovery - If any of the interior parts fail, usually the
heads, the drive has to be opened. Hard drives have to be opened in a clean
room, if even the smallest speck of dust gets into the heads the platters
can be damaged.

When we get in a job wether it is a laptop drive or a multi-system RAID (Redundant
Array of Individual Disks) the first thing we try to do is clone the hard drive
sector by sector. If this works then it is a matter of using our software to
return the data back in a way the user can work with it again.

If the drive won't clone then it is diagnosed to see if the problem is physical
or electronic.

Here is answers.com's definition:

"data recovery

Restoring data from disks, tapes, CDs and digital photo memory cards that
have been damaged by accidents, natural disasters, power surges and malfunctioning
electronics. Laptop hard disks are especially vulnerable if users are constantly
on the move.

Several Techniques

Organizations that specialize in retrieving data from damaged computers use
a variety of techniques. They may be able to move the drive to a working
computer, or they may have to open the drive and replace parts such as read/write
heads, arms and chips. Sometimes, the platters are removed and placed into
another drive.

It's Getting More Difficult

Newer disk drives are tested at the time of manufacture, and parameters unique
to that drive are stored on the disk or in firmware. As the drive is used,
data about bad sectors is added. If the drive is badly damaged in the areas
that contain this drive information, replacing parts may not be enough to
recover the data. Such drives require in-depth analysis for recovery."

What are the best hard drives?

One of the most common questions asked is "what is the best hard drive". Please keep in mind that the content in this blog is the opinion of a data recovery sales technician and not the company I work for.

That aside let's take a look at what PC World says about the "best" hard drives:

"Looking for a hard drive with extraordinary capacity and a fair price? Our Best Buy award for hard drives over 50GB goes to the 120GB Maxtor DiamondMax D540X, which has the second lowest price per gigabyte on the chart. (The lowest is held by the 160GB version of the same model.) A close second is the 100GB Western Digital Special Edition Caviar, which boasts outstanding speed scores and has an 8MB memory buffer, four times the size of the buffers of the other drives on the chart."
Here is the full article.

The question I thought was "what is the best hard drive?", not the cheapest. Of all the hard drive recovery jobs that I sell, the most common drive is a Maxtor DiamondMax. The fact is they get hot, die quick and have a tendancy to drop sectors like Paris Hilton drops boyfriends.

I just purchased 250GB DiamondMax 9's for a RAID that I was creating to store my music on. Within 4 days 1 of the drives failed. I found it so hard to believe that Maxtor would make such a piece of crap that I replaced it and within another week yet again, a drive failed. One of my engineers looked at my server and said it had plenty of fans and space so that wasn't a problem. My power supply is more than adequate
