With the MAX-ER, boom length can be increased to 120 m (394 ft). With the addition of a luffing jib, there is an even more dramatic increase. Typically, the 16000 can handle a 54 m (177 ft) boom with a 84 m (275 ft) jib, for a total reach of 138 m (452 ft). But with the MAX-ER, the crane can support a 90 m (295 ft) boom and a 84 m (275 ft) luffing jib, a total of 174 m (570 ft) of reach.

Kadow says this extra reach is particularly useful in jobs where the crane cannot get very close to the area it is needed.

“Many times in petrochemical facilities, for instance, there isn’t enough open area to set up the crane immediately adjacent to the lift site. So the contractors need the extra ‘up and over’ allowed by the MAX-ER.”

For the first time on a Manitowoc crane, this MAX-ER is equipped with a hydraulically driven stinger. According to Kadow, this allows the operator in the cab to hydraulically adjust the position of the MAX-ER behind the crane. The mechanical stinger required manual adjustment.

;

;

RSS

Expert Witnesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07900398154407647098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361409.post-1165203777432509212006-12-03T19:42:00.000-08:002006-12-03T19:42:57.446-08:00New Ditch Witch 420sx ReleasedPERRY, Oklahoma — The Charles Machine Works, Inc., manufacturer of Ditch Witch underground construction equipment, announces the release of a new vibratory plow, the Ditch Witch 420sx. This new unit borrows from one of the company’s most popular compact vibratory plows, the walk-along 410sx, but adds riding capability, greater horsepower (40 hp), and several features that other articulating vibratory plows in its class do not have, including a dual-speed attachment drive, an operator’s console that moves with the operator, and a fold-down ROPS (roll-over protective structure) that enables the unit to maneuver under tree limbs, eaves, and other low-hanging obstacles. (Nasdaq: ANSS), a global innovator of simulation software and technologies designed to optimize product development processes, announced today the release of Fluent Connection 1.1 software that helps streamline the process of creating simulation models based on design data from leading computer-aided design (CAD) packages. Integrating core CAE technologies with the most popular independent design tools has been a key part of the ANSYS strategy for nearly a decade; this latest release brings direct integration to the Fluent products as well.
The Fluent UGS NX(TM) Connection, Fluent Pro/ENGINEER(R) Wildfire(R) Connection and Fluent SolidWorks(R) Connection products operate within the CAD system user environments and provide tools for checking and conditioning the 3-D geometry model in order to ensure that it has been properly prepared for the next step in the simulation process. Using Fluent Connection, CAD users can eliminate or repair geometry issues that would otherwise impede the simulation process. By providing a well-defined way to check the CAD model for possible simulation-related issues, Fluent Connection helps engineering organizations ensure a streamlined hand-off between CAD and simulation.
Typically, 3-D geometry models are created in CAD systems without full consideration for the requirements of automated and accurate simulation. Geometry models may include gaps between surfaces or overlaps and interferences that will make it more difficult to generate a high-quality simulation model. Using Fluent Connection, these issues can easily be identified and repaired. In addition, Fluent Connection takes into account the unique requirement of fluid flow simulations to include a description of the fluid volume inside or surrounding the 3-D solid model. By helping the CAD user to identify and isolate this fluid region, Fluent Connection eliminates the need for the engineering analyst to perform this task outside of the CAD system, thus saving time and effort during the simulation process.
In addition to enhanced functionality for conditioning of the geometry, Fluent Connection provides the ability to launch Fluent's FloWizard 2.1 or GAMBIT 2.3 simulation environment directly from the CAD system. The CAD model will be automatically loaded into the Fluent environment using native readers that eliminate the need for translation of the geometry data.
The Fluent Connection software products have been built using development tools provided under the PTC Partner Advantage(TM) Program (Parametric Technologies Corporation -- PTC(R) -- develops Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire) and UGS and SolidWorks partnership programs. "We are very appreciative of the support from our CAD/PLM partners under their software developer partnership programs," notes Ferit Boysan, vice president at ANSYS, Inc. "As a leading, independent provider of computer-aided engineering software, ANSYS understands that our customer base needs outstanding connectivity to multiple design tools and PLM systems. The Fluent Connection products are part of our strategy to help customers achieve a streamlined process that facilitates simulation-based design."
For downloadable, high-resolution images, visit www.ansys.com/newsimages.

ANSYS, Inc.
, founded in 1970, develops and globally markets engineering simulation software and technologies widely used by engineers and designers across a broad spectrum of industries. Educational programs and working equipment demonstrations will also give visitors the chance to increase their industry knowledge and see the machines in action, added Mr Beeler.
“The show is more than exhibits. It’s all about knowledge-sharing and access to global industry best practices, to help companies better utilize the safety, efficiency and productivity advances of equipment and products on display. This is the real value of ConExpo Asia,” said Mr Beeler.
The show is produced by the US Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), which conducted the inaugural ConExpo Asia in May 2006 in Beijing, China. AEM is once again partnering with the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME) to produce ConExpo Asia.

Six new Link-Belt cranes

Next month Link-Belt will introduce six new cranes at its CraneFest ’06 event at the company’s Kentucky, US, factory on 10 and 11 October.
With the exception of the new TCC 450 telescopic crawler crane, the company has kept tightly under wraps the types and capacities of the new cranes. A new attachment will also be launched.
Details of the cranes will appear on www.khl.com and the November issue of International Cranes and Specialized Transport magazine will contain a full review of the event.

Developments at Kato

Kato Works exhibited three new cranes at the recent Conet exhibition in Japan. Largest of the three was the 65 tonne capacity SL-650R truck crane. A notable feature is the three section telescopic hydraulic jib that raises the maximum hook height to 58.6 m from the 44.5 m for the main boom only.
Also on display was the MR-350SL, pictured, from Kato’s city crane range. Like the SL-650R, this 35 tonne capacity unit has a three-stage fly jib that increases hook height from 33.4 to a maximum of 47.3 m. Also on display was the 13 tonne MR-130 city crane.
All three cranes are designed for the Japanese market and, Kiyohiko Akagi, manager of Kato’s overseas marketing department, said, “We are ready to export if there is demand but truck cranes like the SL-650R are only really popular in the US and Japan.” This partly explains why the company has pulled back from the European market in recent years. Akagi explained, “We have sold a lot of cranes in Europe over the years, but we are not active at the moment because of the CE-mark requirement.” Akagi continued, “I think this will change in a year or two.”
Whether Kato comes back to Europe remains to be seen. In the meantime, the company is seeing an improvement in its domestic sales. “Business is getting a lot better in Japan. It’s slowly improving from the low point three years ago,” Akagi said.
Like other manufacturers, Kato is finding it difficult to source some key components to help it keep up with demand for new cranes. “It is difficult to get materials, especially tyres and high strength steel,” Akagi explained.

Grove launches 35 ton RT

Grove is launching its RT535E, a new 35 ton capacity rough-terrain crane that will be built at the company’s manufacturing facility in Shady Grove, PA. The new model features a four-section 102 foot full-power boom, and offers a a 26 to 45 foot offsettable swingaway extension giving the RT535E a maximum possible tip height of 154 feet.
The company says that the crane’s rectangular boom is made of high-strength steel, which offers weight savings and improved lifting capacity. The new machine features a new cab design with a streamlined dashboard control panel. The RT535E also features a Work Area Definition System, allowing the operator to pre-set safe working areas.
Maximum line pull from the main hoist is 11,640 lb, while maximum line speed is 445 feet per minute. The RT535E uses 0.6 inch wire rope and can accommodate 450 feet of rope on both the main and auxiliary hoists. The crane is powered by a Cummins QSB 5.9 liter six-cylinder diesel engine which offers 155 hp at 2,500 rpm. The crane can travel at a maximum speed of 25 mph.
Doyle Bryant, director of product development and marketing for Grove, said the new crane fits well into the company’s product range between its existing 30 and 40 ton cranes. Bryant expects interest in the new unit to be worldwide.

Finning sells UK forklift division

Finning (UK) Ltd has sold its material handling division to US company Sammons Enterprises for ?85 million. The division was one of the largest industrial forklift rental companies in the UK with a fleet of over 25000 units and approximately 1000 employees.
Finning (UK) said the sale would free up capital and management resources for its main UK businesses, the Caterpillar dealership and Hewden, the equipment rental company.
Nick Lloyd, Finning Group UK managing director, said; "The sale of Materials Handling will allow us to focus on growing those areas where we are committed to market leadership, most particularly the sales and servicing of other Caterpillar products and the rental solutions business [Hewden]."
Finning UK is owned by Finning in Canada, which is the world's largest Caterpillar dealer.
The new US owner of the fork lift truck business - which includes both sale and rental of forklifts - is Sammons Enterprises of Dallas, Texas. Sammons also owns Briggs Equipment, which is one of the largest material handling equipment distributors in the US and a dealer for Yale fork lifts.
Dave Bratton, president of Briggs Equipment in the US, and who will be a director of the new UK business, Briggs Equipment UK, said; "This acquisition has excellent potential for the employees and customers as well as equipment distribution division of Sammons. We see a number of similarities between Briggs Equipment UK and the Briggs Equipment operations in the US and Mexico. I anticipate that we will learn from each other, using the best practices of both companies to set the standard in material handling.”

Sunbelt-NationsRent aerials push

Sunbelt Rentals could open at least 14 new specialist aerial platform rental locations in the US following Ashtead Group’s acquisition of NationsRent. Sunbelt, which is owned by Ashtead, is now being integrated with NationsRent, which will create a US fleet of around 30000 aerial platforms, the second largest in the world.
Sunbelt has at least one specialist AWP location at each of its store clusters – groups of 10 to 15 branches in major metropolitan areas – and the addition of NationsRent will add a further 14 clusters to the business. NationsRent only operated general rental stores.
George Burnett, Ashtead’s chief executive, interviewed in the September issue of Access International, said the specialist store concept will be retained and extended into the new NationsRent locations, which will be rebranded as Sunbelt Rentals. “There will be the opportunity for more specialist AWP businesses”, he said, “The question is should we take some of that [NationsRent] equipment and put it into new specialist locations, or should we have specialist depots on top of the current level of [AWP] business.”
With the acquisition completed, Ashtead has embarked on the integration of Sunbelt and NationsRent. This, said Mr Burnett, would be made easier by the “extraordinary fit” between the two that will see just 25 store closures, and the fact both use Wynne Systems rental software.
Mr Burnett said Ashtead was keeping “an open mind” on NationsRent’s strategy of selling new equipment, including JLG lifts. “We will genuinely look at it, but we need to make sure that the right people are doing the right things. It’s difficult to have a sales force with ambiguous goals.”
The full interview with Mr Burnett, which also touches on Ashtead’s plans for A-Plant in the UK, appears in the September issue of Access International
www.khl.com

Expert Witnesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07900398154407647098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361409.post-1158290992131931432006-09-14T20:29:00.000-07:002006-09-14T20:37:59.180-07:00Bridge Section Is Pushed, Pulled and Lifted into PlaceIn an operation that altered the landscape of Providence, R.I. overnight, a contractor late last month wheeled a 5.5-million-lb bridge section onto specially equipped barges, then placed it onto 30-ft-tall piers as part of an $85-million contract.
The section is a 450-ft long, 160-ft wide, 85-ft high cable-stayed arched steel span. It is part of a 1,235-ft-long bridge, including steel box girders and precast concrete spans, that will carry a relocated section of Interstate 195 across the Providence River. Cardi Corp., Warwick, R.I., started work in winter 2003 on the key component of a $550-million program to replace the existing I-95 and I-195 inter-
change. Cardi opted to build the section off site. “When we put the contract out, we knew there was a possibility that someone might want to build it off site, so we had provisions in the contract to have land secured,” says James Caroselli, Rhode Island Dept. of Transportation chief civil engineer of construction operations.
The bridge was constructed at a former Seabees station in Quonset, R.I. “We built the bridge on temporary supports. The bridge sat on the bearings as we built it,” says Steve Cardi, executive vice president. During the construction process, meetings were held every month for two years to plan the move, he says.
Dutch subcontractor Mammoet brought in transporters—steel platforms mounted on multiple sets of wheels using independent hydraulic suspensions to maintain level—to move the section onto two 300 x 90-ft barges. “The two barges were linked like a catamaran with two crane booms and a pin connection,” says Cardi. Pumps moved ballast water in the barge to counteract the bridge’s weight. Then, the barges were towed to the jobsite where the bridge section was lifted and placed onto piers.
“We first installed [six] jacking towers up to a height of 30 feet,” says Cardi. Strand jacks on the towers lifted the section. Transporters, with attached cribbing and support structures, finished placement. The bridge was jacked up in 20-in. increments. Winches were used to slowly move the bridge into its proper alignment before crews lowered the bridge into place, using a low tide and ballast water to adjust placement.
The Aug. 28 installation went off perfectly, says Caroselli.
While the move itself went smoothly, the project encountered other challenges. Cardi’s contract rose to $93 million after it was forced to excavate submerged sheeting from an old hurricane barrier adjacent to the jobsite and from rising materials costs.

Arched bridge segment was erected on land and moved to barges for transport to jobsite, where it was jacked into place.
www.construction.com

Expert Witnesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07900398154407647098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361409.post-1158290952166924742006-09-14T20:28:00.000-07:002006-09-14T20:29:12.286-07:00Clean Air: EPA Seeks Refinery, Factory Rule Change. The Environmental Protection Agency wants to revise "new source review" requirements to make it easier for refineries and large manufacturers to modify plants without triggering Clean Air Act provisions for pollution control equipment and permits.
EPA's proposal, announced Sept. 8, contains three NSR changes that the agency believes would boost industry investment in energy-efficient and lower-emission technologies. One change would let plant owners or operators modify one part of a plant to increase production in other areas that were not updated. Under this "de-bottlenecking" provision, the unaltered parts of the plant could avoid NSR requirements if its emissions already were covered in an existing permit.
Another provision would allow EPA to view multiple, related projects at one facility as a single project when weighing NSR requirements. The agency also is proposing to simplify "netting," or how it calculates whether NSR applies to a project when emission level increases and decreases are added together.
EPA will take comments on the plan for 60 days after it is published in the Federal Register later this month.
Oil refiners, petrochemical companies and other manufacturers praised the proposed rule. National Association of Manufacturers President John Engler called it "an important step toward cutting the red tape in the regulatory process and ensuring that regulations are understandable."
To meet higher demand and requests by Congress and other policy makers, U.S. oil refiners plan to boost their capacity by 8%, or 1.4 million barrels per day, according to the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association. "The new EPA proposals will help the industry respond to these official calls for increased refining capacity," says NPRA President Bob Slaughter.
But environmental groups see EPA's proposal as giving industry another opportunity to postpone installing pollution control equipment. "The EPA is once again ignoring science and the impacts on public health in favor of increasing industry profits," contends Alice McKeown, a Sierra Club air issues specialist.
www.construction.com

Expert Witnesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07900398154407647098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361409.post-1158290914311561132006-09-14T20:27:00.000-07:002006-09-14T20:28:34.433-07:0025 Trapped in China Tunnel CollapseBEIJING - Firefighters and construction workers rushed Tuesday to dig out 25 road workers trapped after a tunnel collapsed in southwest China, local officials and media said.
The collapse occurred early Monday on a highway linking the cities of Guangnan and Yanshan in Yunnan province, said Lu Ying, a spokeswoman with the Guangnan Work Safety Bureau.
Lu said 26 people had been in the tunnel when it collapsed but one managed to escape. Fresh air, as well as food and drink were being piped into the remaining 25 trapped workers in the 165-foot-long tunnel, she said.
Rescuers at the scene were having trouble communicating by their mobile phones, she said, so she did not know if anyone had been pulled out Tuesday.
The official Xinhua News Agency reported late Monday that rescuers said the trapped workers were "all alive and they should survive."
Yunnan's local Life Express newspaper said on its Web site that one of the construction company's drivers, Li Zhiyong, said he noticed a fissure inside the tunnel that had been grown wider every day.
Xinhua said the cause of the collapse was under investigation.
Copyright 2006 The Associated Press. This year's conference tracks include:

Common Ground Alliance / One-Call Issues

The Common Ground Alliance and One-Call Issues track has the latest information on damage reports and the status of state laws. In addition, you can hear about the new 811 system for giving excavation notices and a favorite annual session on how the "one-call" process really works.

Engineering, Design & Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE)

Looking for the latest technical information and case studies on hot topics such as Ground Penetrating Radar and Subsurface Utility Engineering? You will find it in this set of sessions!

Excavation Issues

Today's excavator faces many challenges while simply digging a hole: from OSHA requirements to working with underground utility operators and occasionally dealing with damage claims. This track of sessions will give you some great tools for your business-survival toolbox.

Legal & Regulatory

This track will present the latest in federal and state regulatory initiatives plus practical information on the legal process that you will want to know prior to having to deal with damage claims. Numerous case studies and even a "sample" trial will keep these top-ranked sessions updated and interesting!

Locating & Marking

This track includes several new sessions on new topics this year. Hear about school curriculums for teaching damage prevention, new concepts in locating equipment, and some of the dangers locators face.

Mapping Solutions & Asset Management

A computer can handle huge amounts of information from many sources to give a lot of "Who, What, When" information. When you combine that with GPS technology's ability to tell you "Where," you have the answer to many underground challenges. This track contains several case studies with photos of products and technology currently in use.

Trenchless New Installations

As the urban underground becomes more and more crowded with utilities, the importance of accurately installing new utilities that avoid unexpected encounters with existing utilities becomes increasingly important. Not only must existing utilities be avoided, but sufficient clearance must be provided to avoid excessive settlements or heave that could damage the utilities. The new installations track focuses on prevention issues and applications of trenchless construction methods for pipelines and cables in urban congested areas.

Trenchless Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation of existing pipelines offers an alternative and often less costly solution for renewing underground infrastructure without digging and replacing pipelines. Rehabilitation methods such as pipe bursting, cured-in-place rehabilitation, and slip lining allow the service lives of existing pipelines to be greatly extended with minimal disruption to the surface and existing infrastructure. Clearly, when a pipe can be renewed in the same location and alignment as the existing pipeline, the potential risks to adjacent utilities can be greatly reduced. Strikes can be almost eliminated, and potential settlement/heave damage can be substantially reduced with good design and construction practices. The rehabilitation track focuses on good rehabilitation practices.
www.damageprevention.com

Expert Witnesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07900398154407647098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361409.post-1158290809178803492006-09-14T20:26:00.000-07:002006-09-14T20:26:49.303-07:00The Construction Distribution Industry
Sunbelt rentals acquires NationsRents

Sunbelt Rentals, a subsidiary of Ashtead Group, PLC, has announced that it is acquiring NationsRents, formng the third largest equipment rental company in the United States. Judging from the amount of feedback we have received, this hits a button with many of you!

One expert shared a very on-point experience that illustrates some of the points we have addressed and was kind enough to let me share it with the rest of our readers.

"Rosalie -- I though I would share a recent experience I had regarding the "non-refundable retainer" clause that I have added to my standard fee agreement this last year. I should start by noting that I have been on the fence as far as a decision to make my retainer non-refundable for the last few years. After having the topic covered in a discussion of forensic experts last year, and hearing several pros and cons on the issue from my colleagues, I did decide to put the clause up-front in my
fee agreement.

The reason I decided to make my retainer non-refundable is specifically so that I cannot be declared an expert witness, and my name cannot be used strictly for leverage in the negotiations for settlement of a case, only to have the attorney ask for a refund of the retainer once the case has settled.

Just a few weeks ago, I was retained as an expert in a case for a plaintiff who lived very near a plaintiff I was retained for last year regarding the same incident, against the same defendant. I was referred to this client by my previous client because I had prepared extensive computer modeling of the incident and, with the assistance of my testimony, that client did win the case and a substantial jury award.

The trial date for the second case was to be only two weeks after my first contact with that second client. They did retain me and sent me a retainer check and a signed Fee Agreement within a few days. A week after being retained and a week before the trial was to begin, however, the client emailed me and notified me that the case had settled and that he wanted his retainer back.

Sensing that something smelled afoul, I made a few calls, both to the County Superior Court Clerk and the offices of the opposing attorney in that case. I found out that not only was I declared as an expert witness by Notice served to the opposing attorney several days before my Fee Agreement was signed, but also that the case was "very close to settlement," though not yet settled.

I immediately sent my new client a letter congratulating him for "settling the case" and reminded him that my retainer was non-refundable, as was explicitly stated in the fee agreement that he signed.

Out of kindness and feeling somewhat (but not real) bad, I did go on to offer him a discount against any future retention of my services on any future case. I haven't heard back from him yet, but doubt if I will.

I think I am going to keep my retainer non-refundable."

-- Regards, John Q. Expert

Quote

"A lawyer's performance in the courtroom is responsible for about 25
percent of the outcome; the remaining 75 percent depends on the facts."
-- Melvin Belli

Training Center

How to Become a Dangerous Expert Witness

A dangerous expert witness is an expert witness who puts fear into opposing counsel. Opposing lawyers are concerned about the dangerous expert's expertise, his command of the facts, and his ability to communicate, teach and persuade the jury. Dangerous experts understand how to defeat opposing counsel's tactics and are capable of turning the tables on opposing counsel.

Dangerous experts are the most sought after of all experts witnesses. The mere disclosure of a dangerous expert to the opposing side can frequently increase the settlement value of a case. Accordingly, dangerous experts are selective regarding the types of cases they accept and they command premium fees. This book is designed to teach experienced experts how to become dangerous experts. You will learn:

- How to bulletproof yourself and your opinions
- What dangerous experts do when preparing to testify
- How to defeat opposing counsel's tactics
- How to answer trick and difficult questions

Features include:

- Hundreds of concise examples with explanations
- Executive summaries for quick "need to know" reviews

To order your copy for $99.95 see http://tinyurl.com/fzpbj or call, fax or email using the contact information found at the end of this newsletter for additional info or assistance.

Expert Excerpt

Take Notes Thoughtfully

The notes an expert witness takes are generally discoverable. This includes underlining of documents. Dangerous experts recognize that they are likely to be questioned closely on any and all notes and notations they make. They are careful not to create any notes that are inflammatory, show bias, or could be misconstrued and used against them.

Some experts routinely discard notes as part of their document retention policy. This is problematic for two reasons. First, this could be considered illegal if the notes are expected to be subpoenaed. This could result in the expert being barred from testifying or otherwise sanctioned by the court. Either result will not help the witness's career as an expert. Second, discarding notes can often be far more
damaging to the expert that whatever was in the notes. As history has shown from Watergate to Enron to Martha Stewart, the cover up is usually much more damaging than the underlying behavior. Dangerous experts are completely transparent in all they do and are not afraid to answer any questions about their notes.

EXAMPLE - Notes on records

Q: Your handwritten notes on the incident report say what, sir?
A: "Not helpful. Discuss with counsel."
Q: Let's talk about what you mean by "not helpful" and what exactly you
discussed with counsel.

Lesson: Dangerous experts recognize that any notes they make may result in questioning by opposing counsel. It will be difficult for the expert in the above example to "explain away" what he meant, especially if it conflicts with the opinions expressed in his report.

-----------------------------

EXAMPLE - Destruction of records/notes
Q: You made field notes when you examined the distress at the Windsor
House?
A: Yes, I did.
Q: These were made contemporaneously during your visit?
A: Yes.
Q: Where are these field notes?
A: I shredded them.
Q: Do you shred all your field notes or do you only do that in cases
where you are going to testify?

Lesson: The expert in the above example is in the unenviable position of discussing how, when, and why he shredded his field notes. If counsel can prove or even imply he did so to avoid conflicts with his reports or opinions, the expert's credibility could be damaged. The jury may not understand geotechnical engineering concepts, but jurors do understand destruction of records.

-- Excerpted from *How to Become a Dangerous Expert Witness: Advanced Techniques and Strategies* by Steven Babitsky, Esq. and James J.Mangraviti, Jr., Esq. http://tinyurl.com/fzpbj

Legal Levity

Improper Question or Objection?

A lawyer cross-examined the adversary's main witness. "You claim to have stopped by Mrs. Edwards' house just after breakfast. Will you tell the jury what she said?"

"Objection, your honor," shouted the other lawyer.

There then followed a long argument between the lawyers as to whether the question was proper. Finally, after 45 minutes, the judge allowed it.

"So," the first lawyer continued, "Please answer the question: What did Mrs. Edwards say when you went to her house after breakfast on December 3rd?"

"Nothing," said the witness. Do you ask for referrals from all available sources - clients, past clients, colleagues, vendors, friends, etc.?

An expert I know in Houston who has retired from his lifetime career is now a part-time expert consultant trying to spend time traveling with his wife. The Waterloo, Iowa, factory simultaneously celebrated its 30th anniversary and produced its one-millionth engine.
This significant achievement for the Waterloo factory is just a fraction of the overall total production of John Deere engines worldwide, which exceeds well over 5 million. To accommodate the rising global demand for the engines, John Deere now manufactures engines at five factories: Waterloo, Iowa; Saran, France; Torreon, Mexico; Rosario, Argentina; and Pune, India.
The one-millionth engine manufactured at the Engine Works in Waterloo was a Tier 2/Stage II PowerTech 8.1L engine, and it was installed in a John Deere 9996 cotton picker. Dave Rodger, plant manager of John Deere Des Moines Works, presented a gold key to Chester Shot, who purchased the cotton picker with the landmark engine inside. Shot will take the cotton picker back to Greenville, MS, where he farms 5,200 acres of cotton and 1,000 acres of soybeans.
"We are proud to announce that Engine Works employees produced the one millionth engine. This milestone is the result of the efforts of all our employees – from product design through manufacturing to sales and customer support," says Jean Gilles, senior vice president, John Deere Power Systems. "This engine reflects the innovation, commitment, quality and integrity of our employees as did the first engine that came off the Engine Works assembly line 30 years ago."
John Deere engines are the heart of John Deere vehicles. An increasing number of OEMs are specifying John Deere engines for their equipment, and many John Deere engines now power OEM machines. John Deere got its start in the engine business marketing to OEMs in the mid-1970s and sold a few hundred engines primarily to ag-related customers. Today, the JDPS global customer base includes John Deere engines in thousands of applications in a wide variety of off-highway markets.

www.oemoffhighway.com

Expert Witnesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07900398154407647098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361409.post-1152893790390555692006-07-14T09:15:00.000-07:002006-07-14T09:16:52.880-07:00MSHA official praises Michelin Tire Safety ProgramA senior Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) field inspector is singing the praises of the Michelin Earthmover Safety Training Program. The Michelin program was recently expanded to provide more comprehensive tire training for all of its earthmover market segments.
James owman, a 32-year MSHA veteran, is responsible for carrying out the mission of MSHA – inspecting mines and quarries to insure their safe day-to-day operation. Bowman recently said, "I am very impressed with the Michelin tire safety program and have used it several times since I received the material. The program is comprehensive, to the point and full of information that assures safe procedures and intelligent risk analysis determinations."
Bowman said that the mining industry is moving in a direction that will require more tire products than ever before. He noted that tires used in the mining industry today have potential safety consequences if not used properly and well-maintained.
"The Michelin safety program provides the total package of assembly, evaluation, maintenance and application," said Bowman. "It is obvious that the Michelin safety program is the most innovative and comprehensive program on the market today for tire safety. Many thanks and appreciation go to Michelin for its efforts to see that miners go home to their families safely every day," Bowman concluded.
The program is designed to educate managers, maintenance personnel, equipment operators and support staff on best safety practices not only in mine operations, but also in quarries, construction sites and port and terminal operations. The program can be taught by Michelin Earthmover personnel, authorized Michelin tire dealers or the customer's safety manager.
Michelin Earthmover is an industry leader with radial tires for equipment ranging from forklifts, to loaders, to giant haul trucks.

www.michelinearthmover.com

Expert Witnesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07900398154407647098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361409.post-1152893205684039962006-07-14T09:05:00.000-07:002006-07-14T09:06:45.920-07:00Grove GMK7450 sold to Qatar NavigationShipping operator Qatar Navigation has purchased a seven-axle GMK7450 (GMK7550 in the US) Grove all-terrain crane. The GMK7450 is the largest Grove mobile crane model produced and was sold by Mannai Trading, MCG’s sole distributor in the Gulf nation.
Since delivery, the GMK7450 has been placing 30 t (33 USt) concrete-covered gas pipes, for which it uses 55 m (180 ft) of main boom, and maximum counterweight of 120 t (132 USt). The Grove GMK7450 is the first of its kind to be purchased in Qatar.
The purchase was celebrated at a ceremony, held in Mannai’s offices in Doha, Qatar’s capital city. Representatives from Mannai, Qatar Navigation, and MCG were present. Sheikh Hamad bin Suhaim al-Thani, chairman of Qatar Navigation, said all three companies present continue to play an important role in Qatar’s future.
“The construction industry in Qatar is growing, and we appreciate Mannai’s service and the quality of Manitowoc Crane Group equipment supplied to us,” al-Thani said. “I’m sure that the GMK7450 will be an excellent performer, and I am delighted to add another Grove all-terrain to our existing fleet as we continue to strengthen our operations.”
Hamid Summers, Middle East sales manager for Grove, said MCG was further strengthening its position in the Middle East.
“One of our objectives in the Middle East is to better serve our customers with a local point of contact, and MCG is in the process of establishing a new facility,” he said. “A total staff of 32 will be on call, ready to back up our distributors, so that MCG can provide the best service possible. The GMK7450 is a flagship crane, one that MCG is very proud of. We are very fortunate to have customers and dealers like Qatar Navigation and Mannai who are responsive to engineering innovation.”
Khalid Mannai, chairman of Mannai Corporation, is confident the new all-terrain will prove successful in the region.
“Reliability, durability, and productivity are the three key values that come with every Grove crane,” Mannai said. “These values make Grove the global market leader it is today. We would like to thank MCG for the technical and commercial support it continues to provide. The GMK7450 is destined to play a leading role in many new developments in Qatar.”
The 450 t (550 USt) GMK7450 joins 12 other Grove all-terrains in Qatar Navigation’s fleet, which comprises five GMK5200 (GMK5240 in the US) models, three GMK5100s (GMK5120B in the US), two GMK4075s (GMK4090 in the US), and two GMK3050-1s, with another one on order, as well as a GMK5130-1, expected later this year.

www.manitowoccranegroup.com

Expert Witnesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07900398154407647098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361409.post-1152892487199918362006-07-14T08:51:00.000-07:002006-07-14T08:54:48.036-07:00Gehl Announces the New 7810E Skid Loader – The World’s Most Powerful Skid Loader.Gehl Company announced a new model Gehl 7810E Skid Loader. The 40-ft X 12-ft ceiling panel modules are being inspected over a 200-ft section of the tunnel, a portion of the $14.6-billion Central Artery/Tunnel project, following a late night collapse on July 10 that killed Milena Del Valle, 38, a passenger in a car driven by her husband Angel Del Valle, who suffered minor injuries. The tunnel connects I-90 to the Ted Williams Tunnel and Logan International Airport.

Massachusetts Turnpike Authority Chairman Matthew J. Amorello, who oversees the most expensive highway project in U.S. history, ordered the closure and inspections of about 15 modules on each side of the road after it was determined that nine imbedded anchors grouted into the tunnel roof gave way in a cascading fashion above the eastbound lane, leading to the module collapse. Each module contains five, 12-ft X 8-ft panels and weighs at least 10 tons. The remainder of the tunnel uses a unistrut system cast into the roof. The connector opened in 2003 but Modern Continental Construction Co, Inc, Cambridge, installed the panels in 1999. Modern issued a statement saying its ‘work fully complied with the plans and specifications provided by the Central Artery Tunnel Project’ and that the work was inspected and approved.
Inspectors from the Federal Highway Administration and the state are on site as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and subpoenas have been issued to project consultant Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff and Modern. STS, Chicago, HNTB, Boston and other firms have been called in to inspect all tunnel infrastructure including the I-93 tunnel complex and the Zakim Bunker Hill cable-stayed bridge. “Bechtel/ Parsons Brinckerhoff will cooperate fully with investigators but given that they are just starting to gather facts we have no further comment at this point,” says Andy Paven, B/PB spokesman.
CA/T replaced an antiquated 50-year old elevated highway running through downtown Boston. But escalating costs—a smaller version of the CA/T initially was figured at $2.3 billion—and tunnels leaks and charges of fraud and inferior concrete use have dimmed the project’s luster. The Del Valle death is the latest in a series of problems and may have far-reaching consequences as a host of politicians have jumped onto the incident.
Gov. Mitt Romney (R), is again calling for Amorello to step down and State Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly (D) has designated the site a crime scene and impounded the panels. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is seeking an independent investigation. Inspection work could be slowed because of legal requirements for photographing and cataloging all materials.
Amorello was appointed turnpike chairman in early 2003 following contentious board meetings over cost escalation and recovery that led to the removal of his predecessor, James J. Kerasiotes. The authority questioned B/PB’s oversight. Amorello has been the object of Romney’s ire since debris fell onto the I-93 tunnel roadway and the discovery of numerous leaks in the I-93 tunnel, which prompted a public outcry and several contactor-funded remedies, Modern among them.
Amorello says he has no intention of stepping down. Romney has presidential aspirations and Reilly is hoping to become governor but faces a stiff primary. Reilly has been criticized for his tepid pursuit of cost recovery actions and has acknowledged receiving campaign contributions from CA/T contractors.
by ENR

Expert Witnesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07900398154407647098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361409.post-1152727357796148732006-07-12T11:01:00.000-07:002006-07-12T11:04:28.983-07:00New Ditch Witch XT1600 A Triple ThreatThe Charles Machine Works, Inc. (CMW), manufacturer of Ditch Witch underground construction equipment, has expanded its compact utility equipment offering with its new XT1600 excavator-tool carrier.
The new Ditch Witch XT1600 excavator-tool carrier is designed to perform the work of three machines: a backhoe loader, mini excavator, and compact track loader. “The combined power, productivity, and versatility of the XT1600 make this an exceptionally efficient and cost-effective machine,” says Mike Lumbers, CMW senior compact utility product manager. “When you take into account the monthly maintenance, fuel, labor and transport expense of three machines versus one XT1600, it’s easy to see how this remarkable new unit can save contractors a considerable amount of time and money.”
Equipped with a 59-hp diesel engine, the versatile XT1600 is a ride-on unit that features a 260-degree excavator sweep that enables the operator to dig in multiple positions in confined places, including offset digging along walls, fences, and buildings. “The XT1600 has a relatively small footprint, which is an advantage in terms of maneuvering around tight jobsites and also in terms of transport,” says Lumbers. “At only 9,500 pounds, it allows a variety of trailer and towing options.”
At the site, operators can expect a smooth ride from the XT1600, thanks to an innovative equalizer track system with pivoting rollers that keep more track on the surface. “Greater comfort for the operator means less fatigue,” says Lumbers. “And more track on the ground gives the machine greater stability, for easier loading and unloading.” Stabilizers on the excavator end, give the unit additional stability when excavating in tough soils. Operator comfort is further enhanced by the XT1600’s roomy operator’s station, which provides exceptional visibility for a machine its size.
The new XT1600 is extraordinarily versatile, capable of running a variety of compact utility attachments, including most full-size skid steer attachments. And with 30 net horsepower (22 kW) to the attachment, the XT1600 can perform a tremendous range of general construction, utility installation, road work, materials handling, demolition tasks, and landscaping. With the unit’s quick-disconnect fittings, attachments can be changed with the hydraulic system under pressure, so multiple jobs can be performed in less time.
The Ditch Witch organization specializes in the design and manufacture of high-quality underground construction equipment. The company is a one-stop source for trenchers, vibratory plows, pneumatic piercing tools, backhoes, electronic tracking and locating tools, horizontal directional drilling systems, drill pipe, downhole tools, vacuum excavation systems, mini excavators, excavator-tool carriers, and mini skid steers.
All of these products are recognized around the world for their advanced design, rugged construction, long-term durability, ease of use, and reliability. This product line represents the most complete range of equipment for installing utilities underground.
Ditch Witch is a name you can trust for your equipment and financial needs.
