From now on, the original uploaded source file will be removed after one week from the upload date. However, the encoded version will always be available for download.</blockquote><br />When I clicked on the Learn More link, it brought me to their blog and there, they explained in detail why they are limiting the usage of this feature to Vimeo Plus (paying) users:<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><blockquote> <span style="font-style: italic;">Since the very beginning, Vimeo has retained the original video files that you upload, and allowed you to grant people permission to download those files. We always take these original files and convert them so that they will play online and in the Vimeo player. We kept the original files for download because we wanted you to be able to save your video exactly the way it looked when it left your hard drive. This aspect of the service was not a huge burden on us when the site was younger, but we’ve had to take another look at what we are realistically capable of offering for years to come, while making sure the site stays on budget. Original file storage of every file for every user is a massive cost, and we have noticed that only a very small set of users actually ever download their own files. We want to keep original file storage around as a feature for people who use it, but we can’t continue to do it for everybody.</span></blockquote></div><br />I’m one of those users who finds original source file downloading very useful. As we all know, converted video files are very much different in terms of quality; source file downloading allows me and my readers/viewers to share raw, high-quality videos in a flash. It allows collaboration with other video bloggers much more manageable. And that’s what I liked about Vimeo - it’s video sharing and file storage rolled into one site.<br /><br />Vimeo’s reasons are pretty understandable. I know it was a hard decision. But something about their new policy bothered me:<br /><br /> <blockquote style="font-style: italic;">This new one-week policy applies to all basic accounts’ videos uploaded from this point onwards. For videos that were uploaded before this blog post, those original files will be available until August 1st, to give you some time to download them if you need to. After August 1st, those files will also be removed.</blockquote><br />It’s one thing that they are removing a pretty nifty feature from basic users but doing it retroactively just leaves a very bad taste to most. I suggest they just leave old source files in their system and start the new policy with newly-uploaded videos. At least the free-users’ panic mode will be reduced to a minimum.<br /><br />Well it’s not the end yet. The converted video file will still be available for download in mp4 format and Vimeo Plus users won’t be affected by the change. Now, I’m thinking - do I upgrade to Plus for $60 a year? Or do I just stick with the converted (less quality) files? I really don’t have patience (and the time) for other file hosting services.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">More Posts about Video Blogging on <a href="http://videochops.com/">VIDEO CHOPS</a></span><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/9075480985952254242-8115212522440320514?l=www.yougottech.com'/></div>CokskiBluehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590422617473790869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075480985952254242.post-39741591099184529032009-05-15T04:13:00.000-07:002009-05-15T04:27:31.375-07:00RIP to my Epson C90<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/Sg1Rcw7n7bI/AAAAAAAAWI0/buS8apluFBs/s1600-h/epson+c90.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/Sg1Rcw7n7bI/AAAAAAAAWI0/buS8apluFBs/s400/epson+c90.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336010688117075378" /></a><br />I hereby proclaim my almost 1-year old <a href="http://www.yougottech.com/2008/05/goodbye-hp-hello-epson.html">Epson C90</a> in a coma.<div><br /></div><div>And I know I gave up using HP a year ago, but I'm back to using HP. Google has provided the Android SDK so developers can build applications using APIs. The application is supposed to make it easier for us to browse the internet using our mobile phones.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Here's a few photos I took of a phone running on Android. I wonder when it's going to come to our country though.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/Sflqy5MwB0I/AAAAAAAAWFo/J9zRdBcMot8/s1600-h/android+1.jpg"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/Sflqy5MwB0I/AAAAAAAAWFo/J9zRdBcMot8/s400/android+1.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330409056549996354" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px; " /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SflqzDnZ1OI/AAAAAAAAWFw/DYRVXE8fUdc/s1600-h/android+2.jpg"><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SflqzDnZ1OI/AAAAAAAAWFw/DYRVXE8fUdc/s400/android+2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330409059346142434" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px; " /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SflqzN27CcI/AAAAAAAAWF4/slWFGgcRYOM/s1600-h/android+3.jpg"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SflqzN27CcI/AAAAAAAAWF4/slWFGgcRYOM/s400/android+3.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330409062095587778" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px; " /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SflqzaOF0aI/AAAAAAAAWGA/MAeihyraqPI/s1600-h/android+4.jpg"><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SflqzaOF0aI/AAAAAAAAWGA/MAeihyraqPI/s400/android+4.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330409065413988770" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px; " /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/9075480985952254242-1459627944237997948?l=www.yougottech.com'/></div>Aileen Apolonoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075480985952254242.post-7082903884937040682009-03-15T10:01:00.000-07:002009-03-15T10:01:00.783-07:00The Apps I UseWhen I brought home Daisy, I knew I had to install a couple of applications so that my computing experience would be seamless between any of the PCs I use.<div><br /></div><div>Here are a couple of must-haves on your PC (and all of them are FREE!):</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.free-av.com/">Avira Anti-Virus</a> - I've been using Avira for a couple of years now and I never had any problems with viruses. And what's great about Avira is it's free and there's an update every few days. </div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.openoffice.org/">Open Office</a> - I've been using Open Office for over a year now and there's really not much difference between using it and MS-Office. Most of my documents though are on Google Docs since I oftentimes change the PC I use. And it was a hard lesson learned when George (my old PC) crashed when I was out of town, good thing I always backed up my files.</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://desktop.google.com/">Google Desktop</a> - I love using Google Desktop because I just need to press Ctrl twice and I can easily search for a file in my desktop. I also use it for some RSS feeds, notes, a Picasa slideshow of my photos and it's where I anchor my Gtalk. </div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://picasa.google.com/">Picasa</a> - I use Picasa to keep my photos organized. I love the fact that you can have your name/URL stamped automatically on the photo when you upload it to your web album. My other favorite button is the "I'm feeling lucky" button which edits your photo automatically. And I also use the "Blog This" button and I'm currently learning how to edit videos using Picasa too. Plus you can also use Picasa to import photos from your phone!</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.google.com/talk/">Gtalk Gadget</a> - I use Gtalk 99% of the time now, so I just use the web version of YM. I like using the gadget because it's easy to send files and chat (by voice) with friends. Gtalk on Gmail is also quite exciting with the video messaging feature. </div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.apple.com/itunes/">iTunes</a> - Can't live without music. `nuff said.</div><div><br /></div><div>So those are my standard installations whenever I have a new PC/laptop. And it's all FREE!</div><div><br /></div><div>What about you? What do you install on your PC/laptop?</div><div><br /></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/9075480985952254242-708290388493704068?l=www.yougottech.com'/></div>Aileen Apolonoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075480985952254242.post-40992836692802535472009-03-09T06:30:00.000-07:002009-03-09T06:53:05.914-07:00MSI Wind<div style="text-align: left;">I've wanted to buy a small notebook since last year since <a href="http://aileenapolo.blogspot.com/2007/06/happy.html">Happy</a>'s growing old and heavy. Month after month my mind changed and eventually I limited my choices to: an Acer Aspire, a HP Mini or MSI Wind. My choice for an OS also swung, Linux vs. Microsoft Windows, but that was an easier battle to settle since I realized I had to make sure that if I had to a presentation my laptop should work on any type of LCD projector. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>So, why did I limit my choices to the three? Here's why:</div><div><br /></div><div>1. Acer Aspire - one of the best brands and during the third quarter last year they came out with their line of smaller notebooks. I also liked the fact that the notebooks are available in red, black and blue. (I liked the red one!).</div><div><br /></div><div>2. HP Mini - At some point during the decision making process I thought I wanted an HP Mini, because HP's a really good brand too and I remember getting excited back then because HP had one of the bigger harddisk sizes (most of the netbooks had very small HD's).</div><div><br /></div><div>3. MSI Wind - My tried and tested brand. I love my MSI S262 and I still use it often. In the 20 months that I've had it I never experienced any problems with it (even though I lug it around whenever I travel). So I naturally thought that getting a MSI Wind was a shoo-in.</div><div><br /></div><div>So come Saturday I thought I'd finally get a new laptop. My requirements were:</div><div>(1) should be light</div><div>(2) should run on Windows XP</div><div>(3) hard disk size should be more than 100GB</div><div>(4) memory should be at least 1GB DDR2</div><div>(5) should be less than 10" </div><div><br /></div><div>I realized that I didn't like how the HP Mini looked like. I don't have any issues with having smaller keys since I have small hands. I chose the MSI Wind because it had 2GB DDR2 memory compared to the Acer laptop.</div><div><br /></div><div>And meet Daisy, my new laptop -</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SbUe2BX65UI/AAAAAAAAV2c/XwtejEmF_p8/s1600-h/msi+wind.jpg"><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SbUe2BX65UI/AAAAAAAAV2c/XwtejEmF_p8/s400/msi+wind.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311185248983901506" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px; " /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>I got Daisy at The Hub, Parksquare. Life happens you know and sometimes you just get busy with other projects and sometimes yourself! Anyway, hopefully in the next few weeks I'd managed to post some of the videos I've taken for YouGotTech, especially the ones I've taken with our very own internet celebs!<div><br /></div><div>Last night my dear friend <a href="http://yolynne.wordpress.com/">Yolynne</a> tested with me this new instant messaging service, <a href="http://www.tokbox.com/">Tokbox.com</a>. No, I believe it's not <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">just</span> another IM service since it has these cool features (that actually work well!):</div><div><br /></div><div><ul><li>call service (voice/video)</li><li>video messaging</li><li>conference</li></ul><div>And you can actually use it to make video blogs and use it for video chatting in your website/blog! </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); "><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SYEjcy9Vf5I/AAAAAAAAVrI/6FJfAYhYJ38/s400/tokbox.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296553614386757522" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 297px; " /></span></div><div><br /></div><div>Tested the video service with Yolynne (she's in Zamboanga and I'm in Manila) and the video was very clear and wasn't lagging and the audio was quite clear. I haven't seen Yolynne in the flesh for about a year now and I was pretty pleased to see her. Oh and Yolynne mentioned that it works perfectly for Linux machines. And then I tested it with <a href="http://jaydj.blogspot.com/">Jay</a>, video (me)/audio (him). He was 25 kilometers away from me and we found the service to be pretty stable. I also tried out the video messaging service which I found to be quite easy to use.</div><div><br /></div><div>I did experience some difficulty navigating around (but maybe that's just me) and loading takes a bit of time. I had to wait a bit and click several times for the pop-up to finally close so I can answer back via chat with Jay. I'm not sure too if my video streams publicly since a link automatically appeared on my YM when I logged-in. I guess I'll just have to explore it better. But the platform looks promising and quite easy to use. </div><div><br /></div><div>You might also want to try out the <a href="http://mail.google.com/videochat">video chat on Gmail</a>. Tried it out with my friend based in Dubai and we were just simply quite happy to see each other via the net with stable and clear connection.</div></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/9075480985952254242-8445907072359286178?l=www.yougottech.com'/></div>Aileen Apolonoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075480985952254242.post-13303666779030460462008-12-27T03:44:00.000-08:002008-12-27T12:47:55.281-08:00Introduction to E-CommerceI often get asked to talk about e-commerce and show various example of its implementation locally. However, when I'm out of the country, an option I always give is a video talk and this is the latest one I made for Chiang Kai Shek. Unfortunately, something went wrong during the recording and end up being split into two parts.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">E-Commerce Talk Part 1</span><br /><embed src="http://static.ning.com/digitalfilipinocom/widgets/video/flvplayer/flvplayer.swf?v=3.10%3A12530" flashvars="config_url=http%3A%2F%2Fdigitalfilipinocom.ning.com%2Fvideo%2Fvideo%2FshowPlayerConfig%3Fid%3D2163659%253AVideo%253A9722%26x%3DgRXfWaG4qctVWhqcYP8eh4dxAwPZbnIk&amp;video_smoothing=on&amp;autoplay=off" scale="noscale" wmode="transparent" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" width="448" height="364"></embed> <br /><small><a href="http://digitalfilipinocom.ning.com/video/video">Find more videos like this on <em>DigitalFilipino.com Social Network</em></a></small><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">E-Commerce Talk Part 2</span><br /><embed src="http://static.ning.com/digitalfilipinocom/widgets/video/flvplayer/flvplayer.swf?v=3.10%3A12530" flashvars="config_url=http%3A%2F%2Fdigitalfilipinocom.ning.com%2Fvideo%2Fvideo%2FshowPlayerConfig%3Fid%3D2163659%253AVideo%253A9727%26x%3DgRXfWaG4qctVWhqcYP8eh4dxAwPZbnIk&amp;video_smoothing=on&amp;autoplay=off" scale="noscale" wmode="transparent" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" width="448" height="364"></embed> <br /><small><a href="http://digitalfilipinocom.ning.com/video/video">Find more videos like this on <em>DigitalFilipino.com Social Network</em></a></small><br /><br /><br />P.S. My apologies if I have been inactive. So much stuff happening now especially with the <a href="http://www.garyviray.com/">Busby SEO Test</a> competition that I just joined. Well I thought it's something I can blog about too here at You Got Tech (which has sadly been quite for over a month now, so sorry).<div><br /></div><div>Anyway, it was my brother who got me hooked in computers. I used to hang-out in his office in Dutch Boy and he'd let me play games using his computer. Eventually I became such a pest in the office he enrolled me in a logo programming summer class in Don Bosco. I was about 9 years old then and eventually he gave me his old XT PC when he got tired of it. </div><div><br /></div><div>I was in college when I first got exposed to the internet. This was even before Google was born. In school we were allowed to chat with our schoolmates online (provided you knew their ID number!). I also remember my professors back then talking about downloading files (about three hours at a time for a very small file!). Eventually I had dial-up at home and enjoyed doing online research and studied how to make websites on my own (my first one I think was hosted on Geocities and then Philonline) and did some sort of SEO to promote the sites I made. </div><div><br /></div><div>I got in the internet industry because I had interest in helping out exporters to promote their products online. My very first job in the industry was to be a product manager of an online exporters directory, that was 7 years ago and the rest is history.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div>So, how'd you get hooked to the internet?</div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/9075480985952254242-4277498218419641999?l=www.yougottech.com'/></div>Aileen Apolonoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075480985952254242.post-70282869752965922312008-11-07T21:43:00.000-08:002008-11-07T22:36:31.039-08:00Ep. 20: DevFest Manila<div style="text-align: left;">Almost two months ago Google announced DevFest Manila and the day finally came when developers from all over the country (as far as Zamboanga and Davao!) convered at the Bulwagang Tandang Sora, University of the Philippines (Diliman) for some serious dev talk on the following -<br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Open Socials</div><div>Maps API</div><div>App Engine</div><div>Youtube APIs</div><div><br /></div><div>It wasn't all nosebleed geek talk though, there were lots of fun stuff and here's a video blog about it -</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre; font-family:Arial;font-size:10px;"><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AJUEviELt4A&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AJUEviELt4A&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object></span><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>For more support materials about the event, please <a href="http://sites.google.com/site/apacdevfest/apac-devfest--manila--philippines">go here</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SRUzFsUC6JI/AAAAAAAAUI8/amLmEJVyNwY/s1600-h/yougottech+at+devfest.jpg"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SRUzFsUC6JI/AAAAAAAAUI8/amLmEJVyNwY/s400/yougottech+at+devfest.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266171512167262354" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px; " /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://batangyagit.com">Winston</a>, <a href="http://thisiscoy.net">Coy</a>, <a href="http://aileenapolo.blogspot.com">Aileen</a>, <a href="http://jaydj.blogspot.com">Jay</a> and <a href="http://www.alleba.com/blog">Andrew</a></span></span></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/9075480985952254242-7028286975296592231?l=www.yougottech.com'/></div>Aileen Apolonoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075480985952254242.post-26999618839142696102008-10-25T07:43:00.000-07:002008-10-25T08:05:59.740-07:00Ep. 19: Nokia Ovi by Gary Valenciano<div style="text-align: left;">I personally love sharing tons of content online (<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">di naman masyadong obvious diba?</span>). Back in October 2006, it was only $99 and it was given to me as an early birthday gift from my Aunt Phoebe and Uncle Phil in Florida. From then on, I've used a total of 5 different cameras in shooting my video blogs. Now let me show you how my videos evolved technically using these different tools - this is <em>CokskiBlue's Camera Evideolution</em>:<br /><br /><img src="http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i268/pepz_c/photo-pkdv59-1_02.jpg?t=1223640006" align="left" border="1" width="138" height="160" /><strong>Aiptek DV5900 (October 2006 - August 2007)</strong> This has got to be the cutest digital camera I've used. The cam has this small LCD display and with it folded in, the DV5900 would look like a little coin purse. Its minimum functions are bearable when you're just the casual <em>I-post-my-pictures-on-Friendster</em> type of guy but the weak flash and poor video quality will make you irk once you see the results. No wonder its present market prize is now down to $39.99.<br /><br />Despite the limitations, this camera witnessed the birth of CokskiBlue and I've used it for almost a year for many of my favorite episodes including this vlog on my very first bloggers meet-up:<br /><br /><center><script src="http://flash.revver.com/player/1.0/player.js?mediaId:496172;affiliateId:85327;backColor:#000000;frontColor:#ffffff;gradColor:#000000;width:480;height:392;" type="text/javascript"></script></center><br /><!--more--><br /><strong>Casio Exilim S770</strong> (<strong>December 2007 - July 2008) </strong><strong><img src="http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i268/pepz_c/casio-s770-lg.jpg" align="right" border="1" width="181" height="175" /></strong>After winning $100 at the Filipina Writing Project on my article <a href="http://thisiscoy.net/2007/11/24/the-funniest-filipina-vloggers/">The Funniest Filipina Vloggers</a>, I used the prize with some of my funds to get me my 2nd baby - a Casio Exilim. Illustrated by veteran web comic artist <a href="http://www.scottmccloud.com/">Scott Mccloud</a>, the book contains the many many cool features of Google's new web browser, Chrome. It was a breezy read thanks to Scott's systematic yet quirky storytelling. Scott says he conducted interviews with 20 Google engineers for this project and quickly added that the food at Mountain View is really as good as they say it is.<br /><br /><a href="http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u215/druesome/?action=view&current=11082008019-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u215/druesome/11082008019-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><br /><br />If you want to know more about Google Chrome and how it can drastically improve your Internet browsing, check out the <a href="http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/index.html">online version</a> of Scott's work. I'm keeping my copy in case it might be worth something 10 years from now. ;P<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/9075480985952254242-1629796751445267462?l=www.yougottech.com'/></div>Andrewnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075480985952254242.post-64905619193573202572008-10-03T05:58:00.000-07:002008-10-03T05:58:00.945-07:00Software Freedom DayThe Philippines celebrated Software Freedom Day in different parts of the country. In Manila there were two locations, one in Makati at the University of Makati and the other in Quezon City at the National Computer Center.<div><br /></div><div>So my dear "open-source mentor" (yeah the one who gave me the 30-day Ubuntu challenge) made me go to NCC (and that's a mean feat considering I live in Paranaque!). I still went though since I was curious as a non-techie on what was going on.</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family:arial;font-size:9px;"><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com.ph/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com.ph&amp;RGB=0x000000&amp;feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com.ph%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2Faileen.apolo%2Falbumid%2F5251052260737893105%3Fkind%3Dphoto%26alt%3Drss" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></span><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>In my own understanding "Software Freedom" means that you don't have to pay to use software, thereby using "open source" products for your computing needs. My 30-day Ubuntu challenge has actually resulted in that. I now use both Open Office and Google Docs for my documents. I've yet to get a hang of using Gimp, but I must say I absolutely love Picasa 3 for my photo editing needs and I'm currently studying how to edit movies using the same. </div><div><br /></div><div>I get asked a lot of times if one could survive with a Linux OS and I always say yes especially if you don't really need to install other applications that need more resources. One usually just makes documents and store pictures in their PC anyway and do other online chores (blogging, watching videos etc.) through websites that don't require you to install anything on your PC.</div><div><br /></div><div>Try it! And be free!</div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/9075480985952254242-6490561919357320257?l=www.yougottech.com'/></div>Aileen Apolonoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075480985952254242.post-52558808491593467672008-09-28T05:18:00.000-07:002008-09-28T05:37:14.179-07:00Philippine Blog AwardsLast week the Philippine blogosphere saw the recognition of noteworthy bloggers during the Philippine Blog Awards. Research revealed that Bayan wireless landline users saved up to 50% on cost.<br />2. They want to bring back real conversation.<br /><br />It was when I was still working for a telco when I first heard about "wireless landlines". It was then an option for users who could not be reached by cabled phones. It was pretty tricky though since engineers had to install antennas on the roof of the house and service was quite flaky, depending on the weather. But one thing crossed my mind back then - can't they just make wireless landlines so we don't have to spend so much on mobile phone bills?<br /><br />Fast forward. When Bayan launched their wireless landline (was it last year?) I thought, "Oh! This is it!" Originally the available units was this huge <span style="font-style: italic;">telephone</span> (see photo). I've witnessed someone on the MRT using it though and it was placed in a huge sports bag. I wanted to take a photo but got scared that she might get mad. My Mom's <span style="font-style: italic;">amigas</span> would also bring around their units (even during Garden Club meet-ups!). I know that our homeowners also got units for the guards in our village gates and this makes it easy to get in touch with them to call for cabs/tricycles and for help.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SNRg1aINoVI/AAAAAAAAOm8/nYWTDnvVxJo/s1600-h/bayanWireless+landline.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SNRg1aINoVI/AAAAAAAAOm8/nYWTDnvVxJo/s200/bayanWireless+landline.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247925936456573266" border="0" /></a>Eventually Bayan introduced the cellphone-like units and one of the things I did was to collect flyers to compare prices. It ain't bad and the signal in our place is actually pretty good. I personally use my mobile phones like it's a landline and I prefer voice calls versus SMS-ing and I still burn the phone lines in the evenings to make <span style="font-style: italic;">telebabad</span>.<br /><br />Methinks that having a wireless landline is good both for the user and the caller. The user's cost for phone bills is lessened and callers save a lot too since they don't have to have to pay for expensive mobile phone bills.<br /><br />Well maybe I'd eventually get a unit. Would you?<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/9075480985952254242-3055920040434321148?l=www.yougottech.com'/></div>Aileen Apolonoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075480985952254242.post-27407456091911686232008-09-17T01:34:00.000-07:002008-09-17T02:20:25.628-07:00Google News in the Philippines<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SNDLrtVdMNI/AAAAAAAAOl0/9IX6tQUt2tM/s1600-h/Google+News+1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xsE4oKSA13s/SNDLrtVdMNI/AAAAAAAAOl0/9IX6tQUt2tM/s400/Google+News+1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246917517651030226" border="0" /></a><br />If my Dad has his own laptop I'm sure he'll be surfing for news, news and news! I am happy to share that the Philippines is the first country to have it localized in South East Asia! Hooray!<br /><br />Well here's what Rahul Roy-Chowdhury, Product Manager for Google News, said:<br /><br /><blockquote>"Google News is great for both users and publishers in the Philippines. Our mission is to help Filipino users find the stories they're looking for as quickly as possible. Google News lets users easily check the most recent headlines from publishers around the world and then read those stories on the publisher's site. By making it easier for users to search news stories we help more people find more of the content created by Filipino publishers. Stories from publishers that readers already know and love, as well as stories from sources they may never have known existed. Readers get more stories -- and publishers get more readers on their site."<br /></blockquote><br />What are you waiting for? We are THE tech blog for non-techies! Woohoo!<div><br /></div><div>One of the things I've been looking into lately are the hi-tech phones. But we did our best, as this team photo with six of us present:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ICKG1OuHmls/SKG_xoEvfZI/AAAAAAAAAM8/ge4Lp6payHA/s1600-h/080811-2125-8430.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ICKG1OuHmls/SKG_xoEvfZI/AAAAAAAAAM8/ge4Lp6payHA/s400/080811-2125-8430.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233675101273030034" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Being one of the not-so-rookie blogggers among the crowd, it was nice to see a good mix of both newbies and oldies launching new projects that prove to be relevant and influential for today's blog readers.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ICKG1OuHmls/SKG_wG-GtKI/AAAAAAAAAMk/8ImIYK03L8M/s1600-h/080811-2104-8402.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ICKG1OuHmls/SKG_wG-GtKI/AAAAAAAAAMk/8ImIYK03L8M/s400/080811-2104-8402.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233675075206952098" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ICKG1OuHmls/SKG_wN1HuJI/AAAAAAAAAMs/KgQ_vK_eMic/s1600-h/080811-2105-8411.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ICKG1OuHmls/SKG_wN1HuJI/AAAAAAAAAMs/KgQ_vK_eMic/s400/080811-2105-8411.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233675077048318098" border="0" /></a><br /><br />With blogs now recognized as a vital tool in cascading information to almost everyone, it is now the time to use our influence to spawn learning and positive growth, like how You Got Tech strives to be the tech resource for the non-techie.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ICKG1OuHmls/SKG_wNYLfsI/AAAAAAAAAM0/5npejGg1m5k/s1600-h/080811-2122-8421.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ICKG1OuHmls/SKG_wNYLfsI/AAAAAAAAAM0/5npejGg1m5k/s400/080811-2122-8421.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233675076926930626" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Now you might be wondering what I'm doing writing for this wonderful blog. I'm markku of <a href="http://rebelpixel.com/">rebelpixel.com</a> and you've probably seen me in one of our recent blogger events, or you might have come across my (semi-static) blog in the past. Technically, I've always been a part of the YGT team though this is my first post, and this is not even a tech-related entry for the non-techie. In the coming weeks though, you should be hearing more from me with information just for you! You Got Tech was recognized as one of the Top Ten Emerging Influential Blogs of 2008. Woohoo!!!<br /><br />I would also like to thank all the other contributors of You Got Tech for the time and effort they give to make posts for our non-techie readers. It is with great pleasure that we would continue to share information about techie stuff and hope that we would help educate more people (and make them internet addicts) in our own little way. Woot! Woot!!!<br /><br />Here's a snippet of the recognition ceremonies of the Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs of 2008 held at Legend Villas Hotel (ceremonies sponsored by <a href="http://legendhotels.com.ph/">Legend Hotels International</a>, Slycesoft Games Development and <a href="http://www.yespayments.com">YesPayments.com</a>).<br /><br /><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/t52_8RLvwTA&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/t52_8RLvwTA&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><br /><br />The 2008 Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs<br /><ol><li><a href="http://manilafoodistas.blogspot.com/">Manila Foodistas</a></li><li><a href="http://www.filipinovoices.com/">Filipino Voices</a></li><li><a href="http://visitsagada.com/">Visit Sagada</a></li><li><a href="http://missingcarlo.filblogs.com/">Missing Carlo</a></li><li><a href="http://marroxas2010.blogspot.com/">Mar Roxas for President in 2010 blog<br /></a></li><li><a href="http://www.yougottech.com/">You Got Tech</a></li><li><a href="http://delfindjmontano.blogspot.com/">The Not so Talented DJ Montano</a></li><li><a href="http://www.davaodeli.com/">Davao Delicious</a><br /><a href="http://blog.edarevalo.net/">Music Picks</a></li><li><a href="http://www.gensantos.com/">Bariles Republic</a><br /><a href="http://fritzified.com/">Fritzified</a></li><li><a href="http://sinosila.blogspot.com/">Bloggers Da Who</a></li></ol><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/9075480985952254242-309079516161113911?l=www.yougottech.com'/></div>Aileen Apolonoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075480985952254242.post-88705344055125862742008-08-02T09:21:00.000-07:002008-08-02T09:51:39.926-07:00My Ubuntu Diary, the 30-Day Challenge BeginsI've always wanted to learn more about open source. I had my briefing a few months ago from the team that handles "those stuff" from where I work. I was quite ashamed to ask questions since I really have little knowledge about it, much less know anything about the tech-side of it, but ya-know, you'll never learn anything unless you ask.<br /><br />When George (my trusty ol' desktop PC) died on me a few months ago I had to hunker up and get something working for <a href="http://miguelapolo.blogspot.com">Miguel</a> so he can go online. I had T-rex (a 9-year old PC) in comatose in his room. The PC was left neglected and unused, but I knew it was working. With some help from <a href="http://jaydj.blogspot.com">JayDJ</a> we got it working and running on Ubuntu (actually he did 99.5% of the job and my 0.5% contribution was getting him water <span style="font-style: italic;">haha</span>).<br /><br />I'm not shy to ask for help whenever I need it and because of that I had the privilege of meeting some of the Ubuntu legends in our country. Let's not reveal who they are first, lest I fail in this attempt of mine to educate myself on using open source tools. But the rumored Ubuntu godfather in the Philippines was the one who issued me this challenge.<br /><br />I know I'm behind schedule with this 30-day challenge issued to me. I'm actually 9-days behind schedule and it's a good thing that T-rex' harddisk died on us. I got a little help from JayDJ to replace the HD with his extra 30-GB HD, but now I'm on my own to get the system up and running.<br /><br />And this is where the 30-day Ubuntu challenge begins.<br /><br />Day 1: 10:00 p.m.<br /><br />JayDJ replaced T-rex' HD. Mind you T-Rex is a very old PC (I have to confirm the specs with JayDJ <span style="font-style: italic;">heh</span>) and it's quite slow. The Ubuntu version that I have is Ubuntu 7.10 which we downloaded when it was first installed on T-rex. Burned it on a CD. I heard that this version is much more stable than the new one, plus my PC is OLD that's why I'll be using this still.<br /><br />Anyway, I successfully managed to <span style="font-style: italic;">start</span> installation, but it kept failing. Apparently we had to fix some stuff in the CMOS because of the HD. I had JayDJ fix it up and proceeded with installation, BUT it kept hanging and it's almost 1 a.m. already, so I think I give myself an F for e<span style="font-weight: bold;">F</span>fort for today. I have 2 PCs to work on anyway. <span style="font-style: italic;">Heh.</span><br /><br />Will try again tomorrow! Gah!<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/9075480985952254242-8870534405512586274?l=www.yougottech.com'/></div>Aileen Apolonoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9075480985952254242.post-58017452752876864352008-07-30T00:18:00.000-07:002008-08-27T23:53:06.992-07:00Antonio Bucu talks about his latest camera<div style="text-align: center;"><object width="320" height="266" class="BLOG_video_class" id="BLOG_video-e4e05ae8c52b3269" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="movie" value="http://www.blogger.com/img/videoplayer.swf?videoUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fvp.video.google.com%2Fvideodownload%3Fversion%3D0%26secureurl%3DqAAAAEbqiT-pXmimn7VDny7-dKrPie-1hqxw38YqrTPdEoXFnajiKWevSpvZj9dsB7et3oV8Cu4Xwhq2_aGjn0k-zMIF_TcJuGGBk9SsgefQHrbKyL1BCH2XWjdf5XPHZRU0bfmR6PGs8royYTBagNWD6GM67fI0_101VtNEaGGRrAfJ3RrSbKUo1hGOqLNQ6-culrr9CVwtkuAxvxgq66knPciO6hKFxZoqyvU38EbzoGyS%26sigh%3DGOwwdXqToHUcr04rAU2AMKGDt0E%26begin%3D0%26len%3D86400000%26docid%3D0&amp;nogvlm=1&amp;thumbnailUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fvideo.google.com%2FThumbnailServer2%3Fapp%3Dblogger%26contentid%3De4e05ae8c52b3269%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw320%26sigh%3DwQYVvt0Pi0tUTII4hOMdCSgObC0&amp;messagesUrl=video.google.com%2FFlashUiStrings.xlb%3Fframe%3Dflashstrings%26hl%3Den"><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF"><embed width="320" height="266" src="http://www.blogger.com/img/videoplayer.swf?videoUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fvp.video.google.com%2Fvideodownload%3Fversion%3D0%26secureurl%3DqAAAAEbqiT-pXmimn7VDny7-dKrPie-1hqxw38YqrTPdEoXFnajiKWevSpvZj9dsB7et3oV8Cu4Xwhq2_aGjn0k-zMIF_TcJuGGBk9SsgefQHrbKyL1BCH2XWjdf5XPHZRU0bfmR6PGs8royYTBagNWD6GM67fI0_101VtNEaGGRrAfJ3RrSbKUo1hGOqLNQ6-culrr9CVwtkuAxvxgq66knPciO6hKFxZoqyvU38EbzoGyS%26sigh%3DGOwwdXqToHUcr04rAU2AMKGDt0E%26begin%3D0%26len%3D86400000%26docid%3D0&amp;nogvlm=1&amp;thumbnailUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fvideo.google.com%2FThumbnailServer2%3Fapp%3Dblogger%26contentid%3De4e05ae8c52b3269%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw320%26sigh%3DwQYVvt0Pi0tUTII4hOMdCSgObC0&amp;messagesUrl=video.google.com%2FFlashUiStrings.xlb%3Fframe%3Dflashstrings%26hl%3Den" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed></object><br /></div><br />Graphic designer and music artist <a href="http://amp.channelv.com/X">Antonio Bucu</a> shows off his newest camera - Canon a590IS.
