2009 ushers in a new era in American politics with the inauguration of Barack Obama as 44th President of the United States. Examine some of the personalities and pathfinders who paved the way for this historic milestone with a new Spring 2009 class offering,
History 3731: History of African-American Mayors.
Join Dr. Fred Viehe as he examines the political careers of black political pioneers such as Cleveland's Carl Stokes, the first African-American mayor of a large city, Tom Bradley(Los Angeles), Harold Washington(Chicago), Andrew Young(Atlanta), Coleman Young(Detroit) and others. Examine the players in the political process starting with the Cleveland election in 1967 that has led to the White House 42 years later.
As part of your research, you are welcome to discover primary sources such as the Vindicator, New York Times, Newsweek, Time, Los Angeles Times, Amsterdam News, and many others in the Microform Center on Maag's third level near Jazzman's cafe. Remember, free paper or digitial copies can be made of microform materials. Ask at the microforms desk for assistance.

OhioLink Resources Not Available Saturday, November 29

OhioLINK’s Web site and many resources will be unavailable on Saturday, November 29, from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., while some planned maintenance is completed. OhioLINK’s Library Catalog, Electronic Journal Center, E-Book Center, Digital Media Center, Electronic Theses and Dissertations Center, OSearch databases (such as Inspec, MedLine, and PsycINFO), and the remote authentication server will all be unavailable during this time.

Although OhioLINK will be down, Maag's local library catalog, MaagNet, and resources available through Maag's specialized Off-Campus Access links will be accessible.

No Electronic Book Center on Thanksgiving

OhioLink will remove the Electronic Book Center from service on Thanksgiving day to resolve a problem.

The database should be available Friday, November 28; however, it will not be accessible the following day, Saturday, November 29, as part of a larger database maintenance project.

OhioLink has been experiencing problems with its remote authentication server on Thursday, November 20. Although they currently are working on the problem, at this time, it is not known when the off-campus authentication link will become accessible. Until the service is restored, those working off-campus will not be able to reach OhioLink databases via the regular link. Please try this workaround link until service is restored: http://authdb.ohiolink.edu

Databases accessed through Maag's proxy server are available.

All OhioLink databases and services are available from on-campus.

Jambar Newspaper Archive

For the last five months, the Archives Staff has been creating ocr'd pdf's of all the Jambar Newspapers (1931-present). The first stage of the project was to have all the Jambar Newspapers scanned and put in pdf files. The second stage had the archives staff take the images and apply optical character recognition to each issue: which allows for each issue to be completely searched. Once that was completed, the staff uploaded the images to Digital Maag for immediate viewing. The third and forth stages (yet to be finished) of the project will see the creation of TIFF images and meta-data, with an in depth abstract analysis, which will be added to each issue on Digital Maag. Stop in the Microform Center on Maag's third level to view bird's eye maps of Youngstown from 1870 and 1882. Examine how the city more than doubled in size as steel mills grew along the Mahoning River where the Chevrolet Center now stands. Artists in the late 19th century literally walked down the streets of American cities and sketched individual structures to create these fascinating portraits of imaginary aerial views.
Youngstown's 1870 map may be purchased for only $6.00 at the circulation desk on Maag's main level. Measuring 18 by 22 inches in size, it is suitable for framing and would make an unusual gift for a special someone.

Networked Library Services down 10/16/08

Networked Library Services will be severely limited on Thursday October 16, 2008 from 8:00 AM until approximately 5:00 PM. During this time we will be experiencing a server replacement and the transfer of data from our current server to the new server. The following services will be affected:

1. There will be restricted access to the on-line catalog for Maag Library. During some times of the day, it will be completely unavailable.

2. Circulation of Maag Library Materials will be a limited manual circulation. Any manual circulations will be updated to the electronic version when the system is back in operation.

The YSU Proxy server will not be able to complete proxy transactions so:

4. Access to library and OhioLINK databases from locations off-campus will not be available.

To the greatest extent possible, we urge all Maag Library users to make plans that avoid library electronic services during this time.

Fall 2008 RefWorks Training Sessions for Faculty and Graduate Students

RefWorks, the on-line bibliographic and citation software, is available to faculty and graduate students at Youngstown State University.

RefWorks assists the serious researcher in managing citation information in a centralized, web-based application. This management program permits the exportation of citation information from diverse databases and catalogs. RefWorks can use these centralized citations to create bibliographies and citations within documents in a wide variety of formats.

Maag Library is offering several training sessions during Fall 2008 for faculty and graduate students interested in learning more about RefWorks.
