Assisi Steps Back to the Middle Ages for the Calendimaggio

will be turned back over 500 years for the city’s
Calendimaggio Medieval pageant, with people dressed in period
costume, processions, performers playing on period
instruments, archers, flag-throwers and more...

Carnival in Umbria 2008

This year's Carnival festivities will officially end on February 5th,

although on February 9th Trevi will be holding its Carnevale dei Folli

and there will be an event on February 10th in Foligno.

Every village will also have a carnival party for the children

with a parade of adorned floats and cars and prizes for the most original.
The typical carnival sweet is the "castagnola",

deep fried lumps of sweet dough, which are dribbled with honey

and accompanied by a drink of thick hot chocolate!

The Fungi ( mushroom) festival

is happening this week in San Leo Bastia, one of our local villages. Fried, dried, sliced, pickled, battered, spiced and a few other ways I can’t remember, this lively festival, the 33rd, is now famous throughout central Italy and draws in hundreds of tourists to this sleepy little town nestled on the borders of Umbria and Tuscany, between Citta’ di Castello and Cortona on the old pilgrim route over the hills. In days gone by some of these religious travellers would have taken refuge at La Preghiera, and the small church annex still has a sloping floor which could be washed down after the pilgrims had left, as they weren’t necessarily of the cleanest. Today La Preghiera offers the traveller the highest standards of comfort in an exceptionally beautiful setting. Will you make the pilgrimage?

Ferragamo, Bulgari and Cinzano have now entered the “fashionable” wine business investing millions of Euro in vineyards, winerys etc. and offering best quality “boutique” wines for € 450 a bottle!!! As basic ingredients come from the soil, the water and the sun, all three of which are abundant in Umbria, our part of Italy, and our wine costs from € 2 a bottle maybe hype, spin and advertising are at work. However there are dozens of first class wine producers in our area who only produce a few thousand bottles per year, which is not sufficient for a marketing or advertising campaign, or even hype, spin or flim-flam, so we drink it locally. Maybe you’d like an introduction to our local winerys, September is the wine harvesting time, La Preghiera is the place, and Sally Ann is the girl.
