Roller Derby Movie needs extras in Saline MI

Be an Extra in the roller derby movie "Whip It"

"Filmmakers are looking for "thousands" of extras to help with the filming of "Whip It," being produced by Drew Barrymore. Barrymore's production company, Flower Films, set up shop in Saline last week. They're scheduled to start filming July 28, the movie company said.

"Whip It," Barrymore's directorial debut, stars actress Ellen Page in the story of a teenage girl who discovers the world of roller derby.Kathy Remski, a partner with Real Style in Birmingham, said her company is looking for "thousands" of local people to fill in various roles. Real Style received a contract from Flower Films to seek out extras."

"We are looking for individuals from 18 to 50, all walks of life, from the most eccentric to punk rockers to roller derby fans to rock 'n' roll people"

"We want expressive individuals. If somebody has pink hair, bring it on."

In the third installment of its Changing Cities exhibit exchange, Detroit's Museum of New Art (MONA) is proud to host selected artists from Galerie Eva Bracke in Berlin, Germany. Changing Cities is a project initiated by Jef Bourgeau, director of MONA, in order to swap artists from the Detroit region with their counterparts in other cities around the world. “The outside world isn't aware of the exciting work being created in Detroit's art community,” says Bourgeau. “This project will export this art to those who are always looking for something fresh and new.”
Previous exchanges brought a show curated by Chicago art consultant Paul Klein to MONA in April, 2007. That exhibit was followed in February 2008 with a show of Detroiter’s works at ThreeWalls Gallery in Chicago.
The exchange continues with the arrival in Detroit of an exhibit by the Berlin group chosen from Galerie Eva Bracke and titled Moving Walls: with Olivia Berckemeyer, Christoph Dettmeier, Andrew Gilbert, Franziska Hufnagel, Florin Kompatscher, Alexej Koschkarow, Joe Neave, Max Schulze and Astrid Sourkova.
Works include drawings, paintings, video and photographs.
In conjunction with the Berlin show, MONA will also mount an exhibit in her other galleries featuring Metro Detroit artists whose work will travel to Galerie Eva Bracke in November 2008. These two exhibitions will afford an opportunity to see the works of the German artists alongside those of their American counterparts.

Participating Detroit area artists include: Dietmar Krumrey, Rachel Hunt, Cyrus Karimipour, Alison Wong, Hartmut Austen, Stig Eklund, Mary Fortuna, Marla Karimipour, Dick Goody, Kelly Frank, Jacque Liu, Vagner Whitehead and Kyohei Abe.

Works will include drawings, paintings, video and mixed media works on paper, photographs and small sculptures.

Join us in welcoming this group of German artists to the area at an All-American opening reception and summer cookout on Saturday, July 5 from 6pm – 9pm.

So the guys over at Suburban Sprawl sent us the newest release from the Javelins a few days ago called Heavy Meadows....you can check them out here and of course if you are one of the local music scenesters then you know about this one coming out later in the month

the band is out supporting the new record on a short midwester tour and until we get some young sap in here to do record reviews we are sticking to our guns and NOT REVIEWING IT....

why not? you ask?
1st off - we are too busy for that
also because we would say really rotten things that no one would like to hear about everything....and isnt there enough of that going around detroit?
(has nothing to do with Javelins CD)

What I will say is that although Javelins is not really my preferred type of music - I have not tossed the CD into the trash. I gauge a record by how I react to it in the car and currently the strong tracks are 2-6-10...I am a re-player - it pisses most people off but if I like a song I continue to listen to it over and over and right now those 3 tracks are getting the repeat hard core....in particular track 2 and 10 mostly but lets offer this CD up to the 1st reader who can wait a week or so before I eject it for a freebie

that might piss of SSprawl ...lets see if we get more goodies in the mail.

You can check out Javelins when they finish the mini-tour and headline a CD Release show at The Belmont in mid July - in the meantime

Fill the Frame” is a completely new kind of competition that has captured the enthusiasm of the artistic community. The Gallery has provided identicalframes to each artist (over 100 artists have entered) to fill as they desire with their creations. Visitors will be intrigued to see our walls adorned with works confined to identical 14X 21” parameters, yet beautifully individualized with a vast array of media, subjects and styles.

The Juror for this exhibition is Nora Venturelli, Instructor of Drawing and Painting as Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan and EasternMichigan University since 1997.
Our neighbors at the Woodward Avenue Brewers (WAB) and Emory Restaurants will graciously provide refreshments and discount dining coupons to reception attendees, for a complete evening of art and food.

Attachments are a digital photograph, “Dreaming of You”, by Mariko Brenner of Farmington Hills, a portrait in Conte Pencil ,“Contemplation”, by Barb Eko Murphy of Northville, and a dry point print with watercolor, “Waiting for Spring”, by Judy St. John, all presented in identical 14”x 20” frames.
