As the 1990s helped everyone get a greener consciousness, business practices have moved towards a more sustainable operation model, realizing that taking care of the environment goes hand in hand with helping the bottom line.

The Airport Authority is no late-comer to this trend. In fact, I think we’re pretty pioneering in terms of extending the concept of sustainability to encompass more than just being green.

In February of this year, the Airport Authority Board adopted a Sustainability Policy based on a concept called EONS -— a recognition that what we do as an organization impacts many generations to come. Developed by a working group of the Airports Council International - North America (ACI-NA), EONS is an acronym (and businesses love those!). Each letter signifies one of the four elements of sustainability as it relates to airports and the aviation industry:

· Economic Viability

· Operational Excellence

· Natural Resource Conservation and Preservation

· Social Responsibility

I think EONS is yet another component of what makes us such a dynamic organization. It helps us all look in broader terms about what it really means to be sustainable.

Look for more posts from me on this topic, since it’s a subject near and dear to my own interests as a professional community planner for the Airport Authority!Goodwill Ambassabloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261050509584752963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9031435058744813462.post-41428011617952950962008-07-16T16:14:00.000-07:002008-07-16T17:11:33.331-07:00Where are we going? The endeavor is a multi-agency initiative to plan the long-term future of the airport.

The cornerstone of the project is the daily collaboration we at the airport are having with our regional partners (namely the City of San Diego and SANDAG). San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders is Chairman of the Ad Hoc Airport Regional Policy Committee, which is guiding the project to the February, 2009, finish line.

Other regional partners represented on this important committee are the Port of San Diego, the County of San Diego, the Metropolitan Transit System, the North County Transit District and the U.S. Department of Defense. The Ad Hoc Airport Regional Policy Committee meets every three weeks on Thursdays starting at 7:15 a.m. at the Airport Authority Board Room in the Commuter Terminal. In fact, they're meeting tomorrow!
Also supporting Destination Lindbergh is a Technical Committee and a special subcommittee of the Airport Advisory Committee, which both provide valuable input to staff and the consultant team at every step of the project.

A new Destination Lindbergh website has agendas, meeting notes and presentations for each of the meetings, as well as other information about Destination Lindbergh.

<u1:p></u1:p>In planning the long-term future of the airport, the goals Destination Lindbergh are to:
<u1:p style="font-family: georgia;"></u1:p>

<u1:p></u1:p>Analyze and consider economic and environmental sustainability
<u1:p></u1:p>
Optimize operational efficiency
<u1:p></u1:p>
Integrate multiple modes of transportation
<u1:p></u1:p>
Evaluate the entire airport, as well as adjacent properties

<u1:p style="font-family: georgia;"></u1:p>
<u1:p></u1:p>In the Airport Planning Department, one of the things we’re currently working on to support Destination Lindbergh is an updated passenger forecast for the airport. And in some ways, Texas is alive and well at SDIA!

The Airport Authority’s own President/CEO, Thella F. Bowens, claims Texas as her origin, and several other Texans fill out our staff ranks. With great fanfare, the Airport Authority’s annual employee appreciation event is characterized by a Texas barbecue theme.

So what is it about Texas?

Texas is unique among the Union in having been an independent nation for a decade before it joined the U.S. – and that was an inspiration for California, too. Have you ever wondered why California’s Bear Flag contains a single red star (as shown on this Southwest Airlines plane)? It’s a tribute to Texas from Californians who likewise rebelled against rule by Mexico.

So the Airport Authority toasts that Texas spirit of independence and liberty -- something that might be regarded as inspiration to take flight! The largest airline at SDIA (handling more than a third of all our passengers) is none other than Texas-based Southwest Airlines, which loves to tout the “freedom to fly”.

So from many angles, the Texas spirit is alive and well at the Airport Authority!Goodwill Ambassabloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261050509584752963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9031435058744813462.post-1944539129426137502008-07-10T08:47:00.000-07:002008-07-10T09:43:52.530-07:00Ambassa-Shot # 2 revealedTwo alert Ambassablog readers, both of them Airport Authority employees, have correctly identified Ambassa-Shot #2, pictured here. Naty in Planning & Operations and Liz in Accounting revealed it is none other than Guillermo, an enormous freestanding sculpture of gleaming stainless steel by sculptor Steve Bartlett of San Francisco. Some refer to Guillermo by his nickname, Running Man, since he communicates a sense of urgent motion - perhaps a passenger hurriedly rushing through the airport to catch a flight. You will see Guillermo at the east end of Terminal 1, to the right as you approach the terminal. He is one of many unique works of public art at San Diego International Airport. Ambassa-Shot #3 is up now, at the bottom of the Ambassablog, along with a running archive of all Ambassa-Shots.
Goodwill Ambassabloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261050509584752963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9031435058744813462.post-12115375277181792412008-07-08T09:24:00.000-07:002008-07-09T09:32:56.601-07:00Who let these characters in the airport?

This fun video has been produced by San Diego International Airport to run at all terminal security checkpoints. In the Quieter Home Program at San Diego International Airport, we are guaranteed to be surprised, entertained and educated on a daily basis. We have the pleasure of working with people in the communities surrounding San Diego International Airport. The other day, a lady stopped in our office to sign her Avigation Easement and was telling us stories of when she was a “Rosie the Riveter” working on aircraft here in San Diego during World War II.

We hear stories from people who are retired from the Navy, with the most amazing memorabilia from their travels. We hear about so many aspects of people’s lives.

We also experience some challenging times, too, especially when homeowners’ expectations aren’t in line with the reality of what the Quieter Home Program offers. But that came to an end today in resounding fashion, as San Diego International Airport welcomed this Zoom Airlines Boeing 767-300ER (above) with a special salute. The flight marked the resumption of twice-weekly service between San Diego and London (You might remember that British Airways used to fly this route nonstop.)

The Zoom service, along with each new international flight at SDIA, brings obvious convenience to business and leisure travelers, as well as big benefits to the region's tourism and other industries. Our thanks to Aaron in Facilities Development for snapping the awesome shots of the Zoom airplane.

[Home Treat Alert! The multimedia feature above may not be accessible at work. This section will feature spectacular photographs of life at San Diego International Airport sent in by airport employees and other Ambassablog readers.

We were inspired to start this new component of the Ambassablog by Joan-Marie, a member of the public whose home happens to command a bird's-eye view of Lindbergh Field. A self-described fan of the airport and of the Goodwill Ambassablog, she sent us an e-mail a few days back with some shots she took of the airport from her home, like the one above. She asked if we might feature them in the blog. They were such beautiful shots, we couldn't resist!

The Ambassa-Shots section will be updated intermittently with other shots sent in by our readers. Joan-Marie, thanks for motivating us to start a great new tradition at the Goodwill Ambassablog.Goodwill Ambassabloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261050509584752963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9031435058744813462.post-17074946283684709002008-06-06T10:35:00.000-07:002008-06-06T10:43:37.757-07:00Making waves in employee communicationsThe Airport Authority's Goodwill Ambassador Program and Goodwill Ambassablog are making waves in the world of public agency employee communications. They were so motivated by the story of the Ambassablog that they began devising plans to launch an employee blog of their own ... and they already have a name for it: the Bonne-Blog! We look forward to the day when the Bonne-Blog enters the blogosphere.

Employee blogging is still a new endeavor in the world of employee communications for many organizations. It's a great resource to keep abreast of major transportation issues across the nation and across many industries.

Airport Check-In, on the other hand, is all about airports. It just kicked off this month, and we look forward to more great posts like the first one about how airports have become the new "town halls" of the 21st Century. We're thrilled that Airport Check-In chose to list the Goodwill Ambassablog as one of its first examples of airport employee blogs.

These blogs and several others related to aviation are conveniently listed in the "Brother Blogs" and "Other Aviaton-Related Blogs" sections over in the right-hand sidebar of the Goodwill Ambassablog. "Brother Blogs" are ones most similar to the Ambassablog, in that they are blogs by rank-and-file employees. These include employee blogs at other airports, airlines and the Transportation Security Administration. They feature continually updated live feeds showing their most recent postings.

The blogs listed in the right-hand sidebar can be a convenient way to stay informed about what's going on in our industry and gain a deeper understanding of what employees at other agencies and companies are doing and thinking.

So it seems that transportation blogs have been cleared for takeoff ... and are already flying high!Goodwill Ambassabloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261050509584752963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9031435058744813462.post-65205312457791440622008-05-28T11:26:00.000-07:002008-05-28T12:16:39.079-07:00Benchmarking Portland International Airport

In Airport Planning, we commonly compare San Diego International Airport to other airports to see how we are doing. Airport Planning typically looks at the following airports for benchmarking purposes:

Portland (PDX)

Tampa (TPA)

Oakland (OAK)

San Jose (SJC)

Cleveland (CLE)

Benchmark airports are selected for a variety of similarities and/or instructional differences between them and our airport, such as: markets served, number of passengers, number of operations, leisure/business passenger split and geography. You can probably think of both similarities and differences between SAN and each airport above.

I recently attended a meeting with the Port of Portland (which operates Portland International Airport, or PDX, in Portland, Oregon) in support of the Destination Lindbergh project (look for more on this topic in an upcoming post.) Aside from taking all the photos you see above, I was also able to take a behind-the-scenes tour and gather some good information. Look at the comparison between PDX and SAN:

Portland International Airport (PDX)

14.6 million - passengers in 2007

265,000 - operations in 2007

3 - runways (longest is 11,000 feet)

37 - gates

55 - nonstop destinations

largest airline - Alaska/Horizon

San Diego International Airport (SAN)

18.3 million - passengers in 2007

227,000 - operations in 2007

1 - runway (9,400 feet)

41 - gates

55 - nonstop destinations

largest airline - Southwest

I want to extend a big thank-you to my host for the day, Jason at PDX. He walked me through the entire airport and showed off some of the unique things that PDX is doing, like:

solar panels on the roof of their parking structure

construction of a second parking structure and new Port of Portland offices

TriMet MAX light rail line that goes directly to the terminal

attracting a second daily flight to Europe

local brand-name concessions

being named TSA’s Western Area Airport of the Year

and, perhaps most impressive, their commitment to sustainability

You can find out more about PDX’s long-term planning efforts on their PDX<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5205503486232632498" style="FLOAT: right; I also rode from Lemon Grove, but unlike Scott, this was my first attempt. The ride into work took one hour, five minutes and was pleasant in the cool morning air. The ride back home was not so pleasant. The climb back up to Lemon Grove's elevation in 85-degree heat made the ride quite challenging, although it only took 10 minutes longer. I arrived home fully spent, but I made it! I am planning on doing this more often!" -- Gary (Facilities Development Department)
<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202579909661091586" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display:
