Ideas for Solutions to the Financial Crisis

We need lots of good ideas to solve this crisis. We can't rush against an arbitrary deadline. I have no financial background... Here are some ideas.

Make it illegal for the highest paid employee to make more than 40x what the lowest paid employee makes. This includes all bonuses and benefits.

Pass a law that all ARM loans are reset to their initial rate, so that people with loans can continue to pay what they can afford.

Create an educational program which drops the current curriculum for high school students in their Junior and Senior year and replace it with a vocational program. They will each manager a handful of failed loans in their area. They will work out a fair deal with the loan recipients, monitor their payments, and ensure that they are trying to repay their loan in good faith. They will get deep training in finance, customer service, and recent US history.

We should all chip in and create a distributed loan bailout company to compete with the US government, to ensure that G.W. and pals don't line their pockets with our future. This corporation would focus on keeping people in their homes and stabilizing banks. It would only bid on health loans. We could call it Washington Mutual or like Internet Mutual, since WaMu is taken.

These are some possibly very bad ideas, but we need more ideas and to not rush to let the federal government solve this problem for us. We should work this one out ourselves. We've seen how well we can rely on the federal government and I don't want G.W. as my landlord.

I've got to back Barack! I just stood outside in the cold for 2 and 1/2 hours to hear a really inspiring rally. There were around 2 thousand people outside during his speech, so the broadcast it over load speakers and we could see Obama on little TVs inside the Key Arena.

Yes, the Key Arena was filled to capacity and there were people ringing the outside of it North East South and West!

Finally a politician that has a vision and a backbone. Barack talked about Gitmo, Health Care for All, Habeas Corpus, High-Tech, and Education. Obama talked about things that don't exist, about ideas, about overcoming fear and actualizing a vision into a reality.

He talked about our global crisis including climate change and AIDS epidemics. He talked about labor unions, disenfranchised native Americans, and creating restrictions on CEOs so they can't make more in 10 minutes than their employees make in a year.

It rained on all of us outside, but it was a sheet of refreshing hope in our Bush/Cheney desert minds. My hands are frozen, but my mind is ablaze with positive propaganda.

I believe in my gut if we could just join together, across racial divisions, across gender divisions, young, old, rich, poor, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight ... then there is no problem we could not solve

How, during a total fiasco like the Gonzales congressional hearings, do we let the "Protect America Act" get passed?

How many years will it take to get our rights back? Or enough that reasonable paranoia levels fall into the background noise?

Fear, greed, and corruption are dissolving our "union" at a rapid pace. Most of us will be fine, but make no mistake, ever day we move closer to fending for ourselves; eventually it will be a coincidence that we are living in the physical boundaries of "The United States of America".

Pay your taxes and keep your head down. Let Halliburton make their Q3 goals.

Even the most rabid flag wavers will have dropped all nationalistic pride and will have become "The Yankee Tribe" or the "World of Warcraft Tribe" over the "Proud American" crowd.

Domestic ex-pats are less affected, we've already learned the lessons of 9/11, Iraq, and Katrina.

Stoneway Bike Lane Protest Ride

The protest ride yesterday was a lot of fun. A lot of bikers showed up and everybody was friendly. It is a shame that the city caved in to developer's whims, but it's not to late to make a better Fremont happen. Check out SeattleLikesBikes for the details.

I have a few more photos from yesterday, shot with my new telephoto lens. It was hard to get a good perspective on the ride, because everybody was split up among cars in little pockets. It anarchy had broken out, it would have been easier to get a good photo.

At critical moments in our history, Americans have been called upon to protect our Constitutional guarantees of liberty and justice. We face such a moment today. The American Freedom Campaign is a non-partisan citizen's alliance formed to reverse the abuse of executive power and restore our system of checks and balances with these ten goals:

Fully restore the right to challenge the legality of one's detention, or habeas corpus, and the right of detained suspects to be charged and brought to trial.

Prohibit torture and all cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.

Prohibit the use of secret evidence.

Prohibit the detention of anyone, including U.S. citizens, as an "enemy combatant" outside the battlefield, and on the President's say-so alone.

Prohibit the government from secretly breaking and entering our homes, tapping our phones or email, or seizing our computers without a court order, on the President's say-so alone.

Prohibit the President from "disappearing" anyone and holding them in secret detention.

Prohibit the executive from claiming "state secrets" to deny justice to victims of government misdeeds, and from claiming "executive privilege" to obstruct Congressional oversight and an open government.

Prohibit the abuse of signing statements, where the President seeks to disregard duly enacted provision of bills.

Use the federal courts, or courts-martial, to charge and prosecute terrorism suspects, and close Guantanamo down.

Reaffirm that the Espionage Act does not prohibit journalists from reporting on classified national security matters without fear of prosecution.

It's sad that we have to fight for such basic rights. The United States of America has rarely practiced democracy, but we have never shunned it's principals as completely as we do now.

We need a web based NGO to force transparency, provide direct action tasks to be completed, and provide streaming polls / voting. This would allow us all to collectively govern the unwieldy beast called U.S.A. We should all be forging the agenda, not News Corps editorial staff.

But why is hipster ridicule directed at the cultural output of a generation ago? Why is irony focused upon the recent past? Contrary to some facetious fears that the retro gap is closing, and that soon we will be celebrating for its ironic value the cultural output of this very day, in fact it seems that the ironic focus is eternally fixed upon the detritus that was floating about right around the time of one’s own origins, the things that could help to explain how one came to be at all, including the invitation to a moustache ride that just might have led to one’s own conception.

Sunday we checked out the Sustainable Ballard Festival. It was fantastic! Patty and I hung out with Joe from Pioneer Square Bike Repair. Joe is super nice and the owner of PBR. He gave us a free 1 on 1 bike tuning lesson. We also hit the Ballard in motion, Groundswell NW Project, and other fun stuff. There was even a booth representing Greenwood / Phinney Ridge getting behind the carbon challange.
