Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11 in honor of those who have served in the armed forces of the United States. The observation was originally designated in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson as Armistice Day:

To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nation.

Wilson selected November 11 because the Armistice ending World War I had been signed on this date in 1918. Wilson wanted to make sure that Americans did not forget the tragedies of the war. In 1938, Congress passed legislation which designated Armistice Day as a federal holiday. The name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 so that all veterans would be honored.

On Veterans Day, special services take place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery.

I am a baby boomer. I was born in peace time and enjoyed an uneventful childhood and adolescence. Then there was war. Many young men and women of my generation joined the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines … then they flew or sailed out of my life … forever. Yet, some returned, weary and battle scarred to a country that did not appreciate their sacrifice.

Today, November 11, 2009, we should remember them. To all veterans of all conflicts, whether alive and well, disabled, lying in Arlington National Cemetery or the Fields of Flanders or inscribed in the Wall in Washington :

. . . online conversation analysis of two subsets of Millenials finds that they are concerned about the current economic environment, and are becoming particularly value-conscious and focused on finding employers that offer stability and long term growth opportunities.

Despite the title (probing?), this post is full of information on the teens (14-18) and early careerists (22-29). However, I do wonder what the subset name is for 19-21 year olds? I could suggest a few, but I am prejudiced by having two Gen Ys in the house.

The rise of the semantic web and social networks has changed the face of marketing. Instead of marketing TO consumers, we now want to market WITH the consumer. Think of it as taking ENGAGEMENT to the next level. Basically, marketers will need to define their market and learn what matters to them, and not what marketing gurus say they want. To complicate the issue, Generation Y is further divided into teens (ages 14-18) and early careerists (ages 22-29).

Participatory Marketing Network (PMN) is a partnership formed by Michael Della Penna and Ragy Thomas with Pace University’s Lubin School of Business' Interactive and Direct Marketing (IDM) Lab. This network is one of the first Gen Y ongoing research panels.

I am not a big fan of traffic exchanges, but I like the look of Traffic Smarter. This method may work well without being intrusive. Check it out.

Traffic Smarter is a new site that says it guarantees more CONVERTING web visitors and online advertising with very little effort or cost. So I decided to put it to the test...

My first impression was the site looks professional and clean, with an attractive look and feel. It is easy to read and understand. Joining the site was easy and painless--they do offer 2 upgrade options but they are not required to gain the benefits.

The Members Area is very well laid out and intuitive--I could figure out what to do after only a few minutes and was able to get up and running in less than 5 minutes. Inside the site, you create links and ads--the links you simply enter any URL links you use into the generator and it transforms them into "Traffic Smarter" links. You create ads for anything you want to promote using the Traffic Smarter Ad Generator, which is very easy to use. You can create as many links and as many ads as you like. And they are organized in a logical way--links are displayed in the order you create them but also your 5 most recent links appear on the main page for quick reference. Also, since the link generator is the tool you'll use most, it is also right at the top of the main page when you login. Very smart!

After you've created at least 1 link and 1 ad you can start to generate traffic. Every time the Traffic Smarter link is clicked, the page loads followed by a cool slide-up ad window at the bottom. It displays an ad PLUS an image with your affiliate link that goes back to Traffic Smarter. So if anyone clicks the Traffic Smarter image they see the site, and if they signup they become your referral. It's a great viral feature because you can build referrals without even trying to just by using the site.

Johnny Makkar of Attention Digital blog has developed a spreadsheet of 211 branded apps for the iPhone. For each app, he has compiled user ratings, number of ratings and category. You may view the Google spreadsheet here.

Some findings from Attention Digital:

The biggest category is Lifestyle, News is second. Free dominates branded apps with 90 percent of market. Top five most rated apps: Facebook, Zippo, Barclaycard, Weather Channel and Google.

With help from others, Johnny Makkar hopes to expand the spreadsheet to include Android, Blackberry and Palm OS.

If you use these apps, help him out--because there is NOT an App for that!

During 2nd Quarter 2009, the number of people watching mobile video increased 70% from last year and people who watch video online increased their viewing by 46% compared to a year ago.

As of the end of June, there are 15 million people in the USA that subscribe to mobile video. These people spend an average of 3 hours and 15 minutes each month watching video on a mobile phone. Using the mobile phone for watching video is more often a past time of 12-17 year olds (19 percent), 25-34 year olds (32 percent) and 35-44 years old (20 percent).

My Computer Tells All !

I am Ariella, an HP Media Center laptop. My owner, CyberCelt, is a good computer owner. She keeps the crumbs in the keyboard cleared out and she has not spilled anything on me for months.

She actually is an excellent owner. The Sleep-By-Number bed is not exactly a clean room, but she has strengths. She always keeps the ad aware, malware, virus protection and firewall updated. She makes sure all the system checks and maintenance are done.

Just recently, I have seen CyberCelt checking out the newer computers online. CyberCelt wants to go with one of those little laptops. I predict she will burn out the tiny computer within a month.

Believe me, I know all the "computing" CyberCelt can do. This woman has blogs, websites and more email accounts than I can count. She is active in those social networks and always has a cause or two she is working.

While browsing together yesterday, CyberCelt and I went to the HP Store. I know now EXACTLY what I want. Why Is Taps Played?

At the end of all military funerals, the song TAPS is played. Did you ever stop to wonder why?
The story of TAPS began in 1862, during the Civil War. Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe came upon a gravely wounded young man on the battlefield. Unable to determine if the young solider was a Rebel or a Yankee, he decided to get the young soldier some medical attention.

Crawling on his stomach through enemy gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward the Union encampment. When the Captain finally reached safety, he discovered the young man was actually a Confederate soldier, and he had died.

The Captain lit a lantern and turned to see about the young man's next of kin and papers. As he turned back to the young man, he truly saw the face of the soldier. It was his son. Evidently, the boy had joined up with the Confederacy when the war started.

The grief-stricken father asked his superior officers to give his son a full military burial, despite his enemy status. His request was deined. The Captain then asked if he could have the Army band members play for his son's funeral. This request was also turned down. After all, the soldier was a Confederate soldier.

Reason prevailed; probably out of respect for the father. Finally, the army said the son could have one musician playing at his funeral. So, Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe chose

Need a Little Facebook Time?

Nucleus Research conducted research on the use of FaceBook on company time.

Oh Lord, they should have known better than to go looking. What they found was that almost 50 percent of the study participants and 77 percent of participants with a Facebook account use it during work hours. Some workers use Facebook as much as 2 hours a day at work.

Let me think about this: 8 hour work day - 2 hours of Facebook time = 6 hour workday

Well, I wonder where they will get the free time for personal cell calls, texting, messaging on the computer and using that old standby, email. LOL

Tentative Schedule

8-815 am - arrive to work, get coffee, chit chat, turn the phones and computers on
816-830 am - drink coffee and talk with friends in adjoining cubicles
830-900 am - discussion of where to eat lunch, plans for baby shower and a birthday this week.
9-915 am - Coffee Break
916-930 am - visiting on the way back to cubicle
930-1000 am - furious burst of energy used returning phone calls, emails, making of to-do lists
10 am - boss comes in, everyone looks busy (this is probably when the majority of Facebook activity takes place.)
11 am - start putting things away in preparation for lunch
1130 am - depart for lunch after arranging cars
1131 am-1235 pm - Lunch
1236-1 pm - bathroom breaks, talks of lunch, fullness, diets and exercise
1-2 pm - flurry of energy to get a few things ready for the outgoing mail and the outbox on your bosses desk
2-215 on - Coffee Break
216 -3 pm - Facebook time
3-359 pm - last burst of energy to close things up tidy cubicle, check mail room, and say goodbye to the work day.

There are just not enough hours in the day!

Bingahoo? Yabing? Bingahooy?

I did not write a post on this before because MSN and Yahoo have negotiated the deal to death in the past. However, it looks like Bing may become the search engine for Yahoo. Then, perhaps Bing/Yahoo (Bingahoo? Yabing? Bingahooy?) will be a real competitor to Google.

Yahoo's request for an upfront payment (it is said to have asked for several hundred million), in addition to revenue guarantees that would amount to billions over the course of the deal, caused a breakdown last week in the on-again-off-again talks.

Other issues to be worked out are:

Microsoft wants to develop technology and not sell media.
Microsoft wants to eliminate Yahoo as a search engine competitor.
Yahoo wants more revenue from searches that originate on Yahoo and lead to a purchase.
Yahoo wants access to data for use in behavioral targeting.
Yahoo wants a share of revenue from the sale of search ads.
Will Yahoo give Bing the "powered by" brand?
Would advertisers buy ads via Yahoo's Panama or Microsoft's AdCenter platform?

I hope they can reach an agreement soon. Yahoo! is stagnating as a search engine and losing marketshare to Bing. If negotiations bog down again, the winner will be Google.

Today I was searching for a particular photograph, which I did not find. However, I DID discover many photography sites that have FREE images. In most cases you must attribute the photograph to the site or photographer.
