Have slowed down w/the UU Dome concerts. Not stopped - just slowed down. I have hopes of a classical one this summer w/two local wonderful classical artists, pianist John Hernandez & tenor Paul Diaz-Cobo. Also, in the not too distant future, I have hopes of organizing a concert or two featuring some of our talented local young musicians (teens & even younger) that I've met recently. Will post the details as soon as they get worked out..

I met Ellis and Terri Mazurek, her agent, at this year's Folk Alliance conference. Ellis had an official showcase in a fairly good-sized room. I enjoyed her set very much - as did the packed SRO crowd. To say that she was well received is an understatement. I later got a chance to meet her & Terri & told them about the house concerts & invited them to get in touch if they were ever headed this way & had an open date to fill.. And so it has come to pass. They are flying into Tampa & then headed to Sanibel for R&R. Ellis has some Tampa fans who rec'd word from her about the concert & theyhave already RSVP'd. But.. There is still plenty of space. Give me a shout if you'd like to attend.

The Dearing Concert Duo, featuring soprano Abha Dearing and classical guitarist Steven Dearing, will enthrall us with their classical music duets . Based in Detroit, Michigan they can be found performing on both sides of the Atlantic at festivals, on radio and television shows, and in various concert halls. They are the winners of six awards presented by the Motor City Music Foundation and their three recordings have received critical acclaim. Abha is the choir director at Birmingham Unitarian Church in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She's an accomplished singer and flautist who has been performing since the age of five. She is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Voice Performance at Oakland University. Steven holds a Masters degree in Guitar Performance and has been on faculty at the University of Windsor since 1995. He is one of Michigan's most reputable classical guitarists.

OPENING SET BY PIANIST JOHN HERNANDEZ: John is a native of Ecuador now residing in Tampa. He has made numerous appearances as recitalist and orchestra soloist. As a chamber musician, he has performed with members of symphony orchestras such as the Boston Symphony, Dusseldorf Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, and the National Symphony of Ecuador and has participated in festivals such as the Philharmonic Festival 1994, the First International Festival for Young Pianists in Ecuador, the Brevard Music Festival in North Carolina, the International Symposium and Piano Festival at Princeton University, the Contemporary Music Festival at New England Conservatory, and the New Paltz Summer Festival in New York.

He is the winner of national competitions in Ecuador such as the Guillermo Wright Vallarino Competition, the Cultural Merit for Outstanding Musician by the City Hall of Loja, and the German Cultural Center Competition. After receiving these recognitions, he became the youngest artist to be appointed to the Home of Culture of Ecuador. His versatility as a musician has led him to record for the soundtrack of the film “The Demoralization of Richard Engelsbird,” as well as “The Anthology of Ecuadorian Music,” a CD compilation of the most well known music of Ecuador.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree with Distinction from Salvador Bustamante Celi National Conservatory of Music, a Performance Diploma with Highest Honors from Rimsky Korsakov Conservatory of Music in Ecuador, a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Louisville.

Currently he works with the Tampa Bay Children’s Concert Chorus and various local ensembles. He is also the pianist for the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa much to the delight of the church choir and congregation.

THE ROWAN BROTHERS: Chris & Lorin's musical journey began over 30 years ago on Columbia Records. Subsequent collaborations with older brother Peter, David Grisman, the Grateful Dead, so many others and a Grammy winning song happened along the way. The path has come full circle with the duo's active re-entry into full time touring, a new release on BOS Music plus the full complement of CD reissues of all the Columbia and Asylum titles. Sibling harmony at its zenith and a style all their own, the Rowan Brothers offer up a potent mixture of bluegrass flavored folk and Everlys/Louvins/Stanleys inspired rockabilly.

SUE CUNNINGHAM: During their current Fla. tour they are being joined by Sue Cunningham. Sue is a winner of numerous fiddle championships and has performed and recorded with numerous bluegrass groups. Originally from Dublin Ireland, Brendan has been a resident of St Pete Beach since the early 90s. He has since endeared himself to acoustic music fans, not only in the St Pete/Tampa Bay area, but all across the state and beyond. Brendan's performances are spiced with good humor and innovative musicianship on guitar and bodhráán, and as Steve Winick noted in Dirty Linen magazine, "a rich baritone voice."

On Sunday Jan 18, from 3pm to approx 7pm, there will be a mini-Florida Folk Music Festival/event entitled "APALACHICOLA DOIN' TIME" taking place inside the UU Dome. (There will also be a pre-event acoustic songcircle outside on the grounds from 1:00 - 2:45; participants and listeners welcome. ) Friends of Florida Folk, Inc, and the UU Church of Tampa are teaming up to present this event, the theme of which was inspired by theEdward R. Morrow award winning Radio Documentary of the same name. The documentary, which was produced by the University of Florida and WUFT FM,Gainesville, is about the Tri-State Water Wars (Fla, Ga, Ala) andFlorida's precarious water situation . During the event, there will be mostly music but also brief commentary by environmentalist Dale Crider and by Bill Beckett and Donna Green-Townsend of WUFT. The featured musicians in our lineup provided songs for the documentary. They will perform not only those songs, but also additional ones of their choice. There will also be a beautiful nature artwork display by Roxanne Tobiason of Brandon. It's that special time of the year. Time for political fundraisers. Phyllis Busansky is running for Supervisor of Elections, Hillsborough County. Folk musicians enjoy supporting political causes. Thus some of the area's finest folk musicians are pleased to be gathering at the SkipperDome in support of Phyllis' campaign. Please keep in mind. "Folk" can cover a lot ofterritory - both traditional & contemporary. From old-timey banjo pickin' to contemporary singer-songwriter originals. This mini-folk fest starts at 2 pm and ends at approximately 6 pm. Altho it's in support of a political campaign, the public is invited to come out and experience fabulous folk music regardless of one's political persuasion.

Our charming Emcee will be Ms Jan Milner. Our able soundguy will be MrBryan Smeed. A fine time will be had by all.

On the Florida scene, he cites, among others, the likes of Steve Blackwell andFrank Thomas. She was born and raised on a farm in thefoothills of the Appalachians and has family roots in Sand Mountain,Alabama, from whence many great "old-time" musicians have come. PamelaJo sings and plays guitar and claw-hammer banjo. Her vocals are sweet andpure, bathed in southern charm. She performs music rooted deep in earlyAmerican history, pre-civil war era and beyond the seas to the "oldcountry." Charles Zhu, King High School graduate and former violinist with the Tampa Bay Youth Orchestra, is a freshman at Yale University where he has joined the folksinging group Tangled Up In Blue (which was founded in 1986). www.yale.edu/tuib Charles is returning to Tampa over spring break. However, he is not coming home alone. Instead, he's bringing 10 of his closest friends, all of whom are fun lovin' guys and gals who very much enjoying singing. Some members of the group, in addition to singing, also provide instrumental accompaniment. Their repertoire includes everything from traditional folk songs to the songs of Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. Since their UU Dome concert falls on St Patty's Day afternoon, they will also toss a few Irish songs into the mix to help celebrate the occasion.

The group has performed with the likes of Arlo Guthrie, Raffi, and Dar Williams. Great voices and sweet harmony! Lots of enthusiasm! This UU Dome Concert promises to be a delight. Come Celebrate St Pattys Day afternoon at the Dome with Tampa's own Charles Zhu and the Yale University Folksingers.

Wil is a past winner of the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest winner (@ Merlefest); Robert Bowlin is a former Bill Monroe Bluegrass Boy, and has played with the Osbourne Brothers, Kathy Mattea, Maura O'Connell, Tom T.Hall, Farron Young, Richard Greene, to name a few. Wil plays acoustic guitar and sings lead. Her songs and style arecontemporary folk, and she is often compared to Nanci Griffith. Robert plays acoustic guitar (and sometimes fiddle) and sings harmony. He's a former winner of the National Flatpicking Guitar Championship. To say that he's an outstanding "picker" is putting it mildly. DJ Dave Higgs of Nashville Public Radio says this about Wil & Robert: "Absolutely, hands-down some of the most mesmerizing, exciting, interesting and enjoyable acoustic music I have ever heard. Wil's songs are just in a league of their own."

Orrin Star is in a league of his own too. He's vocals are twangy & bluegrassy. His humor is - well - laughable .. Orrin Star is an award-winning guitarist who combines hot picking, cool singing and good humor. Once described as ‘Arlo Guthrie-meets-Doc Watson’, he is a past National Flatpicking Guitar Champion, has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, and boasts a repertoire that ranges from from bluegrass standards to little-known folk gems to fingerstyle blues.

WHO: THE DRAGIEVA STRING QUARTET.
WHEN: Thursday 11/15. Concert 8:00. Doors 7:30.
COST: $10 at the door. $8 advance.

The members of the quartet are OLGA DRAGIEVA, first violin; BENNETT ASTROVE, second violin; AMY MENARD, viola; and TOM KERSEY, cello. Ms Dragieva, a virtuoso from Bulgaria, is the concertmaster of the USF symphony orchestra. She dazzles with a brilliant, bright sound. Mr. Astrove, the youngest in the group, is ahead of his time and already a first violinist in serveral orchestras. He lends beautiful, cantabile harmonies to the music. Ms. Menard, a Florida native, has been prinicpal violist of multiple orchestras. Her rich sound is the heart of the quartet. Mr. Kersey, a professional cellist and composer, completes the sound of the group with hiswarm, deep, sonorous tones. Theirs is music to stimulate the mind and delight the senses.

TAFEE PRESENTS: JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE W/TED WRAY OPENING. In comparing Justin Townes Earle to his father, Steve Earle, it's apparent that the apple hasn't fallen too far from the tree; however, with his impressive new EP, Yuma, it's also apparent that Justin has quite a bit in common with the man who gave him his middle name. Like the late Townes Van Zandt, Justin uses a base of acoustic blues and traditional folk to build his own brand of American roots music. ( Per Justin: "On Yuma, I do take a very traditional approach because it's what I've done the longest." ) Justin also shows influences from both Van Zandt and the elder Earle in his choice of a narrative style of songwriting that eschews self-expression in favor of speaking through various characters.

ABOUT TED WRAY: Ted was a founder of the Tampabay Fingerstyle Guitar Guild. A. REVIEW OF RECENT CONCERTS BY ME

On July 29, 2007: South Tampa House Concert/Potluck/Circle Jam featuring Dean Station w/opening act Ms. Goody. This was a very enjoyable event. Ms. Goody provided a great opening set. Dean Station was a big hit. Personable, warm, & very talented trio. The jam was a hit. At one point we had 3 spoon players jamming. Very cool! As for future house concerts, we do hope to resume them soon, but for now we're taking a little break.

On July 8 2007: Tantalus Quartet was featured at CONCERTS IN THE UU DOME. They brought the house down - as expected - We had a good turnout. Unbelieveable that a trio with this much talent & charm & personality would be performing at our rather smallish Dome - but we're not complaining. They sure lived up to this quote: "The Tantalus Quartet gave an electrifying performance..."

On Sunday Aug 12 AMY CAROL WEBB w/Rebekah Pulley were featured at CONCERTS IN THE UU DOME. Ms Amy was (same as Tantalus) ELECTRIFYING. ALSO AMAZING - DYNAMIC - OUTSTANDING & every other complimentary adjective one can come up with. Sweet Rebekah was a big hit too. She's sweet & talented & easy on the ears. ( Also - Amy was the guest speaker at the Sunday church service -- and she had everyone hanging on her every word. She's quite the dynamic speaker. One church member exclaimed that if we had her in our pulpit every Sunday, we wouldn't have room for the throngs that would be showing up to hear her)

Concerts in the UU Dome Presents:BLIND WILLIE JAMES & DAVID LEE MAXWELL

ABOUT WILLIE: Blind Willie James is known for his inspiring versions of blues and gospel songs. James is originally from Live Oak in north Florida. He was born blind and was orphaned at an early age. Early on, he sang gospel music in church He began playing the piano while a student at the Florida School for the Blind in St. Augustine (where one of his classmates was Ray Charles).

Over the years he has collaborated with a variety of musicians, including the late Diamond Tooth Mary McClain with whom he appeared several times at the Florida Folk Festival; and in the early 90s the two did an appearance at Carnegie Hall. For a short time he was also a member of The Blind Boys of Alabama.Willie learned to sing by oral tradition. He learned to play the piano by ear. Immersed in the traditional Black Gospel music indigenous to the backwoods of North Florida, Willie's music exemplifies the blurring of lines between gospel and blues. Willie will sing a soul-stirring "Motherless Child" and then go into a suitable-for-late-night version of Hank Ballard's "The Twist," rife with all the innuendo the writer intended.

In 1999 Blind Willie James received the prestigious Florida Folk Heritage Award from the Governor of the State of Florida.

Altho he is getting on up in years, Willie still has much to offer. He is an entertainer extraordinaire. It's important that he not be allowed to rest too much on his laurels. Now with David Lee Maxwell as his musical partner & sidekick, we can all look forward to losing our blues courtesy of Willie & David .

BLIND WILLIE JAMES & DAVID LEE MAXWELL Sunday Sept 16. 3 p.m. $10.

ABOUT WILLIE: Blind Willie James is known for his inspiring versions of blues and gospel songs. James is originally from Live Oak in north Florida. He was born blind and was orphaned at an early age. Early on, he sang gospel music in church He began playing the piano while a student at the Florida School for the Blind in St. Augustine (where one of his classmates was Ray Charles). Over the years he has collaborated with a variety of musicians, including the late Diamond Tooth Mary McClain with whom he appeared several times at the Florida Folk Festival; and in the early 90s the two did an appearance at Carnegie Hall. For a short time he was also a member of The Blind Boys of Alabama.

Willie learned to sing by oral tradition. He learned to play the piano by ear. Immersed in the traditional Black Gospel music indigenous to the backwoods of North Florida, Willie's music exemplifies the blurring of lines between gospel and blues. Willie will sing a soul-stirring "Motherless Child" and then go into a suitable-for-late-night version of Hank Ballard's "The Twist," rife with all the innuendo the writer intended. In 1999 Blind Willie James received the prestigious Florida Folk Heritage Award from the Governor of the State of Florida. Altho he is getting on up in years, Willie still has much to offer. He is an entertainer extraordinaire. It's important that he not be allowed to rest too much on his laurels. Now with David Lee Maxwell as his sidekick, we can all look forward to losing our blues and joining Willie & David in Willie's signature dance: THE BLIND WILLIE.

Has it really been 5 years ago since I first organized a concert for David? Oh boy. How time flies. In 2002 David wasn't old enough to rent a car so transportation had to be arranged for him to get from N.C. (Merlefest) to Tampa. Thanks to Sherry & David, the transportation problem was solved. Now, 5 years later, David is old enough to rent a car. He's also had 5 years to hone his musicianship -- which was fantastic back then -- & now even more so. In 1972 Peter Lang was discovered by the legendary guitarist John Fahey who signed him to his (Fahey’s) record label. Charley is a well-known singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and music teacher. His long musical career has taken him from coast to coast and abroad, during which time he shared the stage with the likes of Bill Monroe, Merle Travis, Ricky Skaggs. He recentlyand currently is sharing the stage with several young talented European musicians such as fiddler Jiri Kralik.

Charley has performed at the annual Florida Folk Festival for the past 25 years. He has presented historical musical shows around the state for the Florida Humanities Council. He is also the director of the Sunshine State Acoustic Music Camp (a weekend music campwhich takes place annually in St Petersburg). In 1989 the Florida Department of State honored him by naming him a Florida Master Artist.

Charley will be home in Largo for a while in May before embarking on another ambitious tour. Before he takes off for world stages, we're having this get-to-gether/ pot luck/ circle jam/socializing event in his honor. PLUS - Himself will be doing a concert for us. Don't miss it.

Friends of Florida Folk, Inc., a non-profit organization is celebrating its 25th year in '07. No charge but donations appreciated. Featured will be Art Crummer & Friends (acoustic blues); Dale Webber &Linda Fackeldey (old-time); Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen (folk); RayBelanger & Lloyd Goldstein (classical folk). It's not open to the public. But I wanted to tout it. It's a neat thing to expose the kids to some good ole folk music. And Curtis & Loretta with their great talent, old-timey looks & multi-instruments (most of which the kids have probablynever seen or heard) will be good ambassadors of Folk. In addition to the below Concerts in the UU Dome, I'm also organizing a TAFEE/Tampa Acoustic Folk Etc Enthusiasts Concert on May 2nd at Skipper's Smokehouse featuring CARRIE HAMBY & DAVID LEPORATI DUO. This Tallahassee twosome list their influences as the Carter Family, the Stanley Brothers, and the late great mandolin player Buzz Busby. David is also being influenced by California Honky Tonker Johnny Dilks. David plays mandolin and mandola. Carrie plays guitar and accordion. Carrie & David are adept at their instruments and their armonies are reminiscent of great old-timey duet singers such as Tracy Schwarz & Ginny Hawker.

1/19/06 UPDATE: Johnny Bellar, who was scheduled to be Roy Harper's sideman for this concert, can't make it. Art Crummer is replacing him. Art is a favorite among Florida music fans who enjoy traditional folk, acoustic blues, and old-time music. He is a multi-year first place winner of the Florida Old-Time Music Championships in the dobro, flat-pick and fingerstyle guitar categories and the male singing category. In addition to solo performances, Art has performed in various Florida groups over the years, including The Don Grooms Band and Blues Country. He is also a respected dobro/reasonator guitar teacher and appears at many state-wide festivals, including the annual Florida Folk Festival. He is honored to be playing with Roy Harper and sitting in for his Dobro hero Johnny Bellar.

MUSICAL DINOSAURS INVADE THE UU DOME

Self-described ''musical dinosaur" ROY HARPER and his super sideman JOHNNY BELLAR will "invade" the Dome on Friday Jan 20th. JIM KAUFMAN & ALICE MCKAY, Pinellas Park "musical dinosaurs," will kick off this great night of old-time country music with an opening set.

Eighty year old ROY HARPER, a retired railroad brakeman from Manchester, Tennessee, has devoted his life to continuing the music traditions that he heard as a child while listening to the likes of Uncle Dave Macon, Arthur Smith, Sam & Kirk McGee, Riley Puckett and Jimmie Rodgers. Jimmie Rodgers is remembered as "the father of country music" and "the singing brakeman." Per Dr. Charles Wolfe, a music historian from Middle Tenn State University: “No one in the country does old Jimmie Rodgers songs better than Roy.”

Roy began performing professionally (singing, playing guitar and harmonica), over 50 years ago. He's still at it today, performing at numerous festivals and teaching children through Arts In Education programs. In 1999 he was inducted into the Old-Time Country Music Hall of Fame. He has a huge number of awards, including the Folklife Heritage Award which he received in 2003 from the Governor of Tennessee. Roy has recorded 20 plus albums, including a series of projects for Old Homestead Records.

JOHNNY BELLAR, Roy's sideman, is a virtuoso player of the resophonic guitar (aka dobro) and the lap steel guitar. In July 2005 Johnny won the National Resonator Guitar Championship (in Todd, NC). Born and raised near Nashville, Johnny was introduced to music at an early age. From 1974 -1984 he performed with The Stoneman Family and appeared with them on TV shows such as Hee Haw, the Ralph Emery Show and the Tommy Hunter Show. He has appeared on the Grand Ole Opry with Wilma Lee Cooper and is a sought after session player in Nashville. Johnny is also Roy Harper’s long-time accompanist and sideman.

JIM KAUFMAN: For many years Jim & Peggy Kaufman have hosted a weekly old-time country music circle jam session in their home. Their hospitality is widely known and appreciated. Altho Peggy is not a musician (but she makes great coffee), Jim sings and plays the harmonica and reasonator guitar and is a former first place winner in the dobro and harmonica categories of the annual Florida Old Time Music Championships.

ALICE MCKAY is a frequent participant in the circle jam sessions. Alice performs vintage country and western music. And – Oh Boy Can She Yodel! She yodels in the style of Gene Autry and Patsy Montana. In 1933 at age 9 she began singing professionally in Chicago on WLS Radio National Barn Dance. (WLS stood for World's Largest Store = Sears.) Later, as a young married woman, she gave up singing because her husband only liked classical music. In the early 70s, with a new husband who encouraged her to use her talents, she began singing again and is still going strong. She has opened for Porter Wagoner, performed with Tampa's Bluegrass Parlor Band, and has appeared at various music festivals and community events. In 1991 she made her first recording – which has been included in the Library of Congress. She is a past winner in the category of old-time singing at the Florida Old Time Music Championships.

Roy Harper jokes that he's a "musical dinosaur." Jim & Alice may sometimes do the same. But truth is, old-time country music is alive &amp;amp; well today; and there are many folks (young & old alike) who greatly enjoy and appreciate old-time country music and are thrilled when they get the chance to experience it . Thus, the invasion of the “musical dinosaurs” is eagerly anticipated.

HOWDY. WELCOME TO MY BLOG.The Blog's purpose is help spread the word about the TAFEE Concert series, the Concerts in the UU Dome series, & add'l concerts which I help organize and/or wish to help publicize. Concerts are catch as catch can. No set schedule.

TAFEE = Tampa Acoustic, Folk, Etc., Enthusiasts. It's not an organization per se; just a name I came up w/to identify the concerts. TAFEE Concerts are held at Skipper's Smokehouse on occasional Tuesday nights (TAFEE Tuesday).

"Concerts in the UU Dome" are held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa. For directions, etc. check out the church website at http://www.uutampa.org/ . There's also a concert schedule at the web site.

12/11/05 UU DOME: SOUTHWIND w/Kathleen Brindley. $10. 3pm. We're happy to welcome this fabulous folk group back for its 8th annual concert. SOUTHWIND is a popular Florida Folk acoustic group that combines the talentand artistry of four area musicians who hail from Hillsborough, Pinellas,and Pasco Counties: Mary Ann Dinella, Sandra Jemison, Sharon Nauman, andDennis Devine. Southwind's sound is an eclectic blend of close harmoniesand unique arrangements featuring the use of multiple instruments. They do a mix of traditional, contemporary and original songs. For the Holiday concert, they will also do a mix of both holiday & non-holiday tunes. Ofcourse, there will be some sing-a-long songs. 12/16/05 UU DOME. 8pm. $12. MPE BAND w/W.F. Sonny Ebsary, III. in a holiday concert. Maggi, Pierce & E.J. continue to create a Big Buzz. Audiences go bonkers over their down-home farm city junk music; ie, a creative blend of roots music and rock n roll. And since the holidays are just around the corner, they promise to include some special MPE style holiday music when they hit The Dome. Influenced by a wide range of musicians such as Joni Mitchell and Johnny Cash, they also carry on the tradition of great rock harmonies inherited from the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross and The Who. http://www.mpeband.com/

Opening the show will be: UU Church of Tampa future Rock N Roll Star, 8-year old W.F. "SONNY" Ebsary, III. Rock N Roll Sonny enjoys writing and singing his own songs. His favorite bands include Pink Floyd, Metallica and Green Day. In addition to enjoying music, Sonny also enjoys creating his own comic books, riding his bike and playing with friends.

This is a farewell concert as Vonn is moving to the Big Apple to work with the renowned Pauline Oliveros who since the 1960s has influenced American Music through her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual. Wed, Nov 16, 1pm: (yes- 1 pm) UU DOME. SMALL POTATOES. Cost- By Donation. Prior to the concert, from noon - 1 pm, there will be a BYO sack lunch & socializing hour. Drinks & goodies will also be available for purchase. Folks are welcome to come early for the BYO lunch or for the concert only. The concert will be 1-set and will last a little over an hour ( 1 hr, 15 min approx) . To kick off what we hope will be the first of a series of these mid-week afternoon concerts, we can think of no one better to do the honors than the deligtful Chigago duo -- SMALL POTATOES. www.smallpotatoesmusic.com
This duo is comprised of Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso. They are entertaining, energetic, eclectic and extremely talented. At their performances, one hears two great voices, fine guitar playing, and a touch of tin whistle, flute, mandolin, bodhran, and other percussion toys. Ya don't wanna dare miss the SPUDS.
Gloria's Comments: This was our first mid-week aft concert. It was fun. Nice socializing time & great music by Small Potatoes. We'll probably do some more of these "afternoon delight" concerts.

At the crossroads of bluegrass and folk, Compass Records recording artist Jake Armerding is building a national reputation as an outstanding singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
