After receiving an internationally renowned iF design award in 2008, laptopskins.net is a nominee nominee for the design award of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2010!

The Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany is the country‘s highest distinction in the field of design. It is known as the »Prize of Prizes«. The reason: no other design award sets such strict criteria on entries. Thus, a company can only enter the competition for the Design Award if its product has already been awarded a national or international design prize.

Another precondition for entry is that companies must have been nominated by the Ministries and Senators of the Federal States or by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

i just received the mail that this year's jury considered laptopskins.net worth an iF communcation design award!

For over fifty years iF Industrie Forum Design e.V. has had its roots at the Hannover exhibition center. Launched in 1953 as the Special Show for Well-designed Industrial Goods, this registered association as indicated by the German abbreviation e.V. was expanded in 2001 to include a new operating arm: iF International Forum Design GmbH. This organization is now responsible for all iF business areas above all for staging the renowned iF award competitions.

As an independent institution iF exercises a decisive mediating role between design and industry, fulfilling this function for many years now in an objective and reputable manner. This special capacity allows iF to make a significant contribution to the success of design services in an economic context as well as enhancing public awareness of the importance of design.

at least, that's what they say. Stumbling across lapschticks manufacturer schtickers.com today, I found resemblances that are more than a coincidence: schitckers.com is using laptopskins.net's own laptop photo to promote their own stickers.

Checking the the dates via the wayback machine, it turns out schtickers.com had been presenting their stickers as frontal photographs since the launch of their site:

then, in december 2006 laptopskins.net launches, as far as we know as the first site displaying laptop skins in a 3D position:

sometime in january of 2007, schtickers.com suddenly begins using the same angle, the same laptop model, lighted in the same way, to promote their laptop skins:

Taking the detail image from their site, resizing it a little and comparing it with what we consider to be the original image it turns out that the laptop photos are identical.

Well, it's good to see we seem to have had the right idea to present the skins like that - that makes us proud. And obviously, the photography seems be good as well - good enough for schtickers.com to use, anyway. Would have been nice to be asked though - copyright is copyright.

today i received the 2008 edition of the german advertising yearbook "Jahrbuch der Werbung" - and laptopskins.net made it into the book!

The jury judged many thousand entries, only a few of which made it into the book - I'm very proud of this achievement. Yay!

how to apply a laptop skin sticker to your notebook

a simple how-to instruction photo series on how to apply a laptop skin sticker to your notebook. these instructions generally apply to all kinds of notebook stickers, but they were photographed and written by and for www.laptopskins.net

step 1: make sure your notebook is clean. wipe it off with a soft cloth. the notebook should be free of dust, fat and grease - otherwise the laptopskin may not stick to your laptop as well as it's supposed to.

step 2: check if the laptop skin size is correct. you can always trim the size of the skin with a cutter knife. if your laptop has hinges like the one shown, you could cut out the hinges from the skin to have an even more perfect fit.

step 3: peel away a small part of the sticker.

step 4: align the laptop skin on your notebook. take care that you put it on straight and in the exact position that you want to place it. as long as you don't push down on the exposed part of the sticker, you're free to move the skin around as you wish.

step 5: stick down the first part of the skin once you're certain you have it in the right position.

step 6: peel off the remaining sticker backside slowly, while at the same time gently pushing down on the exposed skin. by sticking it on gently bit by bit, you can avoid air bubbles under the skin. if there are bubbles under the sticker, simply peel it back a little and stick it back on.

step 7: you're done! ta-daa! see, that was easy - and the result is stunning, don't you think?

i got the idea for these new laptop skin designs when we were relaxing and drinking tea during our holidays on juist, where they have a special kind of tea that you drink with cream in it. dropping the cream into the tea made some really beautiful, art-nouveau-esque pattern that i really, really liked. so the next time around, i took pictures and made these amazing designs into a laptop skin. let me know how you like it! : )

the trip to henrichshütte really paid off - i got amazing pics of old rusty metal that turned out amazing for use on skin designs. the colour variations are unbelievable - metal obviously undergoes some very weird decaying process. the result is simply beautiful, especially because of the strange effect of seeing your high tech notebook dressed in rusted steel.
