Web site and email issues this week

We want to apologize to all who have attempted to access our web site or email us since Tuesday, January 15th. The server which houses our information crashed, and we were left without either. In today's age of technology, we take advantage of what we have, and boy, do you feel helpless when it's not working!

Any email messages sent between Tuesday and Friday are lost. They have either gotten kicked back to the sender as undeliverable, or are lost in cyberspace somewhere. If you emailed us during those times, and have not received a reply, please resend the email to us. We will reply to them as quickly as possible.

The days are getting shorter, the nights getting colder (brrrr...) and its time for all us northerners to pack up our summer fun and get ready for winter. So here's some tips on

Winterizing your Pedal and/or Electric Boat

All models of the Encore:

Remove the keel plugs and drain all residual water. This will help prevent damage caused by freezing temperatures. It could be helpful to set the boat so gravity will aid in the draining.

If you've looked (read comment) and don't have keel plugs, please contact us at (888) 709-7097 or comment on this page, and we'll talk you through the proceedure for drilling the holes for the plugs.

Make sure to put the plugs back in, or tape them onto the boat somewhere (the steering handle has been suggested) to remind yourself they need to be put back in before launching.

Electric versions:

Charge the battery completely, remove it to a accessible location.

Don't let the battery drain completely during storage; you can use a trickle charger during this time to prevent this.

Escapade:

Pump bilge repeatedly to empty of residual water. Soak up excess.

News from Escapade owner Steve Hinds in Vermont

I finally manage to clear my schedule on the same day the sun shines so I can head for Lake Champlain. It’s the second time out this spring. Earlier this spring, I had to cut through a thin layer of ice inside the breakwater! Anybody else had experience using the Escapade as an ice breaker?

A couple of weeks ago, as I was launching the boat at Perkins Pier, Howard Kirby came over to introduce himself. He admired the boat and I offered to let him try it, but he was off to an appointment. So I called before coming out today and he met me at the waterfront with his wife. Here they are heading out for a spin.

It’s so early in the spring there’s only one boat moored inside the breakwater. In a month, the place will be packed.

As it was, I have time to get out to Juniper Island for lunch and a short nap. The water is still very cold, but the day is warm (65+ degrees) and the sun very clear. I anchor in the little cove on the south side of the island.

Hybrid Electric-Pedal Boat possibilities...

I came across a company in Vermont (WindstreamPower) who builds a pedal powered 12 volt electrical generator. With this device, you can generate about 80 watts of pedal power(according to Windstream); this is enough to potentially extend the range of our "Encore E" boat by 20-50% depending on boat speed and how hard you pedal! The Human Power Generator is not designed for boating(not water resistant), so do not take this as a direct endorsement as much as an interesting thought experiment into what is possible. That said, if the generator is properly guarded against getting drenched with water, then it may work on a boat. I hope to try one someday! Looks like fun. If you happen to try this on your boat or build such a thing, let us know how it works out! Also, just let us know here at Nauticraft if you would like us to offer an electrical generator hybrid power system on our boats someday!?
