Hi:
My daughter is getting married Aug 8, 2009 at a private home on Sunset Beach. We are having both the wedding and reception on the beach in front of the house. She wants to be married at Sunset but are thinking of a wedding at 5:00-6;00PM with reception following. We are looking at having approximately 60 guests. We need help with the following:
caterer - we are thinking of a buffet menu offering some Hawaiian dishes as she is marrying a native Oahu guy who loves his poi, kalbi ribs and kahlua pig, as well as Salmon etc
Bakery - they want to serve cupcakes instead of cake, and also have cheesecake and maybe other desserts
Florist - we need help with the bouquets, and they want a petal aisle to a bamboo arch on the beach.
Wedding Officant - They will need help finding a minister and planning the ceremony (I don't think they know yet what type of ceremony they want, so will need help with that0
Music - They would like Hawaiian music before the ceremony, during a cocktail hour (while they are having pics taken) and during dinner. They would also like to have hula dancers after dinner.
Tents, tables chairs, linens etc - We would like the reception to be under a tent, with coordinating linen etc.
Reception florals and accents - we would want simple tablepieces - we have seen tall glass vases wrapped with bamboo with orchids, lilies or other such flowers. She wants lots of candles, and paper lanterns inside the tent. White lights as well?
Photographer - we would like suggestions here.
Our budget - well we aren't sure where to start, so need help with what things really cost , then go from there.
We will be taking care of the liquor and bartender, but not the catering staff. We will also provide the leis for our guests as Rodney's family still lives on the island and are doing this for the wedding.
We would like a day of wedding coordinator there.
We plan on coming to Hawaii to plan November 3-9, and would like to meet wih a selected planner at that time to cement the details for the wedding. Hawaii is very famous around the globe for its hula dance. When people daydream about the Hawaiian Islands, there is no doubt that their minds would also drift towards this renowned dance. Tourists could also learn how to do the hula, particularly during luaus. The hula is a form of dance that is accompanied either by a song or a chant. It was the Polynesians, which are acknowledged as the original Hawaiian settlers, who developed the hula in the islands. The song or chant that goes with the hula is called the mele and what the hula dancers actually do is to dramatize or interpret the mele.

There are various styles of the hula dance, but they are usually split into just two broad groups, which are kahiko and auana. Kahiko is what the locals call the ancient hula, which was performed prior to Hawaii’s encounters with the West. The kahiko is tied in with chants as well as some traditional instruments. The hula kahiko is presented these days by dancing gracefully to Hawaii’s historical chants. Plenty of hula kahiko are exemplified by the dancers’ traditional costumes, by their solemn looks, as well as by showing respect for their religious roots.

Auana is the hula dance that evolved during the both the 19th and 20th centuries, when Hawaii is already under the Western influence. While you wouldn't want to take a dip in the dubious waters of the Ala Wai, the 1.4-mile paved path alongside the canal is perfect for a scenic walk or jog. All beaches in Hawai‘i are open to the public. Water temperatures reach 78 degrees in the summer and 74 degrees in the winter. THE BLOW HOLE (HALONA LOOKOUT)

MAKAPU‘U LIGHTHOUSE ACCESS ROAD
A moderate hike with spectacular ocean views. The lighthouse uses prism glass in its lamp and has been functioning for more than 100 years. The bunkers near the top were constructed during World War II and are referred to in James Jones' novel, "From Here to Eternity." Offshore is Rabbit Island. Although it is shaped like a rabbit, the island is so named because a rancher released rabbits there to breed in the 1880s.

NU‘UANU PALI LOOKOUT

The Pali (meaning "cliff" in Hawaiian) rises 1,186 feet above sea level, offering a panoramic view of windward O‘ahu. Keep a tight hold on hats (and small children), as it gets very windy up there.
This is the spot where King Kamehameha the Great drove opposing armies over steep cliffs (to their deaths) in the Nu'uanu Pali Battle for the island of O'ahu. This secured a victory in his quest to unite all of Hawai'i.
Where: Up Highway 61 (Pali Highway); look for the turnoff toward the top

QUEEN KAPI‘OLANI PARK
Named after Queen Kapi‘olani, wife of King David Kalakaua, the park boasts jogging paths, bike paths, and a whole lot of open space for recreational pursuits. The Royal Hawaiian Band plays at the bandstand every Sunday, 2-4 p.m.

All the free entertainment you could ask for on this two-mile stretch of sand. Start at the Hale Koa Hotel and make your way to the Natatorium War Memorial (the largest saltwater pool in the United States), or do it in reverse. An especially nice walk at sunset, as the tiki torches outside the hotels are lit and evening entertainment begins to warm up.

WHALE WATCHING
While whale-watching tours are memorable, many visitors don't realize that these gentle behemoths can often be seen at play from the shore, even without binoculars. Look for them between December and April, when they're most active. Note: drive carefully on this narrow road and look for a safe place to pull over before you let your eyes wander to the sea.

Always choose professional musicians and don't be afraid to check what qualifications they have. Most ensembles or bands will be able to provide you with a demonstration CD or tape to give you an idea of the quality of their playing.

Experienced musicians will be able to provide advice on suitable repertoire for the different aspects of your wedding day, and should be able to send you a list of the pieces that they play. They will find it helpful if you then make your own list of the items that you particularly like and also any that you dislike.

If you are having a civil wedding, you must make sure that none of the music played during the ceremony has a religious connection. You may be asked by the registrar to provide a list of the items that will be performed.

If your wedding reception is in a public place (i.e. a hotel, restaurant or hall) then that venue requires a licence for the performance of music that is still in copyright. It is up to the venue (and not you or the performers) to obtain a licence, but if they have weddings there regularly they will probably already have one. If your reception is taking place in a private location (for instance in a marquee in the garden of a private house) no licence is required. Similarly, the PRS do not licence the performance of music during "Divine Service in churches or other places of worship". More information is available from the Performing Rights Society.

Establish contact with your musicians two or three weeks before your wedding to confirm arrangements and to finalise details of the music that will be played.

Some thought will need to be given to the placement of live musicians so that the volume of the music never interferes with guests' conversations. Discuss this with your contact at the reception venue if you are worried, and mention any concerns you have to the musicians themselves as they will be used to bearing this in mind when they play. Your musicians will also need a room in which to leave their instrument cases so that they are safe and out of the way.

When you visit your reception venue make sure that you have checked that there will be enough room to position the band or ensemble. Check with the musicians as to how much room they will need for their instruments, music stands, amplifiers and so on, and ask them if they have any special seating requirements. String players, for example, require chairs without arms in order to bow their instruments properly.

Your musicians will require short breaks from time to time. It is a good idea to provide them with some refreshments, and depending on the time of day something to eat as well.

If you are going to ask your musicians to play outside, it is helpful to make sure that there will be some form of shelter from the sun. The varnish on some instruments can be ruined by strong sunlight.

Double-check what procedure the band or ensemble has in the event that one of its members is unwell. They will probably have a list of experienced deputies, but it is worth making sure.

James Cook was the most significant of the European explorers to visit Hawaii, because it was he who recorded its existence. James Cook was a captain in the Royal Navy, and of his many achievements, another significant effort in cartography was the first mapping of Newfoundland. James Cook made two major visits to Hawaii, and unfortunately died there. One of his minor vessels was stolen by a lesser Hawaiian chief, and for ransom, James Cook kidnapped another minor chief. In an outrage, the natives of the island fought back, and killed him.

Christian weddings and marriage in Europe was a detailed ceremony, and still is; it requires government and legal contracts, licenses, and involvement. Whether the first visitors in Hawaii were Irish, Spanish, or British, the wedding ceremonies of the Hawaiians would have caused immediate shock; because there were none. Not officially anyway. The different wedding ceremonies would vary from tribe to tribe, or island from island. Some of the traditional wedding rituals may have extended for days, or even weeks; other traditional ceremonies required the consent of every member of the family. In other areas or tribes, a wedding or marriage might have only been the decision of two individuals to sleep in the same bed, and start a family. When a Hawaiian couple married in this fashion, if it was their decision to separate, they merely returned to their own families. If they had children together, the offspring would be nurtured by the entire family. These customs would have been viewed by Europeans as largely uncivilized and primitive, considering the strict Christian rules of marriage amongst European men and women.

Rigid and legal religious marriages in Europe, in comparison to these relaxed and free traditions of the Hawaiian people would have naturally been a shock to the British James Cook, or the hypothetical Irish and Spanish visitors. The two cultures would have differed greatly, and the Hawaiian tribes were most likely viewed to be savages with no sense of morality. After James Cook died in Hawaii, his published information about the islands was distributed in several books. This led to several more visitors to the islands; whalers, traders, explorers. It is likely that European women were most likely not introduced to the Hawaiian islands for a great deal of time. The British explorers would have considered a lady amongst an "uncivilized" people, scandalous, improper, and most likely dangerous.

However, had European women been among traders, whalers, or explorers, and witnessed the wedding and marriage practices of Hawaiians, shock would most likely have been prevalent. And then perhaps tinged with envy, for the free nature that men and women were allowed to couple with one another. Fear may have also been a factor. Hawaiian men, with rough clothes if any, would have most likely made any European of possible rape, because of the free nature of their romance with women. Whether or not the fear of rape among visiting European women in the late 1700's is unfounded is just speculation. The more intricate feasts might have been viewed with awe as well. Flowers and family played a major role in traditional antique Hawaiian wedding rituals. Beautiful and pleasantly scented flowers would be hung over the bride and groom's neck in leis and garlands.

European men, on the other hand, might have viewed things from a slightly different angle. Without lawful marriages such as those in the European countries, men may have taken liberties with the Hawaiian women. It is ironic, that the most likely attitude among the whaling men, sailors and businessmen was that it was improper for European women to be among the locals, since it's most likely that European men took advantage of the local Hawaiian women. Hawaiian women may have been seen as nothing more than unattached, and available playthings for men to slake their lust upon, since their Hawaiian marriages were not religious or legally binding. Although it's as of yet hypothetical, there were most likely a large number of Hawaiian-European children born among the Hawaiian islands, once Europe established and maintained contact with the islands.

The reaction from both European genders were also most likely with an entertained attitude. The wedding feasts extending over weeks, dancing, and music, as well as other events that celebrated the act of consummation between bride and groom were positive and festive occasions. There would be much celebration among the families of the bride and groom, as well as friends. Some tribes had a specific day in which all couples with intent to marry could do so; it was treated as a major holiday in the culture. If Europeans were present, they would have been treated most likely with genial welcome or at least tolerant acceptance. It's possible that Europeans would have been entertained from an arrogant angle; considering the wedding rituals of the Hawaiian culture to be a great spectacle, or like a circus of performing animals. It would be naive to believe that none of these disease that were introduced were of the venereal type. European men most likely brought different forms of sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis, and gonorrhoea, and passed them along to Hawaiian women, who in turn, propagated the illness by sleeping with Hawaiian men. In the hypothetical case that European women ever slept with Hawaiian men willfully or otherwise, it is possible that European women may have also passed along sexually transmitted disease to the native islanders. Though possible, it is highly unlikely. Either way, the acts that took place in order to spread venereal disease throughout the Hawaiian islands is contingent on a lack of consideration and respect for Hawaiian marriage. This may have been an attitude shared by most, if not all visitors to the islands. In any case, the Hawaiian islands had been isolated from these and other types of diseases brought from Europe. The spread of disease wiped out the majority of the Hawaiian population, regardless of whether or not the liberties taken were the cause of a lack of respect for the traditions of Hawaiian locals, despite that this is the most likely case.

After disease made the population of the Hawaiian islands dwindle so severely, it was much easier for visitors to the islands to influence the small population. In 1820, American missionaries arrived in the islands, and spread the Christian religion throughout the region. This is also a sort of reaction to not only marriage ceremonies and wedding rituals in the Hawaiian culture, but also to the Hawaiian culture in general. In the present time, Gnostic and others of different religions can see that forcing other cultures to embrace a religion is not tolerant behaviour. This was an example of the Christian world and culture's intolerance to the beliefs and Hawaiian culture. Despite this past display of European and American oppression, Hawaii remained a largely independent region, until it willingly joined the United States. Also, despite the intolerance and arrogance shown to the Hawaiian religious and spiritual practices, many of the Hawaiian traditions remain intact today. Sixty percent of the Hawaiian population remains of "other" religious belief, while less than thirty percent embrace Christianity. Gradually, the traditional Hawaiian wedding ceremonies have merged with Christian wedding ceremonies, and like the rest of the United States, it is a legally binding contract. However, Hawaii also retains the power of common law marriage, along with a few other states in the U.S.

First, you want to find a location that expresses your theme. You can hold your wedding reception in some museums, so if you have a favorite museum, contact them and see if they can accommodate a wedding reception. Some museums have rooms set aside for this type of event, but others will allow you to choose a gallery and bring in to that particular gallery all of the things you will need for your wedding.

If you do not live near a museum that is able to make this type of accommodation, you can contact local art galleries to see if they will host a reception for you. But even if you cannot find a museum or a gallery, or if your budget won’t allow for this type of expenditure, don’t despair! You can download pictures of your favorite works of art from the internet or buy prints of favorite pieces to use in decorating whatever location you choose. You can find inexpensive photo frames that have a rich look in just about any discount store, and you can use them to make a gallery at any reception location.

When thinking wedding attire, you can really go one of two ways.
