FALL IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER

Can you believe this weather. It almost feels like October instead of September. We have just received another assortment of Jersey, Ribbed and Slinky Knits in prints and solids. I have been starting to think about new fall/winter garments. I hope to have some new garments to show you by the end of this week.

Kwik Sew has some wonderful new patterns available. Several remind of patterns from the mid 80's but updated and ever so stylish. There is a great new jacket pattern that is made from a square of fabric with sleeves and pockets added. Take a look here . I am really excited about this garment. I want to make a few changes and have it ready for the cooler days of

Cross Country (Bryce is running again for the 6th year).

Here is a garment that one of our customers designed for a

friend that is getting married soon. I just had to share. I think

she did a fabulous job !!!! She is also making a pair a boy-cut

panties out of the same stretch lace that was used for the midriff

on the gown.

MORE JERSEY KNITS

A request came to me yesterday..... "I would like to see more of your Polyester/Lycra and Polyester Microfibered Jersey Knit Prints" So here they are.

58"-60" wide and $4 yd - $ 7 yd. # 1 and # 6 are brown background with Tan and Pink polka dots respectfully.

We are seeing lots of variety in knit tops made from this fabric. From a simple Single French Bound Round Neckline to a Draped Front or my favorite the Slash 'n Gathered (like the black/white polka previously posted).

WOW !!! It has been a great week at Needle Nook Fabrics. Lots of classes and some wonderful garments completed. M, D, T, B & T made great Basic T-Shirts, I have a new T-Shirt also. It is a great Sweater Knit of Cotton/Polyester. Although I love all types of white knit
fabrics, I was dyeing some fabrics and decided that a lavendar might be just what I needed in my wardrobe. This has a heathered look due to the polyester fiber not taking as much of the dye as the cotton fibers.
I am really happy with the color. The sleeves seem to be a bit big with this fabric, so I will be narrowing the width.
I have narrowed the width on this shirt and it fit much better.
Had it hanging on display at the store and sold it to a customer
that just had to have it to go with the pair of pants she had
brought in to match fabric.

Nine ladies are now perky and comfortable in their new bras. Sorry no pictures.....
I'm sure many of you are busy getting the children ready to start school next week. I am so greatful that the weatherman is predicting cooler than normal temps. Bryce, my son, is looking forward to his Senior year. He is very excited about his Auto Mechanics and Broadcast Production classes. Monica, my daughter, is getting her classroom ready in California for another year teaching 7th & 8th grade Math.

It would be great to hear from everyone. I just love your comments.

Several have been asking about lightweight knits of
gowns and tops so thought I would show you a few
of what is available.

These are wonderful jersey knits that are 58" - 60" wide with blends of 50%cotton/50%polyester or 100% cotton. The range in price from $4 yd to $6.50 yd. From left to right # 2, 3, 4 and 5 are all microfibered..... OH what a soft hand...........

Several have been asking about our fabrics. So here are some more pictures.

Here are a variety of Jersey and Ribbed Knit fabrics 58" - 60" wide with fiber contents of 100% cotton or 50%cotton/50% polyester. Some are microfibered. The prices are from $4 yd to $6 yd

These are wonderful microfibered jersey knits of 90% polyester/10% lycra.
58" - 60" wide and $7.50 yd The drape of these fabrics is very similar to Slinky. If you scroll down to my previous post you will see the far right fabric made up using Kwik Sew 2900 with a Reverse V-Neck and an added front band.

Great solid colors for fall in a beautiful Ottoman bottom weight with a fiber blend of 50%polyester/43% rayon/ 7% lycra. Slacks, Jackets Skirts and Tops will be perfect for any season. 54" wide and $7 yd. The colors are Brown, Wine, Dark Chocolate, Lime, Purple and Cobalt Royal.

Before leaving for the American Sewing Guild National Conference

I just could not resist making a trip to the warehouse for more fabric.

WHAT A GREAT TRIP !!! I found some great swimsuit prints, jersey

knit prints and wonderful Ottoman solids.... like 60 new bolts.....

I was able to get some great prices on these fabrics....come check

them out. Swimsuit $9yd, Jerseys $4-$4.50yd, Ottoman $ 7yd.

Conference was terrific, seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

Jennifer and Grace headed back to Wichita, Monica back to

California and Deb and I to Detroit for another Lecture/Workshop

Sewing for ME !!!! and Closing Reminder.

I am so excited. Last Friday evening Grace, my friend Denise and I stayed at the store and sewed. I cut out and made 2 new tops.

The fabric for this top is a Polyester/Lycra Jersey knit from Hi-Fashion Fabrics. Very soft and drapey. I used a contrast for the Reversed V-Neck and the front drape in a black with white pin dots. I plan on wearing this with slinky pants that are black with very small turquoise rectangles.

Below is probably my favorite style of knit tops. I saw this in a magazine several years ago and figured out how to copy the style. I call it my Slashed and Gathered. I have made this in solids, stripes and prints of all the same fabric. This time I decided to mix it up a bit with the opposite polka dot prints. The black with white is 100% cotton jersey and the white with black is 100% cotton ribbed knit. This top will be go with many other colors including my red slinky pants or skirt. Add a bit of red jewelry to top off the outfit. I also have turquoise trousers and jewelry that will be just a bit less bold.

Summer is Here

It has been a very busy past month. With all the end of school activities (my son Bryce is

now a Senior), Bra Workshops in Atlanta, Ga and Knoxville, Tn and all the daily happenings

at the store have left little time for posting. Here is the picture of the promised Striped

Cotton/Lycra Jersey Knits. They are all at least 60" wide and $6 yd.

I did find a couple of hours before leaving for the bra workshops and made two of my great-nieces swimsuits for their upcoming cruise. The suit on the left is from my scrap boxes and the suit on the right is a plaid cut on the bias. Both are Kwik Sew patterns.

Just a reminder: We will be closed July 4 - 12, 2008 and reopen on July 14th. A new class schedule will be posted by July 21. Mother's Day Wishes and MORE FABRICS

I know that this is a day late, but I hope every
Mother,Grandmother,Great-Grandmother and
Soon-to-Be Mother's ALL had a wonderful day.
I enjoyed greetings from my children then concluded
the day with a leisurely drive to Dallas......
YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS!!!

YEP, new fabrics. I unloaded over 50 bolts this evening.
Everything from soft yellow Slinky to several new
Swimsuit prints and even a chocolate brown swimsuit solid.
New geometric jersey knits that are so popular in
RTW(ready-to-wear).

Can anyone say STRIPES... more new fabrics arrived in the
store last Friday. Wonderful shirt weight cotton/lycra jersey
in the most gorgeous blend of colors. Even some for the men
in your family..... OH MY Father's Day will be here before we
know it, and the brown/blue/white/navy stripes would
make a perfect Polo/Rugby shirt. If they are not into stripes
we also have High Wicking Polyester LaCoste(pique) in silver,
navy, red and burgundy and for those that prefer cotton we
have red or kelly green in 80%cotton/ 20%polyester LaCoste
jersey knit. Photos of the fabrics coming soon!!!

Final Sew-In of the season was a great time for all.
Great food, lots of talk and even a bit of sewing....
Welcome Susan to the Needle Nook Family.... She and
I made new bras. Katie also worked on bras and pattern
drafts, Kathy had the most beautiful quilted wall hanging,
Beryl cut out garments, Dawna was playing with her new
Pfaff 2056 sewing machine, Laura and Ann did plenty
of shopping Deb worked on new pattern drafts and Grace
cut out a pair of jeans for herself from a pair that her brother
outgrew(can we say "Green" sewing).... We will all look
forward to sewing together at the next Sew-In August 9th.

Florida Workshops

I returned Monday, April 28 from Ft Myers and
West Palm Beach after completing
our 2 workshops with a total of 27 ladies....
Thank you ladies, Deb and I had a
great time meeting some and seeing others again.
In Ft Myers we were treated to a lovely dinner on
the Gulf Shores and a walk on the beach to find WOW,
lots of wonderful shells. Of course, being the typical
tourist Deb and I found ourselves with a couple of pockets
full of beautiful shells. In West Palm Beach we enjoyed
a fabulous dinner at Testa's a great Italian restaurant.
Once we were packed on Sunday we drove up the coast to
Jacksonville for the night. I flew home and Deb will arrive
back some time tomorrow. Deb took lots of pictures that
we will get posted as soon as we can get unpacked.

Although we have LOTS of you reading our blog, it would
be great to hear from you through the comments.

Workshop Announcement & Interesting Info

Anne & Deb are on there way to Florida and have all ready experienced a wide range of weather, humidity and BUGS! It is definitely a bit warmer than it has been in Wichita, but that just means sandal weather :)

Yippee!

We are just so excited! The phone has been ringing off the hook and old Needle Nookers have been stoping in.

We have in several new fabrics. Here is a sample of printed charmuses with complimentary solids. More photos and decriptions will be posted in the days to come.

Announcing: We now carry Jalie Patterns we have 13 different styles in stock, we will be adding more to complete the line. If you have not seen or sewn with these patterns they are great. I think the best thing is that all of the patterns come sized for children as well as adults (translation one purchased pattern will do the whole family)! As an added bonus this also means plus sizing. Jalie has printed the patterns on heavy weight paper ready for tracing, and all have at least 22 - 24 different sizes.

Store Excitement

This morning has started off with a bang or a Bing. Anne will be featured in The Wichita Eagle's Ten Questions With... of the WichiTalk section. Bonnie Bing and her photographer Jamie were here to do a photo shoot and an interview. However, we do not know when the article will appear. That means you dedicated Needle Nookers out there must check the blog for the link to the article and to see the ongoings at the store.

We would like to say a big THANK YOU to all of our customers and followers. Once again our Bra Workshop classes at the American Sewing Guild National Convention in Chicago have filled (in less than 1 week). Our lecture classes are still open, we do not have a limit for participants. We will once again have a booth at convention and are looking forward to seeing all of you again and meeting new friends.

Thanks to all of you for your support, encouragement and continued interest in bra making and garment construction. There are more things to do with your sewing machine than home dec and quilting. We appreciate all of you who continue to make garments for yourselves and for your families.

Tips & Techniques

Fitted Crib Sheet

The standard measurements of a crib mattress are 27"w x 52"l x 4"d

Cut a rectangle of Interlock, Jersey, Ribbed Knit, or Tricot 39" x 64" (Note: If using an interlock or ribbed knit and the fabric is at least 60" wide you will only need 1 1/8 yd, other wise you will need 1 3/4 yd.)

Cut a 6" square out of each corner of the rectangle

Miter each corner with an overlock stitch or serger

Using 90" (2 1/2 yd.) 3/8" Swimwear elastic serge or zig-zag to the wrong side of the fabric. Be sure to overlap the ends approximately 1/2". If desired, you can then turn the elastic to the wrong side of the sheet and zig-zag at the inside edge to give a more finished appearance.

Note: If your mattress is a different size you can do the following to figure the amount of fabric needed

The width of the mattress + two times the depth + 2" for the width of the fabric. The length of the mattress two times the depth = 2" for the length of of fabric.

Example: Mattress is 28"w x 54"l x 7"d. You will need a piece of fabric 44"x70"

To figure the amount of elastic needed, add the width + length then multiply by 2 the multiply that by 60%. The resulting number will be the amount of elastic needed.

Example: for the above mattress you will need 98" of elastic

We found a baby print and a butterfly print! As some of you know who visit the store sometimes we do not always have children and baby prints. We get a little excited when we do find them. Polka dots are very popular this season and we just thought these black & white ones were "stinkin cute."

New Class Schedule, Announcements, & New Fabrics

Needle Nook Fabrics will be closed July 4th - July 12th. Please mark your calendars. We have made this decision due to when the Independence holiday falls and when the American Sewing Guild is having their national conference (July 9 - July 13). We will be open at our regular hours and schedule on July 14th.

We will be open Memorial Day weekend Saturday, May 24th and reopen Tuesday, May 27th.

The next class schedule will be set starting in August.

These are Lycra Foil Fancies

Content: 80% Nylon, 20% Lycra with Foil embellishment
Cost: $11.00 per yard
The one horizontal is 46" wide, the one on the far left (Aqua) is 58" wide all the others are 60" wide.
The colors are aqua, black, pink, peach, and ombre rainbow.

These fabrics are available in Single Elite Bra kits, and are also suitable for swimsuits, dance costumes, panties, etc.

Indianapolis Workshop

The trip to Indianapolis had a very small amount of rain (not at all what we expected). Interesting things we learned on the way here: Buy gas in Missouri, the Missouri is a really big river, and semi's like to travel I-70.

Anne's lecture was attend by 35 ASG members and the second showing of Monica's Powerpoint presentation was a resounding success! There were many interesting questions but one that we just knew had to be answered her on the blog.

Saturday's workshop was grand fun. The weather did try to dampen our spirits (no sunshine) but we created our own "sunny" day. Everyone arrived bright-eyed and ready to sew. All were fit into their OWN bra by 6:00pm. The ladies discovered that a well fitting undergarment can be an uplifting and supportive experience.

Sunday's workshop was very successful and very productive. We were able to have everyone fitted and packed up by 6:30pm. Anne and I we very chatty and made it to St. Louis before we stopped for the evening.

Thank you Indianapolis we had a great time we look forward to hearing how your next bra making experience goes.

Gentlmen do exist

Ladies, we have a Gentleman among us. One of our customers, a handsome septuagenarian, likes to wear vests, and he has worked very hard to make a beautiful vest using Burda 8186. It was made out of moleskin, lined with PolySupreme. He did not stitch the lining and vest together at the hems, but left them loose adding ribbon tabs to the lining to keep it from riding up. What an amazing couture detail.

He has also put in working welt pocket. Such nice detailing. We just had to Ohh and Ahh when he was in.

We want to thank him for sharing this handsome garment with us, and allowing us to share it with all of you!

San Diego Workshop

Please excuse our lack of posting in the last couple of week. The Blog Goddesses have been sick and then there was the prep for the San Diego Workshop.

Friday night was a great lecture! Can you believe we had 62 women there? Lots of wonderful questions were asked and lots of flashing was done.

Monica debuted her PowerPoint presentation and it was GREAT. We are hoping that this makes our lecture more informative and easier to understand. Monica used the same pictures as in the book so that there would be continuity between the lecture, pattern instructions and the book.

The 3 workshops went Great! Everyone's bras fit beautifully and all brains were completley exhausted but full of new knowledge. The San Diego ASG Chapter are grand hostesses and are great ladies to sew with.

Anne flew back home without incident after a drive up the coast to LAX. Deb drove home after a too short visit to the Los Angeles area to visit old friends and do some family business. Not to mention a stop at Trader Joe's for some all important stocking up.

Anne just returned from Dallas, and came home with lots of new fabrics. She brought back over 50 new bolts. There are a very nice variety as you can see. Some of the new fabric types are as follows:

Cheaper than Therapy!

Thank you for participating in our first poll! It appears that 41% of us sew beacuse it is cheaper than therapy. Some 27% of us have more square feet of fabric than house (isn't this a scary thought -- but it makes for lower heating & electric bills due to the insulating properties).

Personally I think (this is Deb) that nothing says "I love you" like handmade undies! Just think about it for a minute . . . Only someone who really loves you would make you undies. And I only make undies for those I really love.

Lets carry this just a bit farther since this is Valentine's week how about making a pair of undies for your loved ones. If you are short of time just get the fabric, cut them out and make them up before Easter.

We had grand fun with lots of yummy goodies, cinnamon rolls, egg rolls, cookies, BLT spread with crackers! Yum Oh!

Dawn & her Darling Daughter (DD) came and made T-shirts. A good time was had by all!
